Hello world, my name is Matt Spaugh and I make videos and I take photos. Sometimes I make videos about taking photos, and on occasion I take photos of people making videos. I even make videos about making videos. I'm a photographer, video director, graphic designer, and audio engineer in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to gear reviews and tutorials, I post recent work, personal projects and basically whatever strikes my fancy. Enjoy!
Jasper Pro Rodeo 2024 - Southern Rodeo Company
The Jasper Pro Rodeo 2024 is in the books. Thankfully the rain on Saturday didn't force a cancellation. It was wet, it was muddy, and it WAS A BLAST. Many thanks to all my friends at Southern Rodeo Company and all my rodeo pals - y'all are the best.
I'm settled in equipment-wise with a pair of Sony A7IV bodies, the Tamron 20-40 f/2.8, and a the Sony 70-200 f/2.8. I use a Ronin RS3 pro for my lifestyle footage and dig in with the Innorel LT324C carbon fiber tripod for the events. I use a Manfrotto 502AH fluid head and an Atomos Ninja V monitor.
If you're even remotely considering attending a pro rodeo event, I strongly encourage you to go. There is nothing like the sights and sounds (and smells) of being there - experiencing the excitement and athleticism of both the competitors and stock up close and LIVE.
If you have any questions about my approach to shooting rodeo, or any suggestions on ways I can do a better job, please comment below. Thanks for watching!

Modern Cats, Vintage Glass. Ep. 3 - Canon FD 55mm f/1.2

Modern Cats, Vintage Glass is a series of videos featuring random moments the daily lives of our cats Buddy, Puss, and Cheebo. Each video uses just one vintage lens from my collection. Episode 3 features one of the OGs of FDs! The "chrome nose" Canon FD 55mm f/1.2. They're not exactly cheap these days, but if you can find one in good condition they're wonderful to work with and should appreciat...

Welcome to Episode 2 of "Modern Cats, Vintage Glass". The second installment of videos featuring random moments the daily lives of our cats Buddy, Puss, and Cheebo. Episode 2 was shot entirely with the Nikon Nikkor-N Auto 24mm, f/2.8 lens which definitely has its quirks but can be a joy to use. Flaring can be harsh, but is very predictable. Distortion is a evident but a really close minimum foc...

The end of the 2023 season was bittersweet for me. As the season was winding down, every minute felt precious but at the second to last rodeo I shot last year, I was not on top of my game. Equipment issues, struggling with lighting conditions, being pre-occupied by attendees - it was hard and I came away with what I felt like was less than my best. Truth be toId, I felt like a failure and I wan...
Calhoun Stockyards Pro Rodeo 2023 - Southern Rodeo Company

Way, way, way behind on this footage from the Stockyards at Calhoun, Georgia. Lighting was challenging - lots of varying flicker rates on the generator lights meant trying to set a variable shutter speed was impossible. Nevertheless, I feel like I got some good rodeo action. I wish this could come even remotely close to what it feels like to be at these events. There is truly nothing like it in...
Buying Vintage Lenses: Japan to USA
มุมมอง 2193 หลายเดือนก่อน
After years of buying vintage lenses domestically, I finally made an international purchase! I was concerned about possible hiccups in the process but, at least in my case, there were none so I thought I'd share my experience with anyone who is considering buying from Japan. My lens arrived REALLY quickly, was exactly as described, and performs wonderfully. Featured in this video: - - - - - - -...
Secret Weapon for Filming Yourself Alone

If you're a content creator chances are you have to film yourself, by yourself. I've found an unlikely secret weapon to help get the job done quickly and accurately. It's also a huge help on-set when staging scenes or adjusting set dressing. Spoiler alert: its the humble wireless transmitter. In this video I show the unit that I'm currently using and go over a couple of the most common scenario...

iFootage Shark Slider Nano & Komodo K5S: A Winning Combo!
มุมมอง 9117 หลายเดือนก่อน
Everyone loves the iFootage Shark Slider Nano but I was never been able to get the performance I wanted out of mine until now. I underestimated the value of having a carefully balanced camera load. Long focal lengths and extended slide range can easily introduce micro-jitters to your footage. In this video I go over the two things I found that made the difference between frustrating footage and...

