I built a piano with this rarely used design method.... (building the LEGS)
A follow up build video to my previous DIY 'Rhodes' video, this build details the design and build process behind the leg frame for that piano, with lots of little woodwork tips as I take my design from a modest 3d printed miniature model, through a fine furniture build of a Walnut leg base frame from a very special slab of wood....

Destroying a well known synth to make a Rhodes (a ridiculous build)

Building a custom Rhodes inspired piano for my home studio from a Yamaha Reface CP, merging the electronics from the synth with a mid-century inspired furniture build using Peruvian Walnut, Valchromat, MDF, and American Walnut in the build. While this is a pretty involved build in the woodshop, the basic premise and teardown process is repeatable and allows for endless options of a new custom p...

    I love the Reface Rhodes, and also used to work in carpentry. Your skills are amazing and this build is so fun to watch. Thanks for taking us on this ridiculous voyage 😁😁😁I know where I'm going for studio furniture!

    It does look beautiful... but as someone that has built enclosures for modern hardware myself... eventually you end up tearing it down as it's just too heavy/bulky to have around. Next up : Turning a USB flash drive into a Winchester disk.

    Let me go out on a limb and say that most of the angry commenters would not be able to distinguish between the reface and real thing in a blind listening test. People can't tell synth plugins or processor plugins these days so there's no way anyone is able to tell it's not a real rhodes.

    Teak is an amazing wood. It is so durable and stable, and I think it looks beautiful when oiled. It is a shame it is so expensive, but that's what you get when the trees are almost extinct. I genuinely hope that sustainble forestry can guarantee that we can enjoy this amzing wood in the future too. (I think of all those WW2 warships that had solid 6" teak decks, because of course they had... And then halfway through the war they tore up the decks to lighten the ships. What a waste!) The teak deck of my boat requires almost no maintenance work besides scrubbing it with water and soap once in a while. I have sanded it down a couple of years ago but there is still plenty of wood left if I need to do it again in ten years. Teak becomes a very light gray when left to be exposed to sunlight. This becomes a great silvery nuance that doesn't absorb heat but isn't so reflective that it blinds you when sailing. It turns a darker gray when wet, but that only helps it absorb more light so it dries up quicly once the sun comes out. Teak decks are naturally non-slip and very resistant to wear and tear. A varnished or canvased deck is always goung to be susebtible to puncturing the water-tight surface, but teak just doesn't soak up water, so you can leave it un-treated. I have also restored a bunch of teak furniture from the 1950's and 60's. In most cases all that was required was a careful cleaning with a mild soap and a few coats of satin furniture polish. Legs are usually made of solid wood, so I can sand them down and reapply a new coat of oil and laquer. Legs often have more wear on them due to ferocious vacuum cleaning. Table tops sometimes has stains from hot tea cups or flowerpots so they may require a new layer of veneer. I alway appreciate when furniture builders make table tops (and legs) detachable, so that you can remove the top nd send it through a sander and press new veneer on the surface. This way we can give 60 year old furniture a new life. Furniture that can't easily be disassembled are usually doomed to be scrapped after the surfce finish has worn down.

    Beautiful work and design. That piano looks like a joy to play. The Yamaha seems to be a good enough piece of gear in it's own right but you have elevated it to an instrument that can be loved nd treasured for the rest of your life. (Or as long as the Yamaha electronics lasts, but in case they should break, you could always get another one to put in there.)

    This is a very nice project. Well done! For esier and better soldering, you should get some flux paste. One little jar of paste costs a few bucks and will last you for years. It might not be strictly necessary, because the solder you buy has some flux already in it, but the difference is pretty dramatic. Dip your wires and components in the flux paste and they will soak up the solder like a sponge. You won't have any problem with the solder forming a bead that doesn't want to stick to anything.

    Nice build, but what I don’t really understand is why, with all this meticulous effort and attention to detail, you did not choose a better quality keybed. I think the instrument looks very cool, but I suspect the feel when playing it would be really disappointing to me. I would have searched for a premium wooden hammer action keybed from a defective or second hand instrument. Maybe a little more expensive, but that would be totally justified when looking at the cost of the entire build.

    Nice! I am thinking of building me an eurorack cabinet. Any comments about using good quality plywood vs using solid wood on music related builds? Thanks again for sharing.

    • @Munstre
      @Munstre หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Thanks for checking out the video. For a Eurorack cabinet the biggest consideration with solid wood is really just wood movement, the solid woods will need to expand and contract seasonally a little bit (plywoods are basically a static size due to the alternating orientation of the woodgrains)... but I wouldn't think you should have too much issue since the rails would be attached near the front of the cabinet, which allows the remaining wood to expand/contract as needed. Euroracks tend to be fairly shallow so you shouldn't have to worry much about movement. Plywood will be less work overall, but will leave you with the exposed ply - which on a good quality furniture grade ply still looks pretty nice I think.
