Do you remember that one piece you did for WarCraft3? Of Illidan/Cenarious and the Nightelves vs the Undead? Was curious if it was digital or on paper! I used to think it was paper until I was looking at it in The Art of Blizzard book and I realized its different from the old picture I had a copy of off the internet! Also, do you enjoy drawing the larger scale things? and what size was the original art piece?

I used to play Warcraft on my family's Macintosh computer back in the 90s. I really liked the orc designs.

That's really cool that you are doing art for them. Looks cool! Though, I checked out Stormgate and it didn't look good to me, too basic and very cartoish/childish like torchlight. Looks too mobile-game for me. I wanted something more brutal and cool. Plus it seems woke, so im not gonna play it. But hopefully you get to do art for games worth your name in the future! Something badass.

You should definitely do a podcast or some episodes called Sam’n Friends and interview/ hang out w friends and talk about art or their art processes! Also finally bought The Last Winter and it’s really cool!

Warcraft III with the original graphics (not Reforged) has the greatest art style which clearly stood the test of time!

Wow - Just found this channel. I was probably 5 years old seeing Warcraft 2 for the first time, and spent countless nights _(And school days)_ emulating Sam's style since WC3 was released. This is awesome. Thanks Sam.

When I was about 10 years old we rented warcraft 1 from the video store and I remember pouring through the manual looking at the artwork thinking it was the coolest art ever and I spent countless hours trying to learn how to draw characters like that. Fast fwd to today and Samwise is still teaching me new things, fuck yeah!

The point you talk about with the ENERGY in the original sketch hits so close to home. When working digitally I find myself going liking earlier iterations of my drawings because I think they have more punch. I find it hard to retain or recreate that energy in a polished piece

Thanks for the update Samwise. You have been one of my art heroes since I first played Warcraft 1 back in 1994! And when I first learned that you and Metzen were the main artists for it. The game captivated me as a kid. And I still have the Warcraft 1 manual as a prized possession, with all of the very cool art sketches of the units and buildings. And it still inspires me today. I have drawn pictures of your pictures (artwork) for other people lol. And I'm currently a hobbyist indie game developer as well, working on my own RTS game. Inspired by the original Warcraft RTS games of course. 😀 Blizzard will definitely not be the same without you. And any Blizzard project where you were not intimately involved was never quite as good, and that's an understatement. I wish you the best, and I hope you never stop creating. Even though I'm sad to hear you are retiring from Blizzard. I totally understand. Thank you!

I and many others liked your and Chris Metzen's black and white images on the manuals back then. It was simple but still detailed and not overloaded and it was also practical for printing without color. I especially liked it in warcraft 2 where it was used ingame in the menus and briefings on the parchment paper gave the feeling it was made there. Best regards A.K.D