It is impossible (for me, anyway) to describe the incredible athleticism that is on display at the rodeo: human, bovine and equine. I know there are some hard hits in this video and I don't mean to show anyone at their worst or sensationalize the falls. Showing the toughness of the riders is what I hope to convey. This stuff is no joke - and when you're lucky enough to get close to action, you ...

Back again with more rodeo action. This time from Gainesville Georgia. It was a pretty wild couple of nights. Team Equine and Team Bovine definitely brought their A-game but the cowboys and cowgirls prevailed in the end. I tried something new and kept score this time around. Super !
Thanks! And thanks for watching.
I have a question sir. What do you do to children that are not comfortable with camera or getting spot light, no matter how you make them feel comfortable, especially if a child has a special needs. Its really hard because some parents are expecting unrealistically. I hope Im making sense. thanks in advance.
There is only so much you can do. Obviously, trying to be up-beat and energetic can help. I try to approach them on their level - not standing up and towering over them if that makes sense - and just talk to them before taking any photos. Another tip I got long ago was take a LOT of photos and keep talking. You never know when something you say might get a good reaction. I always ask about things that I think might make them relax: pets, favorite foods, vacation trips, etc. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.
I think I understood your recommendation. But if I'm using for a podcast (no music), you like turning on the Hi-Pass filter. I tried both ways, and I think it's clearer with it on. Thoughts?
Yes, for spoken word I always engage the hi-pass filter. Thanks for watching!
Looks like the mirrors need cleaning on the dark spots right of the student
Considering that this video is over three years old and I don't even own that camera anymore... I'm sure that got taken care of at some point...
I'm not sure what "LUT" means. Please do tell...
LUT is short for "Look Up Table". When you shoot your footage using a Log profile (in my case Sony S-Log3) a LUT is applied to the footage when editing to add color and contrast. You can think if it like a filter although it's doing much more than that.
Nice results! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
I've been using this tripod head for 5 years and the tilt lock on the right side (unlike every other video tripod since the beginning of time) has bugged me since the first day I laid hands on it. I never thought to reverse it like that... brilliantly simple. Gonna try it on my next shoot! Thanks!
it took me a while to get used to mounting my cameras backwards on the quick release plate, but other than that, it's literally been a game changer in terms of usability. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Awesome! Was planning to purchase the course, now I'm sold. Many thanks for this review!
If you're anything like me, you won't regret it. Thanks for watching!
Very useful with refreshing informations
I'm glad you enjoyed my video. Thanks for watching.
This man's American English is good, and pleasing to my ears, he's well educated. I'm in international wire service ( thank god ) but still, I respect the work he does, shooting ID photos for school children etc. Because any men or women who can make a decent living out of photography is an outstanding person in his own craft. Keep teaching men, you're good. @frame25_ren
Thank you so much for your encouraging comment. I'm glad you found my video helpful. Thanks for watching.
How much does that type of work pays?
Thank you so much for this video. I mean it.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Had your return to home altitude too high
i found myself in the position of having to do headshots for 80 8th graders on short notice, having never really taken a headshot before. this video saved me a ton of time and helped me produce professional results for the kids' yearbook. thank you so much!
Garrett, you made my day! It make me so happy to know that this slice of information is helping people get the job done! Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience. Rave on!
Very interesting to see your usage of broad lighting here. My instinct is always to go for short lighting for portraits. Is there a reason for your choice, or is it more of a "I just like the way this looks better" sort of thing?
I short light adults and broad light kids. In my experience, many younger subjects, have a tendency to turn their faces away from the light. Broad lighting them helps to reduce that tendency. Great question - thanks for watching!
Such an informative video. Thank you sooo much.
I'm glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Hey Matt - Stumbled onto your channel and this video and perfect timing... I've watched at least 50 high volume videos over the last week as I'm about to do my first gig with a MS band. This is by far the best video I've watched. I had most of the pieces, but just didn't quite know how to fit them together into a process, and this video provided much clarity. Congrats! You are as good of an educator as you are a photographer! Can't wait for the 3 year follow-up!
It makes me so happy to hear that this video is helping people. Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching. Good luck with your session.
Excellent work. Thank you.
I'm glad you liked it. It was a fun one to do. I'd just bought my first mat light and thought it would be fun to try and slightly adjust my position and framing for each shot. Looking back at this, some worked better than others! Thanks for watching.
I can't believe this has less than 2k views. Superb job.
Thanks Peter. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it seems like the harder I work and the more I post, the less engagement I get. It's a weird medium to try and figure out. I've finished scripts for 3 more videos, just waiting to get the time to cut and edit them. Hope you're well. It's good to hear from you.
Thank you saved me a mental breakdown
Glad it worked out for you! Thanks for watching and sharing the good news.
Good that you woke up and smelt the tripod.
oh my fucking god
Fantastic tutorial! No fluff. I love the setup tips both for Capture One and for the physical lighting setup
Glad you found it helpful. You might want to check out part II if you haven't already. Thanks for watching!

