DCC Concepts Cobalt Alpha Sniffer. Operation and fault finding

The Cobalt Alpha Sniffer is a component of the DCC Cobalt Alpha system. In This final video we look at the connection and operation of the DCC Concepts Cobalt Alpha Sniffer via an accessory bus. It deals with the problem of using this system with electrofrog points and tripping the sniffer. The solution as it turns out is quite simple

This was very informative. I have been using ANYRAIL since version 5.0 (now on 7.4.1) and there were a lot of things I had no idea the software could do - you just taught me a lot of that and I'm sure will continue to. I'm using Märklin C-track and it is good for that as well.
Great set of video's, thank you. Gary
Thanks
Great explanation, thank you.
Thanks Tinman, time is getting a problem but will be getting back into it in a bit
There is a new Modelling Messiah on TH-cam! This was pure gold! You answered simple questions in a concise manner. I have precisely your configuration and this footage was so easy to follow. DCC (God bless ‘em) make things so complicated in an effort to sell us more devices than necessary.
Thanks, but i just do my bit, have to agree about the DCC concepts though Cheers Al
Thanks, this covers the program very well. Do you know if it allows you to include the electrical diagrams (the circuitry) in the plans as well? For instance do they have icons for electrical components? Thanks.
Not particularly the closest they do is insulated connections and the like but not wiring diagrams per se, but you might be able to use the line function to add in on a another level
They should send you a free replacement. Not your fault it failed. They know its a problem, thats why the changed owners manual.
Yep but now as they are in the UK not AUS anymore it would cost the same to post it back as it was to buy a new one
My one is the same but wired up different that’s why it’s not working right shit have to fix thank you for the advice 👍
No problem
My one don’t do wot has ?have look at my one again thanks 👍
Liked your comment on part 2, so hope its all right now cheers Al
Fairly obvious really. The DCC accessory bus is strictly controlling the point motors only. Terminal 3 is changing with reference to terminals 1 and 2. If you have a separate DCC track bus then the frog needs to change with respect to that bus. You were essentially mixing 2 different DCC buses so I’m not surprised it didn’t work 😂
yep you got it in one, but would have been nice if DCC concepts had included a suitable description or wiring diagram at the time. This was several years ago and several others have commented on having the same problem with no solution... that's we all do this to help each other out Cheers Al
Excellent 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I've had a couple of the old Cobalt units stop switching. I pulled them apart to find the contacts on the wiper arm had, over time, "relaxed"! They weren't touching some of their adjacent pads. A bit of careful bending sorted that. While I was in there I used synthetic grease to re lube the gears and pinions. Do not use petroleum based greases. The fact is the synthetic stuff will rarely dry out. It rubs off long before that! Thanks for your vid.😊
Thanks for your comments Peter, It would be nice if there was some way of lubricating them without having to pull them apart, hadn't thought of the contacts, might have to revisit a couple of the dead ones,. Cheers Al
Thankyou for your handy to know vid. When I installed the DCc Concepts Alpha gear on our club layout, we used the power from our DCC Bus circuit to power the system, unlike you where you used an independant dc power supply. I had no problem using the frog wire to the frog terminal on the cobalt SM. I think that is the difference between the two power supply methods. Your solution was rather slick, nice! Idid not need the sniffer but I did need the Cobalt Box etc. More expensive than your option but it works magnificently. Dont worry tho, I had to do a bit of head scratching to get it play nice!
Yep that's how originally installed them via the dcc power bus, but was fiddly having to remember switch addresses (memory not as good as it used to be)etc to use through the dcc controller hence moved over to this system using the sniffer etc but thanks for your comments Al
Hi I followed everything you did. When I turn on everything I see the number 04 on the display and then turns off. I don’t see any light on the alpha switch panel. I figure there’s something wrong with the alpha switch? Thanks
the number that comes up on the display is that of the last switch operated, its normal for it to come on then disappear
Hello ! I’m watching your video on DCC Concepts Cobalt Alpha Sniffer Operation and Fault Finding. I wonder where the power on the Alpha Switch D is coming from ? Is it from the track or from wall adapter? I see that yellow and white wires connected to the sniffer is from the bus wire. I just want to know where the Cobalt Alpha Encoder and the Alpha Switch D are getting power. I see on the video it has black and red wires. Thanks
it is a wall adaptor 1 amp regulated

Hello Al thanks for your support always welcomed and great videos keep up the good work
Why Thank you sir Anthony, always like feedback, good and bad
My Sniffer unit has an issue. This morning it was red so I powered it off and on again. Unit came up with a pale blue, then flashing blue and now no light. I still have control of my switches via Alpha Central. Would appreciate your thoughts please.
