New wood gas gasifier project flaring again... 2

Flared for a hour today. Put dry chip over the wet chips we have been using. While I did poke it down once, it ran much better once it got to the dryer feed stock. Gas output was much better as well and cleaned up nicely. I'll have to make a more effective cooler and filter before I run the genset again. I figure we made about 2Kw of hot water ( very small heat exchanger total of 7.5 gallons) d...

trying our new bottom end... I think this will be the one. Still needs better cooling. I have added a small gas to liquid heat exchanger to see if I can get the gas outlet temp down to a manageable range for our small cooler.
New wood gas project, 2nd build with some internal changes

Changed out a piece in the gasser to see if it helps make better gas. First thoughts are I think it's the way to go... just have to finalize a couple of things and i'll try this running a genset.

So we took this new build outside to see if we could make some wood gas with the wet chips we have on hand. We did flare it for over an hour.. I suspect a better cooler and filter are in order before we try running our genset on it... More to follow.

After some tinkering around to get some operator induced plugging corrected, the genset started on the first pull.

the unit typically lights better than this... as we have been running really wet feedstock I didn't really poke it enough to know there was a hollow developing.. had to take the lid off again and poke it down to get it to make consistent gas I should have known something was up when there was what looked to be like more chips in the hopper than expected from yesterdays burn.

Opening the reactor after being run and allowing it to cool down air tight over night. I think i'll try once more grate revision and if it works accordingly i'll see about hooking it up to a filter and cooler and run an engine with it.

First time start up of my new design... to be honest, I'm kinda impressed that it's working as well as it is.

Yes, I"m tired... haven't really slept alot since I started this build. Hopefully all will go as planned and it will make gas... I know I'll slep a lot easier once it does. Richard figures it weighs around 50lbs with the ejector on it... I'll put it on a scale to be sure, but it is much lighter than current unit.

I know I know, I haven't shown anything in the video... That's mainly because I'm torn between two ways that I'm thinking of... one is dirty and simple but doesn't include any waste heat capturing... and I hate waste... more to come.

many small tractors use ballast in the front to keep the wheels down, so gasifier in the front actually might make handling better.
Hermoso
How do you describe the MPG? Like pounds per mile? Or miles per pound?
Someone already said it... it's the coolest tractor I've ever seen... One question: the wood you put in the gasifier, are they chips?... or pellets. Thanks for the video.
I just got a Case 310 utility tractor, I can't find any more videos talking about the controls of the tractor, do you guys know how to find more information I will really appreciate it. I was reading some comments on blogs that talks about the controls, pretty much I want to know about the hand clutch, is the lever on the left side of the tractor when you are seating on it. I have to have the hand clutch lever on the up position for the tractor to move? because when the lever is down it will not move. Thanks
Good job
Good job
hola!!, soy de argentina y quiero construir un gasificador igual a ese, podrias pasarme fotos de como son sus partes para asi hacer algo similar con las cosas que tengo?, saludos cordiales !! Hello !!, I am from Argentina and I want to build a gasifier just like that one, could you pass me photos of what its parts are like to do something similar with the things I have? Kind regards !!
this engine is diesel?

