Tragedy and Purpose: Year of the Dog | The Common Hatred
Why do you get out of bed in the morning? Is there such a thing as a "bad reason?"
The 2007 film Year of the Dog takes a refreshing and uniquely uncritical look at what one person feels compelled to do when an unexpected tragedy reveals the hollowness of what remains of their life. What is its depiction of grief trying to get across?
My beloved bird, my bud, my boy, my best and oldest friend, unfortunately passed away in my hands at 0300 on the morning of the third of December 2021. It feels appropriate that when I finally made this essay, it was when he only had a few months left with me. Normally I go back and rewatch my old work on occasion, as part of the process of making future essays, but this is not one I can return to, and I may now never again rewatch it. The grief is unceasing, and I miss him every day. Cherish your pets. I hope he thought well of me.

I take exception to what you said at 42:45, "Obviously the most honest and real version of you is the version that only you actually know about." I think that is quite false. People rarely, truly know their own mind and motivations. This fact is part of why the profession of sociologist exists after all. I recall reading that it has been found that it is your close friends who understand you best, often better than you understand yourself... Just something to think about.

Wasted 1 hour of my life to confirm what I already knew... you are wrong, this movie is trash, and its still a shameless american remake of the 1972 masterpiece that is Tarkovsky´s Solaris. You americans are such simple minded people, you need a boring melodramatic magic-less bastardisation of one the best pieces of art to start understading its profound themes.

Solaris is one of the very few movies I rated a 10 on IMDB. I saw it without having seen the Russian film, read the book, or even seen the trailer. I loved the novelty of an entity that is too advanced to understand, yet was not threatening. And unlike a Lovecraftian antagonist, this creature -- removed from humanity -- was by nature seeking to build a bridge to relate to humans. The only ones who were threatened by the entity were those who chose to equate strangeness with evil. At 60 I may be older than most who liked this movie, but after a lifetime of watching aliens attack earth, it was a breath of fresh air to discover an idea that was actually new. Your eloquent analysis of this film was time well spent by this viewer. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

I've read somewhere that Rheya is unable to have children. Some kind of medical condition where the baby would be stillborn and, additionally, a good chance of harming Rheya herself. So the argument between Rheya and Chris is one of those tragic “Romeo and Juliet” type of miscommunications. She is trying to tell Chris she WANTS to have the baby, but CAN’T. But she's not able to articulate this due to the heated nature of their exchange. Including the fact that Chris keeps interrupting her. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Having watched the original 1972 version as well as the 1979 movie Stalker, I noticed that both films had the exact same theme - humans encounter an alien entity and the reactions of that entity are based entirely on what type of person the human is. Good people are given the reward of love (the one thing that has universal value,) and the bad people are either attacked or vanish never to be seen again. These aliens are neither good or bad, their reaction is a pure logical reflex action with no human agenda. On a side tangent: I love that in Stalker, "the zone" gave the main character a dog, dog people will get it.

Have always loved this film-so much is left unsaid but becomes known through the apprehension of experiencing it, just as Love allows. I always felt Solaris itself was an organic being or entity searching for a pathway to communicate and self-evolve. Really Excellent Presentation-Thank you so much.

As a not overly religious person, I still really enjoy this movie. Thing I learned from it as a kid is: You have two choices when shit happens. You can hold and grudge and be bitter and alone for the rest of your life. Or You can forgive someone for what they did/apologize for what you did, and make the concerted effort to be better for yourself and everyone around you. If God exists, it is clear which he favours.

I don't intend on rewatching it because I don't want to fuel feelings of depression. This movie isn't happy regardless of the "best option ending considering the options". I need some laughs.

What if memories are enough to create a person? Who can judge what deserves to live? Is Kris way of giving in and fully accepting the current copy of Rhea delusional or is it rational? Is Gordons way of dehumanizing the visitors rational, legit or ignorrance? Is Snow confronted by a version of himself because he is a loner and Solaris brings up what your mind is centered around? Is the copy of Snow less worthy then the original trying to kill it? What they all got in common is how stressfull these encounters are for them, full of regret, shame, fear, desire and yearning. Brilliant psychological thriller. I love the book and both movies.

Love isn’t computable or logical. It is powerful, healing and transformational. Solaris is one of my most favorite and cherished movies of all time. The idea that Solaris doesn’t want anything from its visitor is incorrect. Solaris is pure consciousness and when it connects with the consciousness of the humans that are visiting it, it connects to their memories and their experiences. It wants to offer all its visitors a chance to heal the pain they have experienced at the loss of a loved one. Every visitor on that ship is someone that was once loved by a crew member and then lost by them. We have to ask ourselves why does Solaris choose to send visitors that have died? We have to ask ourselves why does Solaris choose to send visitors that were clearly loved and cherished by the crew members? It’s because Solaris wants to return to them the love that they have lost. Analyzing Solaris in a purely logical way is insufficient. Solaris isn’t just creating reflections from the memories of the humans on board that station. It is giving them an opportunity to connect with the loved once again and say what they couldn’t say before and do what they couldn’t do before and heal and and complete what they couldn’t complete before while the ones that passed away existed on Earth. Solaris understand love perfectly perhaps even more than humans ever could. Otherwise why would you choose to send visitors that were love so deeply by the crewmembers. This movie is not about memory, it’s not about how we remember people and how our memory gets distorted over time. This movie is about love. We love people who have died, we love people who haven’t even been born yet and feel connected to them. We love people who are thousands of miles away and people we haven’t spoken to in several years. Love is something that transcends the barriers of space and time. Love is of a higher dimension that isn’t bound by the limitations of human existence, human logic, and human memories. People don’t just live on in the memories of people’s mind after they die. The love between them despite death lives on. Because as the poet Says in the movie, death shall have no dominion over love. Solaris seems like a very advanced form of consciousness. It is able to create beings that seem absolutely real, and not only that, these beings are so strong that they can rip open metal doors on a ship. They can regenerate themselves. Solaris doesn’t seem like a being that exists without purpose or acts without intent. The fact that such an advanced being as Solaris chooses to re-create beings that were once loved deeply by the crew members is evidence that love is some thing far more advanced than comprehensible by the logical human mind. Solaris gives precedence to love. Solaris wants to give all of the humans visiting it a chance to experience love again with the ones they have loved and lost. Solaris wants them to heal. If the humans remember their loved ones in a distorted way then the visitors Created by Solaris act in a distorted way. Solaris can only create these beings these visitors Out of the memories of the minds on board. It only has access to the minds on board for the information required to create these beings. That is why some of these beings are distorted and suicidal. But that is not what Solaris intends. It simply does not have the information to create a being that would behave otherwise. Undoubtedly, Solaris has the intention of offering the humans on board the station a chance to heal the pain they have experienced with their loved ones. This movie is about love, about having once more a chance to love and heal what has been lost. Trying to understand this movie with human logic is a disservice to it. Being such a Solaris is far more advanced a consciousness than humans. We should learn from it and realize that love isn’t something that we invented in our brains. Love isn’t a chemical reaction. Love is a force so powerful that It can transcend all human and alien barriers to connect two Alien Species such as humans and Solaris in a common thread. In the end it is the experience of love that connects Solaris and humans. Thank you.