Thanks Tony The main reason that the sniffer would turn red is if there is a wiring issue, like a short or something, the other main factor that would affcet a sniffer is if you are using a different power supply, (having fried a sniffer myself using the wrong power adapter it didnlt just turn red it smoked as well) that may be the wrong voltage or current... so check that and see if its still giving you the right amps and volts. From memory I believe the originally recommended a regulated power adapter, The fact you can still operate your points is interesting.... so you still have power. Where the points working when the red light was on? if everything else checks out then maybe its just the LED circuit?, otherwise I have no idea hope that helps Al
@@allynwoodmodelling Thanks for your reply. The issue has been solved by repairing a dry solder joint on the unit. Regards Tony
Great to hear @@tonystringer5452
Hi there, currently conversing with DCC Concepts about using the alpha switch system, they are stating that I need to purchase an alpha box to communicate with a Digitrax DCC controlled layout, the sniffer unit is a cheaper option, does this have to be on a separate bus or can it be connected to main track bus for it to operate.
It needs to run a seperate bus wire, and if your points are electrofrog then you will also need to run wires from your track power bus in order to give the electrofrog the correct power (so 5 wires per motor, 2 "dcc in" wires to control the point motor from your new sniffer bus, 2 wires from your track power bus to provide power for your frog, and the frog out wire to the electrofrog itself), but mine works well once i figured that out....... hope that helps Al
I've decided to purchase the alpha box as it saves putting in another bus, can you still operate the point motors using the digitrax controller?
I have no idea, @@paulrounding5260
That’s great thanks
no problem
Hi so if you change turnouts by dcs then the led would not show correct led route ?
I haven't watched the video for quite a while, but the whole idea of the system is to use it separate from your normal DCC power bus, if you are using your controller then you wouldn't be using this system-as they are two separate systems. and you cannot run both a power DCC bus and a Sniffer bus into the DCC in ports of the motor. You could possibly wire an LED into the board from your motor but you would havde to look at the motor wiring manual or seek advice from others as i have not had to do this. Hope that helps Al
Thanks
Nice summary and some useful tips, thanks
Thanks for the feedback, did you watch the whole series?
@@allynwoodmodelling I did indeed, appreciated.
Hi your video was great helped me solve the shorting-problem I cant seem to change the direction of the points using 197, Tried loads of times and just it just wont work, all I want to do is have all my points when on green they are all running straight and when on red the point is thrown, Hope you can help, Kind regards Chris
2 things i can think off. One after setting 197 then turning it to run are you turning the power off to the motor? and the only other option would be to remount the motor flipping it through 180 degrees so it mounts on the other side of the point to wich you have it now?
Great footage. That is a beaut. Well done to all involved.
Those blokes really know what they be doing down there
Thanks, i like the fact a lot of their scenery is empty, just like the real thing.
Great stuff you should have gone to the Whyalla model railway club rooms there layout there is a beauty along with the ones they take to the train shows like maree. That layout is a beauty especially when the coffee pot is running around. Oh well, I’m sure you’ll probably bump into them at Easter time for the big show. my brother and father are key members in the organization I guess trains just run in the family. Of course my videos are pretty hocus-pocus compared to your high production values. Great stuff keep it up
Nah I think yours show the sense of fun that you get out of it, I do too just have a little OCD problem!
@@allynwoodmodelling sense of fun is generally the same way I describe being broke. I choose the life of voluntarily simplicity.
Well, that’s truly disappointing. I have finally just finished installing 13 of these in my layout here in Queensland Australia in a dust free room that features regulated temperature and I must say I’m not excited about having to do this. In the next few years I think I’ll just buy a new point to tell you the truth. Very disappointing, but fantastic video a real treat to see what’s on the other side of the blue plastic. Great stuff.
for the $45 i sure agree.
How dissapointing. I just installed 13 new ones on a layout here in QLD dust free room regulated temp etc and I really don’t want to have to go through this anytime. Soon. Great video loved seeing what’s on the other side of that blue plastic?
Hi Josef see the comment reply on your other comment, keep up the enthusiasm hey?
@@allynwoodmodelling your right. I mean if one of mine failed I would simply just replace it and while it’s not that tricky to unhook it’s the frustrating part of reprogramming for default position. I have done it multiple times and I am halfway through editing a video regarding this yet still haven’t finished it because it seems like every time I do it I miss a step and I’m never sure if I’ve done it right how the simplicity I was so convinced that one company would come along with a nice RJ 11 or RJ 45 connection that we just plugged in and it was truly plugged in play i’m still waiting.
