0:12 0:33 0:46 This was the first outing of the signs that say "Quality". John Beck put them up because he wanted something for the players to aim at when they hoofed the ball up the field. This sounds like a joke but I've recently been reading about it in a newspaper from the time. Another thing that keeps coming up in the old editions of the local Cambridge paper I've recently been reading is how desperate we are to move to a better stadium and how we simply have to move out of our outdated ground ASAP. Over 31 years on and practically nothing but the away end has changed! This game was part of our disastrous run of 7 home games, where we drew 5 and lost 2 against sides who eventually finished 14th, 17th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 10th and 19th. The Abbey had been a fortress in the run up to September 1991. We'd won 15 and drew 3 of our previous 18 home games in league and cup until then. It was the draws that killed us that season. We drew 16 of our last 33 games! I know football is full of "ifs" but we would've got automatic promotion to The Premier League if we'd scored just 1 more goal in 3 of those 16 drawn games or, in fact, if we'd got 8 rather than just 2 points from those 7 very winnable games I mentioned above.

0:26 That's Liam Daish, whose MOTM award ultimately caused a whole lot of trouble. Cambridge's players had been told to donate any MOTM prize they got to the players' summer holiday fund and when Daish got a sound system worth nearly a grand, manager John Beck demanded he sold it and put the money he raised into said fund. Daish pointed out that a couple of other players hadn't given their prize to said fund and refused to sell his new sound system, which led to him falling out with Beck, who dropped Daish from the team, which then led to Daish demanding a transfer. I don't know how long Daish was left out of the team for but they must have patched things up in the end because Daish stayed at Cambridge until the start of 1994.

I was at that game and remember it well. Philpott had a great game, best I had seen from an opposition player all season.

Alas Leicester would lose the play off final and Cambridge have never reached these dizzying heights since .

I was 12 years old and in the Allotments end terrace. I remember late in the game when the announcer said Southend had lost. The place went potty!!

I was at this game. In the away end. Had my England 1990 white shirt on. Jumped on the railings and they were still sokaed with red wet paint !! Had red paint all over my shirt !! Great goal from Nigel Gleghorn though, a class above that League.

I was in the away end that day along with hundreds of other Norwich fans. I don't think NCFC had a game that day. "On the ball, city" rang out plenty of times that afternoon and the Cambridge fans even joined in. Great atmosphere.

Great night! I was behind the goal in a packed NRE. Loved those days at CUFC.

Yet another costly home draw; our 7th from our previous 13 home games. We drew an incredible 16 of our last 33 matches that season. If we'd scored 1 more goal in just 3 of those 16 games, we would've got automatic promotion to the Premier League! :( Steve Claridge mentions this game in his autobiography. This was the match where he gave John Beck a black eye after they had a punch-up at halftime.

That was surely one of our best goals of that season. I think this was around the time I drank Tony Dennis' tea. I remember waiting to get some players' autographs and Tony turned up and asked me to hold his drink whilst he signed my programme. He then said I could have the tea as it wasn't very nice. I seem to remember that I took a sip and then chucked it away. :) 9:56 Yep, we'd picked up just 5 points from our previous 7 home games. We had this reputation for making The Abbey a fortress and there were all those stories about John Beck putting extra sugar in the opposition's drinks to slow them down, giving them faulty balls to warm up with, turning the heating in their dressing room up full blast and telling the groundsman to grow the grass long in the corners to give us an advantage but actually, our home record wasn't great for a team looking for promotion. We won just 8 of our first 20 home games, 10 out of 23 overall.

At 2-nil up, and about to win the 3rd division, we were singing in the Corona end something like: "We're the Corona we're the Corona over here; you're the Habbin you're the Habbin over there; You're the Welsh c##ts over there; You're the Allotments over there; You're the Main stand over there; We're the Corona over here" etc etc. A crowd of over 9,500 on that Saturday nearly 24 years ago, back in May 1991! Will we top that for Man Utd in the 4th round of the FA Cup (Friday 23 January 2015)?

10:03 I'm just looking back at our results and the final table and it was the draws that done for us in the end. We won our next away game after this but then we won just 8 of our last 28 games. We drew 13 of the other 20. If we'd turned just 3 of those 13 draws into wins, we would've gone up to The Premier League automatically. :( Happy days goo.gl/5zzF0X

Sadly, they would go on to get their revenge at the end of the season. :( Talking of Mick Heathcote: It's almost 20 years to the day since he glared at me when he was lining up to go swimming, as I was being led into the offices at The Abbey Pool by a Policewoman after some tosser who worked there wrongly accused me of damaging the outside of the building with a knife and spraying graffiti.

I was at the start of the open-top bus parade at The Abbey and I remember making Dion and others laugh by pressing the traffic lights outside the ground, just so I could take a photo of the players from the middle of the road. :) Somebody was filming all this but I can't remember if it was a TV crew or just somebody with a camcorder. If anybody reading this has got that footage, then please upload it. I realise it's a long shot!

I do believe this was the first game I ever went to. What a time to become a Cambridge United supporter! Hopefully we're on the verge of another memorable season. Come on Cambridge; we can't lose three play-off finals in a row!
