My new KTM 1290 SAS had a fault KTM couldn't diagnose . With the help on online pressure and persistence from myself( Thanks to Ricardo Yeep ) its being resolved.

    Enjoyed my super duke Even with a few of these problems Saltire who were local were always on top of it Now if I need help the nearest dealer is 100 plus miles away Will be trading in for another make At a local dealer I think

    Sh*t happens and stuff breaks, but KTM's claimed ignorance and perceived "give a sh*t" is telling. I currently ride a 1090R that I bought new in 19' ... had the usual fuel pump problems and an assembly issue where they did not seal the stator wire grommet. KTM rep is obviously there to save money for mother KTM vs taking care of the customer, as the shop was trying to do. Yeah, I eventually got those issues taken care of and it's been a relatively flawless bike since, but that first month was hell after dropping 15k ... question is would I buy another KTM? ... probably not given that the 790's and 890's aren't proving to be any more reliable.... and they won't improve until we stop buying them.

    My 2018 SAR went dead last autumn with MTC Failure and refused to start reliably after that. Stored it through the winter at the very KTM dealership/workshop that have taken all services since new, and they now can’t get it running reliably. First they found a ground fault, I fetched it and rode it to work after a gleeful few hours first spring ride. Then deliberately let it stand for 24 hours to see if the brand new OEM Yuasa YTZ14S battery was up to it. Going off work after that night shift it refuses to start and voltage drops below 12v down to 9,4v during cranking - still not starting 😮 KTM workshop have now scratched their heads for two weeks without concluding. And it’s their best and most skillful mechanics on the job.

      It went flawless for five years before this sudden debacle. Now I’ve bought a Lithium battery they tested without success, and today the new stator and Kokusan crankshaft position sensor I ordered were delivered to the workshop. If these replacements can’t provide a reliable bike we’re talking harness and/or CPU/EPU failure or another unfound ground fault etc.

    My experience with KTM Super Adventure S 2022 with a misfire issue (bike has now around 5000KM, but happened from day 1): 1. First service intervention was to adjust the fueling mapping and check the ignition pickup gap (I hope I'm not misspelling)=> NO result 2. Second intervention was to replace the flywheel => NO Result 3. Third intervention, ignition sensor was replaced => NO Result 4. Fourth intervention, flywheel replaced again => The issue seem to be fixed (only ridden the bike for 300 KMs so not 100% sure it was fixed). If you are unlucky you can get a new flywheel (with the new part code) that has the same issue like the one you just replaced. The service has to check very carefully the flywheel for imperfection. On top of this misfire issue I had the following other issue: A. lots of electronic issues which keep appearing and disappearing ( MTC issue, Suspension fault, bluetooth disconnection) B. Wobbling at both low and high speed (both with/without topcase and suspension adjusted) C. Mirrors have started to rattle inside their cases (after 2000 KMs) D. Bike pulls very hard to the right no matter how straight the road is E. Left handle grip has started rotating . It feels like I have two throttle handles F. After so many service interventions the bike has started to vibrate harder and it resonates very bad between 3000 and 5000 RPM. After this experience and KTM support interaction I will most probably not buy any bike from them. The bike has stayed in service for almost one full year, KTM didn't respond any of my emails, they are not willing to extend the warranty, nor the seller or KTM was willing to replace the bike (even if I proposed to support the money difference) although the bike had less than 2000KMs, already 3 interventions and they didn't know how to fix it. Any bike can have issues no matter the manufacturer, but when the support is also utter shit, then it's a recipe for disaster. On top of the money I lost buying this bike (yes LOST, I feel like I was scammed) I lost also money on planned vacations which I had to cancel because the bike was still in service, on insurance costs (using the bike or not it doesn't matter for the insurance company). Sorry for the long post, but I really feel frustrated as purchasing the bike was a financial effort for me and it turned out to be a hellish experience instead of a joyful one. Also noticed that Ricardo_Yeep removed the video about the issue (don't know the reason).

    KTM hasn’t been as reliable as one could hope. Soo many issues, many get ignored by KTM. I would rather go BMW as they stand behind their products better.

    I have a 2023 SAS and it wouldn't start within the first 260 miles on the odometer. These things are finicky. Back to the shop and they said they couldn't figure out why. The battery drained itself when the bike was off and in storage only 4 days.

