6 Rookie Herbal Mistakes You Can Avoid Making!
I so appreciate your candidness Correne. We have the same problem. I started out thrilled when I discovered nettles and colts foot, chickweed- but devastated when it took over EVERY INCH of my garden. I have spent the summer digging it up and will replant in Spring. Are you using the plastic for all of your spaces? How will you manage to keep the plants you want?
What about buying fresh oregano from the market? Is it fresh enough to make tincture ? cause I am not growing them 🙏
If you can get fresh from the market that is a great option!
Thank you
Welcome!
Thank you
My pleasure!
Excellent tutorial - wonderful teacher just found you!! So thankful

Excellent tutorial - wonderful teacher just found you!! So thankful
Thank you!
I just found your channel. Thank you for walking us through the steps.
You are most welcome! Thanks for watching my video.
Just seeing this a year after you posted. My first full year with my veggie garden here and decided to put plastic over the beds about a month ago, for the winter to start killing the weeds/grass coming through the soil and to plant through next season. Glad I didn’t let myself get to your level of frustration before trying it. Hope it worked well for you this past growing season.
I just posted this actually :) In 2024. So hopefully it works well for us.
What temperature should I use for warming?
You want temperatures similar for yogurt making. 43-46C is ideal. Even lower would work as well. You just don't want too hot!
Augment your beds before using landscape fabric. I use it for my squash patch and plants like okra. I used the black plastic for onions as it helps hold the moisture in and keeps the weeds down. I’ve seen on so other homesteading blogs where they’re using silage tarps in overwintering the beds to again help with weed suppression. They work beautifully! I tried it last spring as I had 1 garden that I just couldn’t get to and the weeds were looking very vigorous. So I tried it! Weeds dead in a week. Awesome! The plastic is pretty thick is white on 1 side and black on the other so black side up. Now they come in a tube as they are for what I call the silage snakes you see at dairy farms and they cut nicely with a pair of scissors or a razor knife. I found remnants from a local Mennonite and they weren’t expensive. I used the landscape pins to hold them down then reused the pins when I put the fabric down instead. Get yourself a small butane torch for burning holes, much easier than a lighter and refillable. Easy peasy. Again augment your soil before laying the tarp or fabric. 👍 You’ll love gardening again😉
Thanks for your comment! The garlic is already in so we can't do anything for those beds. What augmentation for the soil do you recommend?
@SpiraeaHerbs you may want to have your local cooperative extension do a soil test before adding anything but it can be anything from bonemeal ( garlic and onions) to rabbit poo to goat/alpaca poo as the ruminates manure don't burn though the urine will. Leaves, straw both are great especially chopped. Composted wood chips, no walnuts though, grass clipping, egg shells, your compost pile. Go with what you have . Beware of bagged compost from big box as there is beginning to see GRAZON damage. I'm frugal with using what I have. Newspaper and cardboard do a great job as weed barriers too. Then top with a good layer of leaves or grass clippings. Hope that helps get your imagination going. I've even picked up bags of leaves destined for the landfill😆😆
@@barbaradeclerck7341 Oh okay I see what you mean. Yes we add layers of leaves and grass all the time. Mulched comfrey as well. We hope to get some good compost next year to add some in. We often try to use what we have as well.
@@SpiraeaHerbs I’ve heard comfrey is a wonderful addition to mulch. Tons of minerals in it.
I have 75% alcohol. Is that suitable for making tumeric tincture.?
That's a high percentage and likely a bit overkill (in my opinion! please do your own independent research). I personally would water it down a bit.
Love the garden to table point of view! Super helpful video!
Thank you! And thanks for watching :)
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 BALANCE between the polarities in ideologies / beliefs has been a big theme coming up for me recently as well! Thank you for sharing! ♡
You are most welcome! Balance is so important in this journey as well is constant reflection. Thank you for watching.
Check out Acre Homestead. Becky just planted her garlic and she uses the filter cloth. When they moved, she had huge beds built and she uses the sheeting in all of them.
Thank you! I will check her out.
I would put something over the black plastic just to help keep it cooler under there for help the roots not get too hot. Keep on planting. you're not alone ❤
That's a good idea. Insulate it in the winter but also keep it cooler when we do get nice and hot. Thanks!
Good on you for following your dreams and for doing whatever, you need to in order to make it work. All the best 🙏🏼💕🙏🏼
It was a great lesson in compromise and deciding what hill NOT to die on! Lol
I really appreciate your honesty. After years of gardening weeds and some crops, I turned to porous weed fabric. I had so much less stress and the plants seemed to do well. By the way, I still let sacrificial wild plants grow in certain places, both for pest control and for harvesting them myself. Glad you found a way to enjoy gardening again!
Oh yes we do too! Those wild plants grow all around my property and I often use them for medicines and as attractive bate for pests as well.
Those are 5gal buckets and thats alot of weeds! Unless they start to shred apart, do not worry about the black plastic sheets! You are doing great!
So many weeds. I would often just sit in the garden and cry because it seemed never-ending. I would go back out a week later and they would all be growing back strong. Hoping this is the solution!
I know its months later, but I have some white plums and purple basil and that might make a wonderful combination.
That sounds delicious!
What do you suggest for Strep Throat?
Due to strict Health Canada regulations and rules set forth by Google I am unable to provide specific medical advice. What I can say is that you need both antimicrobials (like the remedy in this video) and immune stimulants to fight strep effectively. You also have to attend to diet as well and ensure good whole foods are being consumed.
Isn’t it a weed?
One person's weed is another person's medicine :)
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Can you mix a ginger tincture with turmeric tincture to increase its bioavailability? Or black pepper with the turmeric tincture for the same purpose?
You absolutely can! Personally I prefer to make all of my tinctures separately and then blend for my clients. For example, if a new client doesn't tolerate a lot of heat I may want to start them on a formulation that has 10% turmeric and 5% ginger. Once they've done one round at that level, I can then choose to increase it to 15% turmeric and 5% ginger which is my preference as a catalyst. I can't do that if I made the turmeric and ginger in the same jar. Does that help!
The mezzaluna in your 'more information' isn't available anymore (RATS!): Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock. Blade material Stainless Steel Brand HIC Kitchen
I have a question? What is the difference between a shrub and an oxymel. They look similar to me
Honestly they are very similar in the fact that they both use vinegar and honey. The main difference is in purpose. Oxymels usually have a clear medicinal purpose and were traditionally used to make unpalatable herbs taste better. Shrubs are for drinking and while you can add herbs, traditionally they were made with only fruit. They were a method of preservation. Does that help?
Thank you. I'm going to make this tomorrow.
Most welcome!
Skeeter Vac by Blue Rhino - it's pricey, but it works. I got mine as a wedding present. It has multiple features all working together - I don't use the sticky trap, because I would get bird feathers, but using the rest of the features - propane, uv light, vacuum, and hormone bait cleared my riverfront home on the river. Before I started using it I couldn't go outside without long pants and sleeves, which isn't practical most of the year where I am.
Thank you so much for sharing! We have been looking at a skeeter vac but its really nice to hear someone's testimony firsthand. Appreciated.
Can I use dried hyssop? I have dried herbs and fresh.
Use what you have for sure! Fresh is best BUT dried is better than not making it at all!
Thank you ❤
Nice. I’m currently making a black turmeric tincture with my home grown harvest 🌱💚
Oh that's amazing! I want to figure out how to grow it indoors.
Is it ok to keep adding fresh plant matter to an already-started tincture?
This is a great question! So to be very frank... you can do whatever you want! Lol. BUT, I personally would not do that. I would make smaller quantities if I only had small amounts of herbs available at one time. I would rather have a bunch of 100ml jars rather than continually exposing the jar to oxygen. But that is my personal preference.
Thank you...
I use my dehydrator at 95 degrees for 24 hours
That works!
Do you have to add apple cider vinegar?
If you don't add vinegar then its not an oxymel. You can make an infused honey if you'd like but you would lose the benefits that the vinegar provides.
Can you use dehydrated mint and lemon balm if you cannot get fresh?
You certainly can! If you can get fresh lemon balm because dried just isn't the same, but use what you have :)
Thank you so much for sharing, in order of straining do you warm the honey again?
I actually find I've never had to! Perhaps its the fresh herbs in the honey, but it never solidifies again. In my experience only though! If it did, yes I would gently warm it again.
@@SpiraeaHerbs Thank you , so happy I found your Chanel, I already saw few video and learned new things. I truly appreciate all the knowledge that you shared with passion and nice balance between science and spiritual.
@@transform6833 I'm so glad that you are here too! Thanks for sharing your time with me.
Hi Correne. Great video. Thanks. Where do you buy your olive oil and which brand is it? Oh and btw, the cutter is currently unavailable on amazon. Will continue using my pizza cutter until one is available. Lol
We get our olive oil from Costco. Brand is Terra Delyssa :) Thanks for letting me know. I'm sure they will get it back in stock soon.
Thank you for your content it’s excellent, very informative, also to comment on your question about mosquito repellent plant some Yarrow flowers. They’re great for repelling mosquitoes or make a spray that you can put on your skin with Yarrow.

