Healthy Home Guide
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 18 ธ.ค. 2022
Hi, I’m Alex. I believe that everyone deserves to live in a home with fresh, clean air. Even renters, or those without ducted HVAC systems. I share practical, budget-friendly (yet effective) tips for creating a safe and healthy home, whether the word "home" refers to your house or your body.
My life path has pushed me to learn about many topics, from building science and indoor air quality to personal growth and healing. I have an innate tendency to meticulously test strategies for improving my quality of life, and have had to do so mostly out of necessity.
What qualifies me to speak about indoor air quality and building science?
1.) I myself have been severely chronically ill from toxic mold exposure. It's become my mission to help ensure that what happened to me does not happen to others.
2.) I'm a translational scientist in the medical field. That means that it's my job to translate science into practice. Every day I read research studies and interpret their implications.

Household VOCs Are Polluting the Air: Here’s How to Protect Your Health
Are you aware that household products like air fresheners, cleaners, and paints are now a major source of air pollution in cities? In this video, I dive into how volatile chemical products (VCPs) contribute to outdoor pollution, surpassing even cars and factories in many industrialized areas. These products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which escape from our homes and react with pollutants, forming harmful particles and ground-level ozone.
Join me as I explain how these everyday items affect air quality and share practical tips to reduce your exposure to VOCs. From replacing scented products to using a dedicated fresh air intake system like an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), learn how you can protect your health and improve your indoor air quality. Also, learn how to reduce odors. Does activated carbon work well?

Do you think Clean Air Kits Exhalaron will suck cigar smoke right into itself if I sit right next to it? Or do you think the rate at which the cigar is putting out smoke would be too fast for it to keep up? Maybe I can finally smoke cigars in the house this winter. Keep me from freezing outside. Oh and thanks for the info. Was searching for hepa purifiers and you changed my mind. Am going to build your DIY one in the next couple of months. regardless of the cigar thing.
How do you do the protien test? If the problem is mould getting out of cracks, shouldn't step 1 be run a caulking gun around top & bottom of the kickplates everywhere?
Awesome video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I do not understand why you discourage people on buying different/cheaper dehumidifiers? hopefully its not solely because of the referral links
With dehumidifiers, as with any product, you get what you pay for. Cheaper dehumidifiers tend to be less efficient, louder, and fail much quicker than more expensive ones. Cheaper dehumidifiers also do not have good filters, so are not protected from being colonized with mold and bacteria, that then gets blown throughout your living space. The Santa Fe dehumidifier I recommend in this video is MERV-13 filtered, as are some Aprilaire dehumidifiers. You don't have to buy the Santa Fe one, Aprilaire is a good bet too. P.S. They're just amazon referral links - anyone can get them for pretty much any product. I have no partnership with Santa Fe.
@@HealthyHomeGuide gotcha, well, thank you for your response and time, really apreciate your videos :)
light headness and realizing my place isnt well ventilated made me realize iit wouldnt hurt to inform myself on co2 levels / better ventilation
I accidentally ordered 16x25 instead of 16x30. Will this work, or will the loss of filter surface area negativity affect the performance to the point i should send them back?
16x25 works great.
Did you see Jaspr units?
Are robot vacum plus mop cleaners beneficial ?
My homes problem it is spikes in humidity we live in cold climate and small like 900 sq feet area so spikes in humidity are often from showers and cooking or even breathing at night exhaust fans are not helping I'm monitoring and see it reaching 70% humidity in bedrooms where it then condenses on cold walls. I can open a window and let the freezing air dehumidify but my concern is when I'm not around or in the middle of the night these spikes happing. Install team will not install because lack of space for ducts...
Your description has a link to 16x25x1 filters. It also has a link to an S14 fan. You might want to fix that. Hate to see people make the same mistake i did.
Like I said in the description, 16x25 is now what I use. More convenient when building the box and when changing filters/disposing of them. Also, the S12 link is the correct link - it's only linking to the S14 because the S12 is temporarily out of stock. (It says that on amazon).
@HealthyHomeGuide Ahh i see that now, whoops. I actually made it work by installing on top. The fan needs a higher speed to create better negative pressure. I like the fan. I will just get 16 x 30 next time and try the fan in the other direction with the filters facing the other direction as well. Less air turbulence, however, it may reduce the cfm. Not that it hasnt been done before, but ill check back in with results. Prob be a while though.
@HealthyHomeGuide do you have any good sources for 16x30 filters? Thanks!
you need to consider cleaning the air of voc's and other gases such as formaldehyde. Particulate filters are only 1 part of the story. HEPA and CADR and CR boxes will not accomplish this.
Can you use a higher Merv rating filters for a CR box?
I love to agitate carpets 😀🧡🇦🇺
Dang! Ive been dusting for ages, by blowing onto the window sills. And i found out today, my son's allergy is for dust mites 😖Doh! I really appreciate thexe videos. I trust normal people, who give away their help like this 🥰 Doctors don't know s$*+
I'm allergic to dust mites too! Good luck, and thanks for watching.
You had me at Hot Glue Gun. I have power tools (,a drill and jigsaw; i can use them too😆) but this looks do-able for chics😀👍. Im trying to cure my son's allergy to dust mites ,& grass seeds. Im stoked i found this info 🧡🇦🇺
Such great info nobody else has reported!