Hi very interesting I have solonoid Peco points do you know how I could use same setup as been told by dcc concepts not possible with solonoid points I too have a Digitrax dcs52 thanks hope you can help
to be honest, I wouldn't know unless you could somehow rig a decoder to the solenoid points? to take the digital address signal from the cobalt alpha encoder
They do a an accessory decoder but said it would use too much power so they said I would have to use a Alpha pier box and an Alpha box another £200 also said I couldn’t use their sniffer with my controller the same as yours confused.
I think you are missing a vital point here in that this system has nothing to do with your controller, so in a way they are right, as the sniffer uses separate bus wires (not the same ones as your controller.) to carry the digital system to your point motor (but it is a digital system so you need some way of decoding it at the point motor). If you have a DIGITAL accessory decoder attached to your solenoids then so long as you have enough power to operate it then i don't see why it wouldnt work. But for the cost and difficulty of worijng in accessory decoders you may just decide its not worth it and stick with your old system. For the cost of digital point motors I'd consider changing the solenoids out for digital motors of some kind. But that is a decision for you to make on how much you want to spend and how many you need. If all you want are LED indicators or switches then i know you could do that without the alpha system, but someone else would be better to show you how
Thanks the sniffer wires do they go to your separate accessary bus
yes
Thanks for the info.👍
No problem 👍
Very interesting I have about 50 on my layout and 36 are from 2012 and also live in Australia, would be a massive job to lubricate them all.
Yeah i think its the removing and reinstalling that would be the pain especially if its an N scale layout!, hard enough to fit them into HO scale points. Thanks for commenting
Many thanks for information…
Thanks for the feedback
Thanks for video, I have same setup as you, started to change points to electrofrog type and your solution is the answer I have been looking for. Many thanks
Glad it helped
Thanks for this series. As others have done, I binged on all 5 videos. There is good information for scratch builders as well as kit builders. I like the idea of the small bottle with the narrow delivery tube. A little like the Revell Contacta glue tube. 🙂

Hi Allynwood I have just got the ECOS ESU Command Station 50210 I set it up today and placed a Bachmann with a LoKSound 4.0 sound chip onboard onto the progam track set it up to read the decoder. I suddenly heard a crack like a matchstick snapping then smoke and that god awful smell of burning electronics I quickly removed it from the track worrying it was the controller I turned it off I rang Rails of Sheffield in the uk and they were helpful, they said the doubted it was the Loksound chip and more likely to be the controller they kept me waiting listening to the same incredibly boring message before coming back and telling me about the fact that they could not test it there as the only way to test the ECOS was with a DCC concepts sniffer. However, watching your interesting video I am not sure that the sniffer would be able to tell me if my controller had a problem, I don't suppose you would have any ideas would you. All the very best Adie In War and Peace
Hiya sorry for a late reply but been away for a holiday for 4 weeks, I doubt very much that the sniffer would be any use to you at all? as my understan ding is that it is similar to a command station in that it takes the information and sends it out via a bus line system, so i doubt very much that it reads abnything back the other way, and it is designed to be used in conjunction with the alpha encoders. So i think they are just probably mixed up in their information. I'm not familiar with the ECOS system so can;t really help you with how to check it. being ESU and the same ESU making the loksound i would doubt if there was an incompatibility in the electronics. It really sounds like there was too much voltage going through the chip, so my advice would be 1: Recheck the wiring and make sure it is all wired up correctly 2: Check the voltage of the output on the programming track and mainline track using a multimeter 2: have you run any other loco or chip using the new controller on the main line or programming line without an issue 3: Had the loksound decoder been used previously with your old controller. 4: check on youtube or other forums to see if there has been similar issues I did find something using the Ecos and sniffer from DCC concepts link here ( www.dccconcepts.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/ECoS-Command-Station-With-Alpha-Station-And-Sniffer.pdf ) but it looks like its taking signals from the alpha encoders into the ecos CSu via a sniffer (not the other way around) Hope this helps somewhat .... please let me know how you resolve this as its quite interesting, I presume the loksound 4 is now just a smoking pile of circuits Al
This Video has some good point and also a few not so good. If it took me 20 minutes to ballast about 4/5 inches of track I would never get it finished especially dropping glue between every sleeper.
Thanks Ken for your comment and feedback I agree and as this is an old video my method has changed, still basically the same, but I now use a micro dropper bottle, filled with the same scenic mix. I think the trick to speeding the process up is making sure the ballast is well sprayed prior to dropping on the scenic glue.. with the micro dropper bottle you can get a steady small stream which flows into the ballast well without flooding it, plus doesn't require re-filling as much. If you flood the ballast you run the risk of it flowing away from the track.. But I take your point on time (which is probably why a lot of people don't like ballasting!) You can get a ballast spreader which might make it quicker, its a plastic hopper which you load with ballast and it runs along the track, not expensive, probably worth a try. I hope this helps Cheers Al
Just finished "binge watching" your video series on Metcalfe kits - beautifully produced as well as comprehensive. I'm actually about to replace ALL my Hornby Skaledale buildings with Metcalfe kits, (with some trepidation), and your videos have boosted my confidence to make this leap ...
