    i have two very productive bushes. They also have a super long shelf life if I pick, bag and refridgerate them. Even after 3 weeks I was ready to rinse & juice them. I use them in smoothies as whole berries. I also cold press juice and strain to get a liquid without all the fiberous skin. LOVE THEM.

      I like tossing them into smoothies as well! Fridge space is at a premium for us so I end up freezing a lot of them.

    Hi Correne. I have a question about oregano. Can I harvest oregano after it flowers to use in a tincture?

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For tinctures I prefer that it is flowering. Ideally early in its flowering season. If its too late the plant will not have the potency you are hoping for. Hope that helps!

    I noticed on several videos that you do not wash your vegetation after you harvest them before prepping is there any particular reason for that or that's just your way

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes I have a few reasons why I do this. The main reason is that wet herbs would throw off the alcohol amounts in my medicine which I don't want. But if I wait for them to dry they will be wilted and less vital. Also when you wash them you often wash away pollen which I want in my end product as well. It's a personal choice, everyone has to do what feels best for them!

    Hmmm....what if the herbs are freeze dried? I wonder how that impacts the loss of some medicinal properties having to do with water content? My understanding is that freeze drying preserves a lot more of what you're preserving compared to simply dehydrating...???

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So here is what's CRAZY about SJW and I have no explanation on how this works but here goes. Take it internally - photosensitive. Have it crushed on your hand... could cause you to burn faster. BUT somehow in an oil its magic and actually protects my skin. I use it in my face oil now too and use that year around and zero issues. I never store them in the fridge. Just not in a hot place and they are fine for about a year.

    Do you wash the herbs?

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do not! I have a few reasons for this. First, I know exactly how they are grown and where they came from. No sprays, pesticides etc. Second, washing them causes one of two issues. First, the water on the plants throws off my alcohol percentage which I don't want. But if I let them dry out... then they are wilted and less potent. So I personally opt not to wash them, but its ultimately up to you! Personal preference :)

    Yummy! Right now my favorite shrub flavor is cherry orange vanilla. I also really like lime to replace the orange sometimes. A little more sharp instead of sweet. I also like this shrub with frozen cherries and half and half in a blender. Easy (and healthier) ice cream!! 😍

    • @lisaburkeyoga
      @lisaburkeyoga 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do use orange slices with some of the peel. 🍊I think the peel brings out more of the tart and bitter flavors that work well with the sweet of the flesh and juice. 😍 The lime doesn’t need as much of the peel since it’s such a bright flavor profile already, but the peel still brings more flavor.

    Thank you! I am new to this tincture making, (although have used them for many years). I am actually waiting for some from a great herbal company. Question: I was wondering if it is necessary to fill the jar to the very top? Can we leave space, or will that create a problem? Also, is 30% alcohol enough for most tinctures? I ask because there are many ideas about this. A friend told me 40% - 80 proof vodka. And others like it much higher. Any input would be great. I am asking a lot of questions, sorry. I would buy a book if you have one? i really appreciated this video. You are a great teacher. Thanks again!

      Hi there! I like to fill as close to the top as possible to avoid oxidation. But it's very much personal preference. I use 30% alcohol and 10% vegetable grade glycerin. That brings the total to 40%. If you are not using glycerin, then yes, you would want 40% alcohol. I have been making tinctures this way for well over a decade and they have served my needs and the needs of my clients very well. And I do have a book! Thanks for asking. After you strain it and if you keep it in the fridge how long will it last? I made the blueberry and lemon balm. Love it. Trying to stop drinking soda and replace with these shrubs.

    Vanilla extract and coconut oil, put both in a small bottle and rub it on when your going to be out when the mosquito's are out. We use this when we are out on the river and get no bites at all.

      I never have so I am basically guessing here. I wouldn't add more than 1/2 a tsp personally because it has such a strong flavour. Don't forget you will need to add something to make it more bioavailable (such as extra ginger or black pepper).

    This looks wonderful! I'm going to make it today as I have an abundance of basil. I did make blueberry hyssop shrub. I used anise hyssop which I would not suggest because it's a little overpowering so regular hyssop is better . I am looking forward to using the combination of white wine vinegar and ACV you suggested as the ACV alone is a strong flavor. Thank you for all you do!!

      You are most welcome! I love the combo of hyssop and blueberry though. I wonder what the anise could pair well with in terms of fruit since it has that fennel/licorice flavour to it. Hmmm.

      I'm sorry I don't know. I haven't owned a microwave in 18 years so I'm truthfully not sure how they work in terms of cooking. If you can make a regular lasagna/eggplant parm in it normally I don't see why not.

    Good morning! I am pressing some of my tinctures. The stinging nettle tincture seems to have left a dark stain on the upper portion of the mason jar. There was not any notable traces of anything growing in the tincture. Just this stain at the top portion of the jar. Is that normal?

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hiya! The dark stains are likely caused by the resins and tannins in the herbs. But I would really check that lid and check for any corrosion of the metal. If you didn't use parchment paper as a barrier that could also be a cause and then its possible the tincture is contaminated. Hope that helps.
