เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 13 ธ.ค. 2021
Fascinated with the natural world since second grade, I started teaching biology in 1990, while in college, in Bucharest Romania; as private tutor and a high school teacher. 1994-1999 at the University of Cincinnati as a graduate student/teaching assistant, teaching biology & botany courses. I became a botanist, appreciating plants as they often define the ecosystem: forest, savanna, prairie, offering a rich biodiversity making our world a better place; as well as part of a balanced mostly plant-based nutrition.
Starting 1999 I was a sabbatical replacement visiting biology & botany professor in Spokane WA, Monmouth IL, and a tenure-track & tenured professor in Springfield Missouri at Drury University, since 2001. I also, tremendously enjoyed teaching summer field botany courses at Au Sable & Pacific Rim Institute.
Botany in college is becoming a thing of the past, and I am thrilled to share my excitement for plants with anyone who is interested.

‘Usturoiul’ de frunze este o specie cultivată mai ales pentru frunzele cu gust de usturoi
มุมมอง 1253 หลายเดือนก่อน
Allium tuberosum, ‘usturoi’ de frunze, este foarte ușor de cultivat direct din semințe sau răsad. Din păcate, are tendințe invazive! Frunzele cu un gust relativ delicat de usturoi sunt consumate crude sau gătite. Vara târziu către toamnă această specie perenă produce numeroase flori parfumate care adaugă o sursă de hrană pentru polenizatori.

Is there a variety you can name that is particularly tasty? The males are used as shade trees around here and their pollen in the spring drives me crazy! But I would love to plant a non-staining female mulberry in my yard, where it would be near to a cement driveway and walkway.
Why you excluded former Yugoslavia on your morus alba map? It is actually predominant type of mulberry in former Yugoslavia...I grow up playing with my friends under Morus alba mulberry tree that was probably 200 years old...
so sorry for the omission, I used the map provided by Plants of the World Online powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:30051955-2 which probably relies on the reports from the individual countries; considering the proximity it is definitely more present in numerous other regions. THANK YOU for your comment, very important information
Hello I’m Horia
Salut Horia, glad you found this :)
@ yes, I found you
One of my faves!!! Such a great informative and well proxy video. Thank you for sharing. 👏❤
thank you @LostInThisGardenofLife love your name 😀
Thank you, Ioana Popescu, for this informative visit to the White Garden. Thank you, Ellen, for leading the walk through the garden.
Excellent suggestion.

Looks tasty
I remember the day we toured this wonderful Botanical garden together ❤❤
Dinaaa... great times 😘 looking forward to our next tour together to this and more botanical gardens 🤗❤
thank you for the plant spotlight. Your presentation was perfect with no unnecessary youtube fanfare. I really appreciate your format.
Dear Fugueine, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you finding and watching this video and taking the time to let me know. You made my day 🙏❤
Pokeweed is one of my favorite natives. Anyone annoyed at her persistence should appreciate her role as a first healer of disturbed land. Way to go!
Thank you for leaving this comment. It's really good to know that pokeweed is a pioneer species.
excellent point, Jeremiah thank you so much for sharing glad to know that pokeweed is also appreciated it as native not only as an exotic in far away botanical gardens... what is common is less appreciated
Thank you for this informative video. I am currently growing chijimisai indoors hydroponically in my LetPot SE system. The seeds germinated in 2 days. So far, so good.
Sadly had to cut .took over growing on a wall already 7 ft off ground so couldn't prune to control them.
like all living organisms, plants will take over... when the conditions are good for their growth, and indeed occasionally their uncontrollable growth will interfere with our interests on the land
They grow out of control.
So much good info thanks so much.
indeed, it easily re-seeds itself I am now trimming their fruiting heads soon after blooming is done
salut Horia 😊
Salut Ioana!
Very invasive. Shows up everywhere in the garden.
I absolutely love black walnut. I also learned to throw and hit a baseball by playing with these as a young child.
I hope there was also a delicious nutty treat at the end of the batting session :)
Sa sparg greu😮😢
Thank you for making this video! When I was little I grew up around a path lined with mulberries, of which I'm sure one was at least Morus rubrus, but I was never sure if the other tree was a white mulberry, or if their red berries fell off while still white. I love mulberry trees so much.
a pleasure to hear, THANK YOU for watching, and sharing the joy of delicious fruit indeed the color of the fruit is not the best indicator for species identification probably the more important part: ripe fruit to be safe and delicious
What’s up with your voice?
maybe my accent? or maybe as this video was with a lapel microphone due to traffic nearby
I just learned about Mulberry Trees a couple years ago -- I now have a few growing on my Property and it like to Clone them also and Pot them to sell or give to interested people. 1st one I planted was a Pakistan Mulberry and for being just a couple years old its already grown past 10 feet, but i do trim it when it gets too tall.... Thanks for the nice video...
for trees, one way to cloning is grafting THANK YOU for watching
I miss you both. You still look the same 🤍🤍🌿
great to hear you Dina 🤗 THANK YOU ❤
Thanks for the information. I love pecans ❤
Love this video ❤❤
I love plants and I love your way of clarifying things 🤍🌿🌱🌳💚

