Portrait series - Pikangikum First Nation - Maddy King
In this beautiful video portrait, Maddy, an emerging photographer from Pikangikum First Nation (Northern Ontario), explores the influence of photography on her life, articulating how it not only kindles the inspiration for her business ideas but also serves as a catalyst for motivating other young individuals to discover their own passions. Revealing a poignant facet of her personal journey, she shares how some of her photographs serve as a tribute to those she has lost, delving into the realm of grief with love. Beyond her personal experiences, Maddy sheds light on prevalent community issues in Pikangikum First Nation, notably addressing the challenge of alcoholism with a hopeful aspiration for positive change.
In April 2023, Isorine Marc, Jamii's Alchemist (Executive and Artistic Director), collaborated with photographer and videographer Gillian Mapp for Jamii’s fourth visit to Pikangikum First Nation, ON, Canada-an ongoing journey initiated in 2018. Their mission aimed to cast a spotlight on the talents within the community, showcasing not only artists but also community leaders and Elders. The narrative weaves together a tapestry of stories, ensuring that the voices of Pikangikum's artists and leaders resonate far and wide.
A heartfelt acknowledgment is extended to Vanessa Hazel, the dedicated art teacher at Eenchokay Birchstick School, whose support proved instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. Gratitude is also expressed to Eenchokay Birchstick School, the Pikangikum Education Authority, and the entire Pikangikum community for their warm welcome and collaboration. This creative endeavor was made possible with the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council and RBC Emerging Artists, emphasizing the significance of fostering artistic expression and community engagement. May these stories and voices continue to reverberate, fostering understanding and unity.
