An interesting read. Understated, but powerful. I've discovered, after over a decade of independent research, that this poem was originally written by Mathew Franklin Whittier, the younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Mathew wrote it from real-life circumstances, some of which appear in the poem, itself. I think he originally named it after his wife, Abby Poyen, so that the poem would have been addressed to "Abigail P----". Poe changed the name to something more Southern, and re-wrote the last four lines. In the original, Mathew would have spoken of visitation dreams, not lying in the crypt. Mathew must have warned Poe that he would expose him if he ever dared publish it, which would explain why Poe never published it in his lifetime, despite Mathew having given him a copy in early 1842.

This wasn't signed when it was published in Household Words, and while Dickens may have inferred he wrote it, I don't think he did. I have found evidence that he plagiarized "A Christmas Carol" from an American couple named Mathew and Abby Whittier, and I suspect he did the same with this story.

His sons if anything were worse, the the secret treaty of Dover (1670) is sadly not widely known, as it was treason pure and simple. In this deal with Louis the XIV Charles II nd was to convert to Catholicism, declare absolutism and when the people rose a French army would come in and crush us. He chickened out when he realized how Protestant England had become. James the II nd was even worse, he greatly increased the size of the army to impose absolutism and Catholicism. This led to the Glorious Revolution, the reign of William and Mary and the legal establishment of constitutional monarchy. Oh and 'No Popery here.'