Yes my mum has one too .I thinks it's ornamental plum. Prunus blireana.
Hi
Hello GreenGages, THANK YOU for watching
I started a UK government petition to have these plants banned from sale. Please search the government petition website to find it and sign it.
I've used black locust wood for years. I'm in northern NY state and it's quite well established here. Being a barn repair contractor working on a state funded barn repair program we were required to use black locust or white oak for all " wet" apps such as sills etc. It was not available anywhere. So I sourced my own logs and made my own. One thing led to another and now it's a part of my business. During our local recession in the 2012 time no work was available and we cut hundreds of locust poles and posts for the new hop industry that was sweeping the state. I grow and sell root cuttings and will be producing end grain flooring blocks this year. Round and square profiles as I have thousands of feet of seasoned post scraps and small logs for milling. It amazes me how under utilized this wood is. It grows like a weed , higher caloric count than soft coal and fixes nitrogen. Everyone in europe is growing it. We pay farmers to grow corn and beans so we can have cheap twinkes.
THANK YOU Timothy for your great addition to knowledge on this species, that you are correct should be better utilized, and yet it is better known in Europe (being invasive and more visible... might have something to do with it) than in its home continent. More testimonials like yours and entrepreneurial endeavors will help.
@@ioanatalkplants You are quite welcome. I'm going to try to add some new content on my channel and locust will be one. I haven't posted in like three years and I've done some interesting things, lol. I did film some but I hate, editing.
@@ioanatalkplants It may be known as an invasvive but I'm talking about being planted on an industrial scale for many uses.
I know how it goes, Tim... time is of the essence... glad to give you an incentive... to add more on honey locust knowledge & uses
Smh helping thieves
a pioneer species that lives fast and dies young
What? Never heard that before. Not the pioneer part or lives fast. The latter is partly true. Starts fast, spreads fast, reproduces reasonably fast. I know where there is a mother tree that is probably responsable for a million or more offspring in a county wide area! This tree is 3-4 feet in diameter and at least a hundred years old.
Non scripta is native to the British Isles, so it's the British bluebell, not "English"
very appreciated Dan, excellent point, sorry for using the two interchangeably, when I agree they are not.
bun ❤
Delicious 😋
There is plenty in east Africa too.

Thank you very much for your video. What kind of frost can withstand?
THANK YOU for watching :) its natural range goes up to southern Canada to growing zones 5 and some varieties (from northern stock) even colder. When planted near a house / building it gets the benefit of residual heat from the building.
@@ioanatalkplants Thank you, I am very glad, I bought it for my garden.
Ceylon or fake cinanom?
Cinnamomum cassia, Cinnamomum verum, and other species in the Cinnamomum genus; at least three species of high commercial importance. Apparently many areas of North America got used mostly with Cassia and not so much with Ceylon, mostly due to prices and availability. Even though different species, each having slightly different nuances and chemicals, several (not just these two most common ones) species of Cinnamomum share similar general health benefits, including: antimicrobial, potentially lowering blood sugar levels, and more.

Wow
Lovely plants!
I have tried to plant bulbs in my garden, unfortunately they did not take. Over 80 bulbs and had them for one spring and nothing the next spring. We have them across the road at a state park and they thrive. I wonder if my yard doesn’t have enough sunshine. North west facing.
hopefully the bulbs are still there taking their time to bloom, they do take ~ 7 years to bloom when started from seed, and some small bulbs might need a couple of years to accumulate enough energy to bloom. They are mostly a prairie plant, but they are found at the forest edge, hopefully they get some afternoon sun. Good luck and keep encouraging native species.
Wow, awesome pictures! 👍 My support. 😊
