French FM Satellite UVSQ-SAT
Welcome Back!
Join me for a pass of the Ultra Rare French Satellite UVSQ-SAT. this is a Cube-Sat used for research purposes, and for some reason it never has the FM Amateur Radio Repeater active. This little cube was activated for a 48 hour period this weekend and hasn't had much traffic on it. Hopefully this is a sign they may activate it more often. Also, Jim (WD5GRW) was running a Parks On The Air activation and caught several contacts via the satellite.

I wanna pair my Ic-705 with an Ft-818 I just picked up to work GEO sats. Thanks for posting the videos. Seeing my First Sat set up back in 1997 at a local Field day is what motivated me to get my licence. That spot in Utah has to be the most beautiful place I have EVER done radio!! I’m the same way every time I see it. You should totally take the leap and try to work some satellites! Even if it’s just an FM satellite with an HT setup but the 705 and 818 would work! Lots of guys use two 818’s so I’m sure it would be the same concept.

    Rob, do you need RF filtering external to the IC-9700, or does the radio cope OK in duplex mode?

    • @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors
      @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am running a dual LMR-400 feedline setup to the two antennas. Teh radio handles everything fine itself. The only time I had any RF issues was when I was trying to get the antennas setup. At first I used a metal cross boom, and I had the antennas both end mounted. The metal boom caused some reflection, but the big one was the driven elements were not lined up parallel. Now they are set on the boom so the driven elements are perfectly side by side, instead of one facing into the back of the other. Once I set them up with a fiberglass rod and the elements parallel, ZERO RF.

    Nice video, Rob; thank you. Regarding the IC-9700 external pre-amp phantom power: Does the IC-9700 automatically switch off the phantom power as soon as you transmit? Or would I need to run a separate TX/RX command-wire to the external pre-amp?

    • @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors
      @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! The 9700 automatically shuts power off to the preamp when you hit transmit. There are two preamp controls on the 9700, the internal is activated by the button on the faceplate. The external power has to be turned on in the menu settings then activated/deactivated through the Menu button under the screen.

      You can get into western Europe with it for sure. I am just west of the Mississippi center US and can get Europe and deep into South America. If you are much west of me though it gets tough to impossible pretty quickly. Of course it’s at low angles and a perfect pass across the Atlantic so you have to find the right pass. If you are lucky enough to be on the East Coast of the US you can get passes pretty deep into Europe.

    • @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors
      @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors หลายเดือนก่อน

      My 9700 is controlled by the CSN Technologies SAT Controller. All Doppler is done automatically by the SAT. if you do not have access to one it’s a bit more complex. FM satellite Doppler is pretty easy. On receive you start 10khz high and work your way to 10khz lower than center frequency. The transmit starts about 2.5-5khz Low and you raise it 2.5-5 kHz higher than center point as the satellite goes overhead. The SSB satellites are a lot more complex because the transponder is taking an LSB signal on vhf and flipping it to a USB signal on uhf and vice versa. If you need further guidance shoot me an email. It is good on QRZ. 73!!!

    I've been meaning to ask how you got your arrow to mount to a tripod like that - This is the kind of tribal knowledge that will save people a LOT of time - Just like your video on the WIMO X Quad assembly. 🌎

      Hel yeah man I’ll check it out! You will need something full duplex to do the linear satellites. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the 991 is not full duplex between 2/440. I’m super excited for you man it’s a great feeling to finally get on the satellites.

      Ok it could be done but it will be super tough. You would have to do manual adjustment of the Doppler for both RRS smit and receive bands. When you get ready to try get ahold of me, a long phone conversation would be best to see if we can get you on.

      Awe man so close!!! Great try with a 5 watt HT! Keep trying the ISS but it’s so packed you might want to try PO-101. It is UHF up VHF down and is only active usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The downlink Doppler is easier to adjust but the uplink Doppler is a little tougher since the UHF needs changed quicker. I appreciate you watching and hopefully I can get a contact with you on the channel! 73, Rob

    When you run 50w are you standing back away from it? When I bought my arrow he told me running more than 10w handheld/holding it on a tripod was unsafe/too close. I'm pretty paranoid now lol

    • @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors
      @W0CYC-HamRadioEndeavors หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely! I only run 50 watts at the very beginning and very end of a pass. Which equals only a few seconds of actual transmit time. I will extend the tripod and mount as high as it will go which is about 6', then stand as far directly behind it as I can get. Thats pretty much the best you can do.