Well thanks, its great to know that they can help people, I make them because I enjoy doing it, and hopefully soon can get some time aside to do more. Again thanks for the feedback, and good luck with what sounds like a massive task!
Good stuff. And timely - I'm about to start carving a limestone quarry face! You make the point that rock faces are generally "ledged" from top to bottom. This is certainly true of sedimentary rocks (limestone and sandstone) which were originally formed in strata ("layers"), but less so of igneous rock that was formed from volcanic eruptions. (Is there ANY igneous rock in Australia?!) Hadn't occurred to me to use my Multitool (what you described as a plunge cutter), so thanks a lot for that! Just out of curiosity, do Aussies generally model your "native" railways, or British outline?
Thanks for the comment Roger I belong to the rockingham model railway group and I can tell you that they model everything, a lot of Australian, but a lot do North American, and its about the same for British, it seems to depend on the nationality of the modeller. Most people who do Australian are Australian and the rest seem to be mostly from Mother England (myself included). I think its also affected by the availability of rolling stock and scenery kits. Just a note on the multitool, the speed of the blade affects the finish of the cut, but as i think I said, give it a go and remember to have fun. I use a 25mm wide blade. And we have a bucket load of igneous rock, in fact probably more than any other rock type in any place I have ever been. The stepping is more relating to cut rock faces, working in the mining industry we always created benches in the open pits and any cut face was stepped backwards to ensure the risk of collapse was minimalised. I extrapolated this to where rock would have been cut to enable track laying and also based on existing examples around tunnel mouths, cuttings and quarries here in Western Australia. hope this helps cheers Al
Excellent job with this work-around. I myself emailed DCC Concepts and mentioned the exact same thing you did not want to hav e to rely on you handheld Cab to throw the points. Thumbing through the menu and figuring out what address to enter was I felt a big time sink. I was told that that idea would not work and I would have to purchase the Alpha Box and Alpha Power Adapter along with a couple other miscellaneous items. That was a big cash outlay I was not looking to do. Love your approach, so simple and direct. Allows me to purchase other great DCC Concepts products with the savings. Great tip on that RK12 connector to be aware of. Thanks!
You are more than welcome, (and glad you could save some money, it is a very expensive hobby at times and I have a limited funding budget so try to keep things simple... and my wife happy) DCC concepts make great products, and when i made these videos they were still based just down the road. Always found them helpful. Again thanks
Great video. Really enjoyed it.thanks.
Glad to hear it!
Another WA modeller , hi there, very interesting video, I have about 30 analogue motors with electrofrog points and panel but not digital. I have the frog powered from the track and new some systems recommended a separate power bus for frogs? I am just about to start the last section with a bout 12 points and was considering the IP digital. Cheers
Thanks for your comment, you can run the IP digital without a separate bus, i changed mine more to do with my controller than the wiring of the frog, using the DCC power bus is easier, and I believe you should be able to wire it up the same as your analogue motors, but then again I haven't tried. Your layout loosd pretty well completed and looking well detailed too Cheers Al
@@allynwoodmodelling Cheers much appreciated
Great video May I ask what DCC system are you using to control your layout I am up to installing my IP motor's So it was great to come across your video thanks again Chris
I use a digitrax controller, but the rest of the system is DCC Concepts, usually their "cobalt " tagged components
Thanks, wow these kits get expensive for you! I enjoy these kits and always looking for ways to improve. I like the idea of the matt varnish as they can be a little shiny from some angles. Cheers
Thanks for the feedback, I prefer the Metcalfe i think the quality is great
at 17.00 hes creating a nice soundbridge to the wooden underlay. this is NOT the way to do it :)
Thanks, I thin k we each have our own preferred method of ballasting, this one is how I do it and find it works for me... others maybe not..... I find that the ballast only on the foam doesn't increase noise.
Hi Al. Some nice tips in this video 👍.
Thanks 👍
The flat cable to the sniffer has the RJ12 plug inverted in relation to the RJ12 plug from the decoder, could you show both RJ12s side by side to show any pinout differences in the wiring
can't in the comments section, if you wish to email us then I can reply with a photo for you, or alternatively the wiring colours from left to right with the tab facing downwards are white, black, red, green, yellow, blue. If you lined up the other end parallel with the tab downwards, and both ends facing away from you the colour order is the same. ie both ends look identical if the tabs are in the same position facing the same way, however this means the cable is actually twisted 180 degrees horizontally (easier to explain with a photo) Al
