Something i realized from this scene is that here he didn't hug lena back. Not seeming to understand what she was going. But at the end of the film, he was the one to hug her. I think this shows either he was deteriorating before she embraced him. In the mind, perhaps more than the body. Something this makes me think that this could just as well actually be kane rather than the copy. The copy was the one to blow himself up rather than kane. The way he's acting in this scene is because he was mentally falling apart rather than trying to learn. This isn't an argument that this is actually the original, but rather pointing out that we won't be able to know. But whats really matters is that the kane we have cares about lena, and lena seems to have found a sense of piece she's been looking for for a long time with him.

The closeup at 0:38 is one of my favorites because they framed it to show all of her emotions, even the physical neck muscles tensing up

While this is is sci-fi this is really an allegory of a soldier who deployed and all the trauma that comes from him coming home from overseas because we ain’t really the same. Something changes we ain’t the same and one year apart is a lot of change when you aren’t around someone you love.

When he takes that sip of water and puts it down and says "I don't feel well" you're lead to think he hasn't been feeling well for a while. But I think he responded immediately to the effects of drinking the water, almost like a robot. All of his responses were so cleverly written, as if you can perceive them in two ways.

I love how in every shot, Kane's hand is distorted by the refraction of the light passing through the glass of water. It's a subtle reference to the fact that he's actually from the shimmer, the thing that refracts everything.

The fact that this wasn't him, and knowing this watching it again I feel the alien isn't being quiet rather. It doesn't know any of this that she's asking its doing the last thing Kane asked her. I think it really shows when "he" shows no emotion and the fact that he awsner all of her questions truthfully. I imagine when he says "I recognized you" it's because the mimic saw a picture of her as it's implied he spent more time with it. I'd assume asking questions.