    These electrical issues are (mostly) resolved with 2 simple steps. 1) Battery change or riding it frequently, and 2) always wait for the dash animations to finish before starting the engine. It's running diagnostics while the animation is showing. Interrupting it seems to make it throw out non-existent error codes.

    KTM doesn’t care about what they’re putting out for the consumer to buy. That’s evident by them only giving a two year warranty on their crap from the factory bikes.

    Hi Jason, My 2021 SAS did the same thing to me a couple of days ago (8500km). But mine after several attempts to start stayed running. went up the road and the preload warning came up. restarted and it went away. no problems since. I believe my battery is starting to fail, 1290's seem to be very picky about battery voltage under crank. From the comments here and other posts, a new lithium battery seems to be the answer. They are a volt or so higher than a lead acid battery and have more crank amps available. I will purchase one next week. Otherwise what a fantastic bike, still love it.

    Jason, that a bummer and a good response from KTM. Please keep us informed on how the new bike acts. I own a 2018 KTM Super Adventure S. I bought is used (one year old) I initially had the common fuel pump issue. broke down the day I road it away for the dealer. Since then no issues except cold starting, but I think it's the lithium battery. Eric, Black Swan Odysseys

      I just hit 10 k yesterday. Bikes good. Bit of low speed wobble when my hands are off the bars but I’d think the headstock needs torquing. Common enough i think and easy fix 🤞

      @@blackswanodysseys it’s a common fault from factory on this model . Doesn’t effect handling when riding normal of fast . Not tyre pressure unfortunately .

    I am going through an electrical issues with mine as well, ktm knows about it. My super adventure 2020 model, same as your in the video left me stranded a month ago. The elock mechanism got stocked. Thanks for me it was a month prior my warranty expires and the dealer is now working on it. My question is why a brand new bike would do this when the intended purpose was to go out ride it in all types of weather and adversities? Ktm should recall this model and work on fixing it before more people realize their bikes are time bombs. If someone from ktm corporate read this, please don’t ignore it.     I'm sorry you have had this issue i have heard about KTM as I was going to buy one myself and was told their warranty doesn't cover electrics lol 😆 I bought the Africa Twin DCT 🌍 wow I'm delighted, good luck pal

      Yes. Got bk in February. 10 k on the clock now . I reckon I got 20k done on the 3 SAS’s . Amazing bike.

      @@jasonsearle2512 This is perhaps one of my biggest fears of Radar Cruise and the heavy electronics in modern bikes. If you didnt stay calm, it would have ended babdly. Bravo. Probably going to steer clear of the tech on my next bike though.

    The headlight on my 7k mile 2018 failed; random headlight unit failure errors. A new unit from KTM costs $1k (which is absurd). I was able to find a new one on eBay for $400. An old school headlight costs $25 and does the exact same thing.

      No. It was a scratch on the flywheel the crank sensor was picking up. All models with this issue are being fixed by KTM by installing a new flywheel.

    The problem I have is when I give it gas sometimes... the bike jerks unexpectedly and even scares me, because you don't expect such a sudden reaction🤔🤔🤔

    I bought a 2021 ktm1290 super adventure s had same problems as you they offered me a new 2022 model which I've had got the same problem on this one and it's worse than the last one they changed me £2000 pounds to change to the new one can't believe what they done for you I hope you got more luck with your new bike

      Oh my god!! Why did you have to pay £2000! That’s not on. I did make sure my bike was built in 2022 . They know how to fix it now. It’s a scratch on the flywheel that the sensor is picking up. I think a High grit sandpaper and a light rub of the scratch on the flywheel fixes it. I would be looking for my £2k back. I put up over 6k on the clock on my 2021 bike. They gave life time free services and free tech pack.

      @@philipwilliams3261 get in touch with KTM yourself or try a different dealer maybe. The fault is well known at this stage and easily fixed.Demand the 2k back also. Use my name and my dealers name as a reference to previous resolutions to the same issue. It’s down to your dealership not KTM (in my opinion)that’s letting this coat you. Sorry I feel so angry they have put you through this and asked you to pay 2k for the privilege. Sorry for ranting but it’s just not right.

    Hy guys!! I’m from Canada and look to have the same problem… ☠️ Just got it past week 180 km on the odometer!! I owned a 2018 SAS without no issue!! Just so you know I’m very mad about this situation. I call my dealer and he didn’t here nothing about that problem ☹️😭 I hope Ktm will make a recall service to solve the problem.