Great shots of lovely cats- Philip Bloom would be proud!
HA - the highest praise ever! I cannot deny the influence Philip has had on me. I actually sent him the link to this video but sadly got no reply. Thanks for watching.
I revisited your GH06 Tripod head video and noticed the series of "Modern Cat "videos and thought they were great cheers!@@MattSpaugh
@@patrickpeters_motorsportvideo thanks. Those are fun to do. That 24mm Nikon-N surprised me. I've got another one finished that uses the Canon FD 55mm f/1.2. Should drop in a week or so. I've got another tripod video that's about to hit too. An Innorel carbon fiber that I've been using for a few months. Really loving it. Thanks for watching!
This is incredibly helpful! Thank you. Do you mind sharing where you got your backdrop? So pretty and not the typical harsh school portrait backdrop!
Funny you should ask! I paint my own backdrops. My very first two videos on the channel are how-to videos on painting your own backdrops. Check 'em out! Thanks for watching.
Great video! Wondering if you've ever considered using a pop-up collapsible backdrop. They are so convenient to transport and fast to setup/take down, and 6'x7' is plenty of size for this work.
I use those for smaller jobs or single on-site headshots but I much prefer my hand-painted backdrops. They add more depth, and create unique images that I feel set my work apart. Thanks for watching.
Hey! Your production quality is amazing.... hope to get close to that one day.... Have you ever done live streaming (no post production work).
thanks for the kind words. I've produced a number of live streams for customers (I do a multi-cam stream weekly for one of them). It's a bit of a different game but many of the core principles as far as lighting, audio and camera selection are the same. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for suprt fine video. I just j resive the Nano slider and must now find good solid tripod for it, maby from Ifootage? When the slider used horisontal where it not are so strong its it maby better to use a ballhead that ligther? I will try. Thanks for fine video
I'm using an inexpensive Innorel tripod that has a 75mm ball head that gives good support and is easy to get level. I'm working on a review of it now, stay tuned! Thanks for watching.
omg! 3 years of using this and I did not think of it..... so obvious! thank you!
Better late than never! Thanks for watching.
Great content!
Thanks so much. I appreciate the encouragement.
Great info-thank you!
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Honestly I was not using this tripod for that very same fluid head mixup reason. And also one of my legs dented a little and there is tension now while pulling the legs out and pushing them back in. Thanks for the is video I am going to try it tomorrow. I’ll let you know and let you know how it goes do.
Cool, I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. Thanks for watching.
Interesting. I have 3 S8 heads and like them. I have a 502AH and hate it. My cam ops always complained about its performance as well.
In my experience, there is a difference between the earlier made S-series heads and the newer PRO models. Maybe mine was just made on a bad day but between the issues I had and Benro's unwillingness to help get to the source of the issue, I no longer use any Benro equipment. To each their own - thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Rave on!
@@MattSpaugh I checked mine out today and they don't have the wiggle. They are just the S8's though. I had a meh experience with support when I had one tripod that has a twist lock (untwist too far and it breaks) instead of snap lock that I needed help with. Shipped it to them and they returned it. Felt like there was one single person who provides customer support and fixes things.
Hi Matt, I'd like to just curious are you able to disassemble the monopod so that you can put in a rucksack such as the nat geo medium
You can remove the head, and the legs fold upward toward the body, but it does not break down any further than that. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.
@@MattSpaugh thank you, these are the bag's dimensions 28 x 11 x 43 cm, do you think folded it would fit?
@@Nobody76World 43cm is about 17". The folded length of the monopod is just over 24" - closer to 60cm so no, it would not fit.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching.
