@@johnmfl61 hello, I had an issue with my signal generator, but will be posting soon, thank you for your patience.
Interesting video, thank you; the 51X is a classic; Thank you for featuring it.
Fun movie with great cast. Louise Brooks is certainly not your typical girl next store. She's mis-cast but it's great to see her. She tells off the blow hard Aubrey (calls him a four-flusher!?!), and he's repentant and saves the day. Fun times.
Had one about 50 years ago. Someone had removed the audio stage and the crystal filter. I installed a generic IF can and hooked up a q multiplier. Also built a basic audio output stage. Very nice $15 receiver!
@@JoeBob1955 it’s unfortunate, most receivers that I come across have been chopped or butchered to some degree. Nice to hear you got it working!
Sounds great!
hi it would be cool t that you make , audio push-pull with 807 tubes or 6l6 or other tubes.thanks
I'm thinking of building tube using tube #42 in push-pull, output and 6C6 as driver It sounds very warm and capable of 15W easy. Thanks!

I hope to get my nc183d up and running this winter
I’m overwhelmed with the amazing quality of your work. I just picked up (barely; what a boat anchor!) one of these at the Stone Mountain HAMfest last weekend. I only paid $120 for it and the speaker, so I’m pretty happy. It’s somewhat functional, but I really want it restored to this level. May I ask, what are the two screws adjacent to the power cord?
Hello and thank you for you nice comment, with practice and with plenty of patience you too can restore your receiver like this one. I recommend, downloading the manual, then watch several videos for tips and ideas. Practice soldering if its been a while, and most importantly take lots and lots of pictures before you start removing components, sometimes you will forget where things go! As long as you have the schematic you should be fine. Oh and those two screws are used with a transmitter, its sort of a "disable receive" when you key up your transmitter. Thank you and good luck on your receiver!
@ , actually, I’m colorblind so working electrical is precarious at best 😬. But I have an excellent tech a couple of hours from me.
Far more interesting for a fan of silent film is watching Ford Sterling. Let the Louise Brooks cult (yes it's a political/feminist thing and not just her beauty or acting) chatter on, the rest of us find interesting watching the grad of Keystone comedy do more substantial work. No goatee or mugging for the camera as was his trademark in the prior decade.
E così bellissimo ❤
Yeah, this isn't the correct movie, this is "Storm over Asia" by Vsevolod Pudovkin from 1928.
That's a very nice addition to a beautiful vintage radio. Great work! The product detector makes a vast improvement in audio quality.
@@MikeinSoCal thank you, the product detector really makes a huge improvement in SSB mode. I can’t believe I have not used this before.
AVC should be on for AM mode. Then the S meter will work, too.
Lo necesito en español 😅 te quiero mucho Louise Brooks ❤
Is there a way to obtain a schematic
@@lambrosratchis3062 hello, I think I have something in the shop, let me look and I’ll get back to you soon, thanks
Your work is impeccable. That radio is the cleanest wired receiver ive ever seen. I make my wiring neat but this is different
@@mp-ov9dh thank you so much.
43:26 Broad Street Station, razed in 1953.
*I really enjoyed it!* I came for Louise Brooks and got impressed by Ford Sterling's perfomance. He had a long career and among many roles he played the Keystone Cops' Police Chief.
Yes, he really did a great job in this film, quite funny!
They could have used Durium. It cannot rust…
A thoroughly enjoyable film, despite its great age. The facial expressions are completely modern and belie the film's being almost 100 years old. The obnoxious braying of Ford's character is worth viewing by itself. I still wonder how a blowhard like him could capture lovely Lois Wilson's heart!
Yeah, she was the only one fooled by his hooey, but he came through in the end and all's well.
I liked this film better than Brooks' Pandora's Box! Englemann's character is deliciously malevolent, and Pawlova's raises more than a few eyebrows in this film, which is way ahead of its time in many ways. Brooks is again as beautiful as ever.
Man, you do nice work! I assume you’ve got that plugged into the NBFM accessory socket?
Thank you, Yes i do, I'm putting together a how to video on the product detector, I'm sure man folks can use this setup also, thanks again!
That’s really cool
I’ll be posting a quick video on how to build for your boat ancho receiver.
@@thevintageaudiolife that’s amazing man, all your gear looks in incredible shape. I haven’t looked at your other vids yet but I will
COOL Beans!
I'll be posting a video on how I got this to work.
Such a bright and clear picture. It seems that so many early films are faded and muddy
Fabulous!!!!
I have a 1127 on my sequoia but I can't find that connector
The connector is there, maybe under the carpet, or maybe they ran the cable/wires along another path. Might want to check the wiring diagram for the year/model. Good luck hope u find it.
Entertaining......funny......love Louise Brooks....
Such a shame about Gregory Kelly..he seemed very talented.
Gregory Kelly, the brother, was already ill when he made this movie & died a year later. He was married to Ruth Gordon & made just 2 films. Ford Sterling is a real hoot playing this super annoying character---he was mainly known as the Police Chief of the Keystone Cops.
Credit the naturalism of the acting to director Malcolm St. Clair. Miss Brooks disgraced herself when she described St. Clair as an incompetent and drunk. A pity.
The Narcissist would have been a more accurate title.
