Weren't they trying to overcompensate for a past they can't change? Only in answer to a question he refers to the fact that important non-American films are overlooked at the Oscars and that the Acadmy Awards are "artistically" not divers enough. That’s a different thing. But you can't really be sure, what he's talking about since he rambles on as someone with a terrible hangover does. He certainly looks like he's having one.

It has probably outlived itself sadly. Delpy put her foot in her mouth stating in an interview she wished she was black because itd be easier than being an A-list white actor. She brought so much to these Before roles, but after all said and done, I think shes always been a hurt, PO'd person: for a time she offered her pain in a form that reached a lot of people. I think the first three movies work so well because jumping from 20-something to 30-something to 40-something offers three very different human realities. Going from 40 to 50 isn't that stark of a difference, I think. They would inevitably be covering similar ground to what they did in Midnight. Maybe once they're in their 60s they'll feel they have something new to tell.