      Sorry to hear this. KTM are well aware of it now. I will make a new video explaining but basically it’s a fault with the fly wheel. The tooling that made them left a scratch on the surface of the fly wheel that the sensor picks up and makes the bike panic and misfire. You can get in touch with my dealership if you want. They will explain.

    good to see you finally got sorted, weird how you say the super duke r is not a commuter bike ! currently im on a 2021 and that will be getting px for a 22 later in the year iv had super dukes since the 990 in 2012 and have had the beast 1.0 and 2.0 and i have used it has a commuter to the tune of 25k a year 12 months a year ! excellent commuter bike but we all have our oreferences.

      Each to their own. I loved the Duke! Amazing bike. but in the winter as it was with low temperatures and rain . The Super Adventure was a lot more comfortable and enjoyable.

    This reminds me of my issues with my Triumph Speed Tripple. They kept trying and trying and every week the fault returned and left me stranded. It got to the point I was afraid to ride the bike. It took so long for them to replace the harness that a custom one had to be made as they the model update meant the factory wasn't making the old one. It is not fun having problems like this

    Hi Jason I'm Armando Pedregosa of the Philippines. I have also 2021 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S my problem is the fork.Since the first day when I take out the bike from the dealer I've already notice something unusual with the fork ,/the dealer told me just to observe but after 5 mos the problem getting worser so I let the dealer overhaul the fork and it was found out that the plastic parts inside was broken.What they did they charged it to warranty.My problem now is the delay of the parts, it is already more than 2mos now and the replacement part has not yet arrive,they keep on promising that its coming.So, since we the same problem what did you did dealing with your problem?

      Hi Armando. beautiful part of the world . sorry to hear of your problem. Waiting for parts, Its an issue the world over due to covid. what I would ask for is some kind of compensation for the time you have no bike, like some luggage or crash bars, software upgrades ect. I hope they have given you a bike to use in the meen time. Hope all works out. very frustrating .

    KTM are VERY susceptible to low battery, check the battery voltage anything under 12V is flat battery (mine shows 12.8V). What you are seeing is classic flat battery symptom. If you don't ride it every day please put a battery tender on the bike and plug it in when you garage it- Optimate FTW.

    I remember telling my KTM dealer that the seat slips off the tank on high setting- they shrugged their shoulders. I remember telling my KTM dealer that the screen had rebooted twice (within 5K miles) whilst the bike was running (once I had the ACC engaged on the motorway when it cut so that was an interesting moment)- they shrugged their shoulders. So I'm really glad you got resolution bud. If you find a good dealer, support them, because they are a dying species.

    My 2022 KTM 1290 super ADS only has 18 kilometres and is not starting. Future reliability looks shit. Since it is Sunday I will contact dealer and see what he will say. They can come pick it up, if not I will dump it in front of the shop. I just spent 19.000 euros for a not working product 😡

    Hi Jason, heard anything from KTM about the stutter problem? I think this is maybe why they call the model an Adventure ... it has nothing to do with crossing the Serengeti but every time you go to overtake a milk float the bike decides to cut out and leave you coasting in the middle of the road ... it turns every overtake manoeuvre into a true Adventure. As they say, the fun is in the journey. I bought a new one last April and yes its got the stutter. As always with KTM I have learned to live with it and at 72 I guess hitting the truck head on ( like Jax Teller in SofA ) while trying to overtake the milk float is preferable to wasting away with cancer. This is my 6th KTM and I go back to 2009 with 990 Adventures , SMTs , 1190s, 1290 and now the 2021 model. If the Ready to Race isn't enough to incite imminent death the series of snatchy throttles, electronic gremlins and now the sneeze, cough and stutter of the new one will always keep you on your toes. I have done 6000 miles on mine so far and I will mention the stutter to my friends at Premier Bikes at Oxford when I see them next.

    hey, I had exactly the same problem .... the engine was squealing when accelerating ... I drove the bike 300km when I returned it to the salon ... they did not find a fault and gave me a new engine because I did not let the engine break and repair ... because 20000eur bike ... is not for repairs .... well now I have 10000km on the new one and it works as it should ... everything is ok, fortunately ....