Took me 8 hours a day for three hours and I was using a Hakko de-soldering tool. (NC-173) You’re fast. Mine was a wreck though. I had to re-wire tons of stuff along the way. I plan on adding that product detector mod you speak of. Right now I’m adding a crystal calibrator which required adding the second octal jack on back. Mine is an early -173 and didn’t have one. I’m using push/pull on/off pits on the volume and tone to control the calibrator. It’s a National XCU-27. I’m not sure about your carbon resistors, but some of mine were double the marked resistance. Love how you used those very nice Vishay resistors.
All 80% of the carbons were double like you said. Funny that your bring up product detector, yesterday i just finished building one using a 6j6 tube that plugs into the accessory socket. Looks clean, i used some old metal relay enclosure, actually looks as if it came from the factory. I'll make a video soon, I have a National HRO-50 that i need to bring up to working condition, considering painting it since its rusty, besides i hate that gray color National uses. So look out for that video i should post soon! and thanks for your interest and comments!
Thanks for sharing; and what a superb print....
Where's the footsie scene under the dinner table?
Wow. Nicely done. Are those new brown Vishay precision resistors? Also, the mod you were describing as a product detector appeared to have two relays on top? Were they, or something else?
Hello, yes they are Vishay resisters. The relays are something else, i think it this receiver was used with a transmitter, looks like high voltage was cut off the receiver when transmitter kicked on. At the end i removed the product, i found a neat schematic for a modern product detector, but was too lazy to wire it on, thanks for watching!
Remade with Spencer Tracy and again with red Skelton and Marilyn Maxwell. I haven’t seen this version. (Original?)
So i found one of these in my garage today... plugged in a headset, and the antenna amplification seemed to have some effect on the sound output but it wasn't picking up anything; where to start...?
Hello, the receiver dates back to the 1940's, so with time they will develop corrosion on the switches and contacts. Before you plug it in, i recommend you use some contact cleaner and spray all switches and contacts. Also, most likely you will have a few faulty resistors or capacitors, thus the receiver might not work. Most importantly you will have the original wax yellow capacitors, those defiantly need to be replaced. they leak current and will degrade the receiver and sometimes will tend to short out and become resistors rather than capacitors. I would not use it until you replace all those yellow waxy capacitors, or you might damage the power supply. The one you see in this video, i replaced all components.
Good job, what is the name of product you use to achieve a result like this?
I used rust removal type solution, it was not harsh on the components nor on the cloth wires at all. Then I used aluminum polish. Thanks for watching.
Love Louise Brooks! And it's fun to see the silent version of a film better known through its sound remakes.
I'd like to hear this tube amp sound.
Thanks for the comment, give me a few days, i'll post a quick video on how it sounds and do little more on the inner workings and share a schematic.
@@thevintageaudiolife thanks for your respond. I hope the audio input source from vinyl player instead of using mp3 player.
@@pepsodentpasta as a matter of fact, i have been wanting to make a video of my home build Marantz M7. I've been using it for years. I paired it with a Garrad that i rewired the tone arm with new silver wire. I'll post and play! thanks!
Who can help me build one of these?
Hello, I will upload another video, hopefully this can guide you to information on how to build this amp. Thank you
The way you did it is very neat 😊
Thank you.
Was Louise Brooks ever NOT one of the most beautiful women on screen? She's almost luminous here, especially next to most of the other players. There's also a great inside joke involving the car. When Sterling calls his wife, he says his Uncle George Stitch left him the shares. Sterling's real name was George Ford Stitch! Thanks for the upload.
Nice film ❤
Здравствуйте 😊😊 Интересная у вас конечно конструкция 😊😊 Я такую раньше не видел. Я ✍️ Ся,вы?
Of course, Louise Brooks was the star of this movie but do not forget the inimitable Fritz Rasp as Meinert. He also appeared in Fritz Lang´s Metropolis as "Der Schmale".
Yes! thats correct, He portrayed the mysterious "Der Schmale" ("The Thin Man") in Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927)
Can we hear it?
Hello, yes I’m working on a next video, I’ll be taking it out with a few friends and do some testing.
I build amps too and I find that 12AU7 does give you lower volume and less gain but it loses something tone wise. Also, a deluxe has two channels so you have a volume for each and a shared tone. The two channels are interactive so you use the two channels in conjunction because the volumes affect the volume tone and gain of one channel even though you are plugged in the other. You can even jumper the channels to get more crunch. It is a unique design that you basically tweak all three knobs and get a nice rhythm tone, to clean up you turn the guitar volume knob down, to get lead tone use an overdrive.
Your absolutely correct in terms of tone, when I swapped to a 12AU7 I noticed it loses “something” in tone.
You can try to bias the 12ax7 to pass less volume it works but I never tried it on a 5E3. What you do is increase the size of the cathode resistor and if you have a bypass cap you can remove that . Another tweak you can use is to change the size of the coupling capacitors. A larger size allows more bass to pass through and a smaller size only allows the treble to pass.
I have never built a kid I buy old vintage tube equipment like reel to reel tape recorders or record player amplifiers PA amplifiers and I modify them to guitar use that's the cheapest way to me. That way you may only have to remove or change a few components like filter caps and change the input