Fantastic work Matt!
Thanks - they're all great, but this one was really awesome.
Very good video! Thanks alot!🙏
Glad you found it helpful, thanks for watching.
Hey Matt, appreciate this video. I wasn't aware of the 438 leveler till this video. Will the center column still be able to go horizontal on the 055 with the 438 on it?
Yes, the 438 does not effect the horizontal position of the column. It does add some weight so make sure you sandbag your tripod. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
@@MattSpaugh thank you brother, appreciate the response and the video
Cool!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.
Great looking setup! I have learned to shoot my photos about a stop or so over when shooting in lower light to reduce the noice. It's a great trick! Thanks for sharing your setup.
This video is fairly old and a lot has changed (maybe I should do an updated version). It's really interesting how much has stayed the same. I'm using newer cameras these days and shooting S-Log 3 so over-exposing is definitely still in the mix. Thanks for watching!
That's cool! I got to photograph the Easter egg hunt at Pine Grove Baptist last year. I think that there was more action there than the Rugby tournament that I photographed over the summer. I also photograph their "Pioneer" luncheon (50+ year old) when I am off work for it. I would love to get started with a photography business, but seems like every paid gig that I get falls apart before it transpires.
I do this one for free for them and it's a TON of work. I shoot for 5 nights (M-F) and then have to turn an edit around by the following Sunday morning for their worship service. I've managed to streamline it a little over the years and it's a fun one but make no mistake, it's work. Thanks for watching!
This is fantastic, of course. A bit intimidating for those of us still filming on the iPhone, but it explains why your work is so professional and 'chef's kiss' level. Thanks, Matt.
Thanks so much! It's a process and we're all at a different point in the journey. Hopefully videos like this one help people get a little further down the road. Thanks for watching and for the kind words.
wow! great content. thanks a lot. instant sub💪 one little question: how (or do you) set the white balance?
I shoot RAW images so I don't have to set white balance but I like to have images on screen that look accurate, especially if the client is going to be reviewing them. My strobes fire at a consistent 5600K so I leave it there. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you found something helpful in the video.
@@MattSpaughi see. thank you for the quick and thorough reply.
Great video! I’ve been using a pair of CineEye transmitters (the original models) for several years on shoots of all kinds. Absolutely adore them.
They are the bomb! I've used the Hollyland transmitters as well and I like them but I prefer the horizontal form factor of the Accsson units. Thanks for watching!
Great video
Thx!
Thanks so much for the incredible review, Matt! I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the masterclass and ecstatic that you took the time to make this review. Much, much appreciated, brother.
Right on. That course is good stuff - I've already gone back and reviewed some of the content for jobs I'm working on. I've paid for a number of online courses and have been disappointed with most of them. Finding a good one is worth sharing! Keep up the great work on your channel, you've helped me streamline my workflow immensely!
That LUT pack is really awesome too. I thought about doing a reivew just on those! They definitely made my first episode of "Modern Cats, Vintage Glass" a lot stronger. And, I FINALLY found footage I could use the "Jaco" LUT on. It's on one of the shots in Episode 2 which uses the Nikon Nikkor-N 24mm lens. It's sheduled to drop week after next.
Love to hear it, Matt! Thanks so much for the love 👊🏼@@MattSpaugh
Thank you so much for your in-depth share. This has been a Swiss army knife for me over the last two years. Thank you so much for the insight and for being so open with this vast amount of knowledge.
That makes me so happy - just to know that somehting I put out there is helping people get the work done and ENJOY IT - awesome. Thanks for letting me know. Have a good one!