You are most welcome. The herbs you can dehydrate yes. Or you could do a herb salt! Lots of options.

The cat 😭😂! Thank you, thank you, thank you…. For addressing the metal lid issue! I’ve been milling over this and it’s been restricting me buying the jars I need because of the lid material (I’m actually buying jam like jars not mason). So yeah thanks for clarifying for me I will just go ahead a buy them!
Oh the cat! He just loves to make an appearance. And you are most welcome. I am slowly transitioning to plastic lids, but in the meantime parchment paper will work too!
This is my first year growing my own ginger. It is almost time to harvest it so I'm of course searching for all the ways I can use it! THIS is definitely on my list now along with a tincture and maybe an oil. Thanks for your great videos!
You are most welcome! I'd love to hear more about growing ginger. Did you grow it inside? Greenhouse?
Can you go at your own pace for school?
Depends on the school. The one I attended... no. I would also have you consider if you need a full program. Are you planning on opening a clinic one day or do you just want to know how to support you and your family? Maybe a few friends? Those goals are very different and actually open up a lot of education options for you (including things like my membership platform!)
can this help ease chronic migraine headaches? please help. ❤
Traditionally this is not a plant that is used for migraines no. As for suggestions... my hands are tied. Health Canada and TH-cam both have rules that I have to follow. I would suggest working with a herbalist because there are definitely LOTS of things that can be done to support migraines.