That's awesome cuz you can use the tractors PTO to turn a generator to charge some batteries in a grid down situation to keep the lights on maybe run a radio
this is really cool for people live in forest and couldnt afford for gasolin
I think so too. Lots of wood in northern ontario
do you ever have a problem with overheating?
Over heating where?
any update on this one?
Would this work for m35 deuce1/2 military surplus truck? The engine is considered be multifuel but the diesel is the preferred fuel. It would be an excellent option for an trailer behind the Deuce.
does it have spark plugs?
@@pamelamathers7911 if it uses diesel it dosent.
Hi i have just seem your clip,i am looking at building a gasifier, can you help me with the plans thank you Dave.( Australia)
we sell completed units. ben petersens wood gas builders bible may be the thing youre looking for
Your grand children will be able to say. Grand dad has the coolest John Deere tractor to be found, for miles around. And I agree. The Coolest.
so cool
Your engine might overheat it can't get any air
Oh sorry I didn't see that the condenser was there
At least you posted the video and showed that things don't always go perfectly. Others hide when it dosn't go perfect and we all no who they are.
yup... not a good representation of flame colour at all. I'll probably do a similar cooler set up as the system sent to yellow knife and add a water jacket to the first tower. we'llsee what happens when I get there
I don't see a water condenser on the producer I think it could help...finnally back on mine.... Say hi to Terry for me...
the genset ran for about an hour but I suspect that it's having some plugging issues do to my poor air preheat design.... If the engine starts on gasoline after i've let it cool down all day (meaning not tarring of the valves) I'll rebuild the reactor differently. Here's hoping
If you are having tar issues, your burn temperature in the reactor is too low. raising the temp. with channeled air (Much like a forge) will crack the tar problem. After that it is just soot and moisture. or Carbon and Water. A water filter can clean the Carbon, then it is easy to dry the gas with a couple regular filters. This will clean up your gas and prolong the running life of your generator. I suggest viewing flash001USA for cracking the tar, and Josefppaz for water filtration ideas. I hope this helps!
thanks for the information. you may like checking out my other build videos under wood gas tractor project
I might add the internals are nothing like imbert... the plugging issues were from not removing any of the fines from my feed stock and how my air pre heat was being managed.
Cooool!
1st grate version. Did get some plugging...
I love this post, thanks for it. I started building my woodgas project and even posted a few videos but health put it on back burner for a bit. About to start on it again and will post updates. I am trying to make mine portable and compact but still big enough to run the old truck. Biggest problem I have faced is building it in a way to run many things off of it. Old Chevy truck, Ford truck, tractor, generator, trencher, etc... Again, thanks. Every little bit I find, helps me on my project.
onewyatt1 Thank you. I'm at the point with gasifiers where there isn't anything I'd change in the reactor it's self. I've been fine tuning the cooler and filter systems and think I'm on the money with them now. Our most current system is the unit I just shipped to Yellowknife NWT. in testing it was up to heat and making good gas in 5 minutes, hand pulled a genset to start it on wood gas... started on the 4th pull... just like it should :)
International Supply I have left my design easy to modify figured I would have to do a good bit of fine tuning. Hoping to be able to change out throat in bottom of reactor depending on what size motor I want to run off of it at the time. My cooling system will be the hardest thing to build. I wanted to keep it easy to clean and draining in one direction. I am hoping I can move it between equipment. It will have a limited fuel capacity but it will only take up a 2ft by 4ft space and stand about 4ft tall, cooling coil and all. I am just hoping the thing makes gas when I'm finished.
lol... making gas is easy... making engine grade gas tends to be a little more tricky. I know with the system that is on this tractor with some simple changes it can run an engine as small as 5 hp to as large as 25 hp
International Supply Yep, making gas is easy. I have a Kelly Kettle for camping and tried heating beans on top of it, they tasted like creosote. I plan to use mine for 5hp to maybe the V8 in the old Chevy. I am not sure how my changeable parts idea will work out yet. Its the heat problem that I am trying to work around. thinking the changeable parts need to be stainless or home made ceramic from clay I have around here. My fuel hopper will be a little small for truck use but I'm not far from town. Anyway, thanks for your input, I need the motivation it gives me.
I use nothing but mild carbon steel in my builds... just sayin
Nice Lookin machine you got there!!
VulcanGasifier Thanks Matt... I build simple... sorta... lol... at least they look that way. I pulled 3000 watts of load for over 3 hours on this system as a run test... took the normal 5 minutes to get up to heat and running.
I missed the wood gas carb shut off valve at the top of the final filter.....
Looks and sounds real good!
Terrifacation Thanks T, one of these days i'm gonna learn how to build these things... :)
While the wood gas carb shut off valve in this video is plastic, we don't and will not use plastic in final versions...
That's pretty sweet!!! Loved the 4th gear (sorta) power slide!
Thanks buddy... I really like how this machine runs. My son will be out on it this weekend if the weather holds.
Great project thanks!
Hey! Sounds and looks real good! Who's that happy lookin guy drivin it :-) Good on ya. TerryL
Thanks T... I'm diggin it too... so is Rich
It's more the the crank is spinning the the right direction until it works its way out...
Haven't been hit with it yet... pulling would mean use my left arm... that doesn't work so good for me... my shoulder is kinda bad still... I'll get it though. Thanks for the heads up all, it's appreciated
Be careful with the hand crank. Always pull, don't push; don't use your thumb... any backfires should rip it from your grip, not push it towards you. Your technique as shown is a good way to break an wrist...
That sounds sweet.
Good stuff...I'll be watching...
That will be a GREAT advertising tool. Looks like a nice starting point.
Gonna be a fun build
thanks, it was alot of fun (and work) the customer is very happy. It was nice to be able to include my friends in some of the testing, anyone that came out to the shop got to take it for a ride... need more people seeing what wood gas can do.
LOOK MOM.....NO GAS>>>>
LOVE IT great work ,,,
yup Stephen, it starts and runs pretty good. oil was cheap and easy... turn a key and go... sadly people today want push a button and go... kinda lazy... but you pay for that at the pump.
Yeah I've never heard of anyone complain about the quality/power etc behind it. They are pretty stoked that wood now powers the vehicle in question. Shame tho, 5 extra minutes of time to do something you wouldn't normally do could and would change the world if everyone did it to.
@@n2kmasteroriginal wood gas isint wery wiable in western europe because it takes 40kg of wood to ride 100km.
That's a smooth start up! Why did we go back to gasoline after the war???
Running on wood gas is not as effective as gas and sometimes if your filter is not good you have to clean the ash out of your engine which is a big pain
ive never had a filtering problem since i switched to my current filter system
This takes 4 minutes. Turning the key takes 20seconds+ it takes 40kg of wood to ride 100km.

@@DungeonMiser so did you get that i meant youd have to refuel much more ofthen?
thanks Troy
when you're used to getting a lot more water vapour and smoke out of your system. just having a haze of woodgas is really different.
110v. not hard to get a small inverter for starting off the tractor battery. Vacuum uses about 450 watts and is only ran for about 5 minutes to get the reactor up to heat
I would get him to do that today but Rich wants to paint stuff so I'm gonna let him. the gov. did look like it was working... it was moving a lot down in the sand at the far end of the yard... time will tell but it does look promising.
That's just too cool! Get Arv junior pulling that drag round the yard. That will tell about the governor Congratulations!