Glad you understand!
Will this work for 3d printing particals
Ok so which air cleaner is best? Please advise
I would have separated the clamshell of the fan, placed the coroplast in between, and then sandwich it back together. No need for rope.
I'm thinking of buying a PC and I'm concerned about the dust that might affect it. So I'm wondering if I should get an air purifier for my bedroom or not. Should I get one?
I use a Germguardian AC4825E. It seems to work pretty well, but, the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) is low, and the filters are very hard to find, and expensive. I also have an Ionic Pro electrostatic air purifier, which also has a good first pass efficiency, but, it produces Ozone, and it needs a lot of maintenance. The problem with both of these, is that they draw air in the back, and blow it out the front. I much prefer the Corsi-Rosenthal design, because it draws air in all sides, and in my design, the bottom as well, (I used a filter underneath, and have it on a grid, spaced off the floor) then, blows the air out of the top. That creates a toroidal circulation, like a ceiling fan, placed of the floor. It's able to circulate air throughout a large room, collecting dust from every corner. I placed an annulus around the fan blade of a box fan, and closed off the corners, so there is no back flow around the top. This rig has 10X the airflow of both the other purifiers combined! I used four 20X25 Filtrete MERV 13 filters to make the sides, and a 20X20 (same specification) filter to make the bottom. It's big, it's ugly, It's loud as can be, but incredibly effective! It's amazing, when rays of sunshine beam through the windows, and you don't see a single speck of dust in the sunbeams.
Can't find that fan in Amazon in Stock. Any alternative option?
Please look into Camfil filters.. Especially CityM
That is really nice. If I was going to get nit picky, I'd replace the nylon rope with polyester rope that will never stretch. Coroplast is easily cut with a multitool and J-hook blade.
Dude....zip ties
You have to use the right peppermint, I've been told it's called Mentha piperita variegata
You have symptoms of mold toxicity. Especially if your blood pressure is elevated, you should have your home tested for mycotoxins.
Agreed. Well spotted! This video came out a while ago and I've since been in treatment for mold illness.
@@HealthyHomeGuideoh wow. Sorry to hear that. Don’t know if you’ve discovered yet, but cotton clothing concentrates the toxin. I’ve switched to all “plastic” clothes (nylon, polyester, etc) with good result. Btw, wonderful work on the heat exchanger! Cheers!
.... did you remove the plastic from the filter?
Of course.
Hi my dude, i dont have a large space to filter and i am also renting, however i do have ideas for something custom. How strong does a fan need to be to push though a hepa core carbon filter combo? How do i calculate this? Would i in theory be able to do this with a single or arangement of silent PC ventilators given a particular area?
Im using OREck bought it 2006 cost me 300$ supposedly it's washable filter, when i open to wash it never find much debris
I have a Bissell Air220. The HEPA filters are $25 and come with activated carbon. I replace them every six months. How often do these DIY need to be replaced, because currently on Amazon it would cost me $84 instead of $25 per six months.
4:22 why is it that the streams don't mix?
Great question! The streams don’t mix because of how the heat exchanger is designed. The intake and exhaust channels alternate, and they’re completely sealed off from each other. Each channel faces a different direction, so the airflows move parallel but never meet. This allows heat (and sometimes moisture) to transfer through the thin walls of the channels without letting the actual air streams mix. It’s a clever design that keeps the fresh air coming in clean while pushing the stale air out. Let me know if you’d like more details!
I just finished my build, so clever to hot glue the filters together I did not have a compass, I know I have one somewhere in the house... so I use whatever I had in the kitchen and found something that was 12.75 in. with a bigger hole I was able to use tye wrap and they do not catch the fan. I was afraid that the coroplast would not be strong enough but it does hold to my surprise. Thanks for showing us that
Sounds great!
Now my indoor air is so much cleaner from the outside air that when I open the windows(especially now in winter) I always get traumatized, maybe I should build an ERV aswell
I totally get that! Once you’ve experienced consistently cleaner indoor air, it’s hard to go back to outdoor air, especially in winter when things like wood smoke or inversion layers can make it worse. An ERV could definitely help if you want fresh air without sacrificing your indoor air quality. It balances ventilation while retaining heat and moderating humidity, which is especially useful in winter. If you’re up for another DIY project, it could be a game-changer! If you want more info or help getting started, feel free to visit my website and schedule a chat-I’d be happy to help.
do you have a good option that's safe for parrots? and confirmed to be... as i own parrots and birds have VERY sensitive respiratory systems a lot of these products can be damaging for them (even types of heaters, cooking pans, perfumes, essential oils you name it...) and i don't know what other option to use apart from my current levoit air purifier (the refills can get pricey) let me know if there's a better option PLEASE. and thank you so much for the research on this video i appreciate it a lot!
Thanks for all you've done on these videos! Saved a lot!
Glad to help!
I like this design! I am going to build a wood design around simething like this and sound absorbtion.
Nice, good luck!
Thanks for the great information, from the very dirty Philippines.
Glad it was helpful!
Are the small Levoits a waste of money then? Will one of those that you made cover a 2 story house or shoould i make multiple?
What would you think about adding a UV light inside hanging down from the fan with just a base socket for the bulb to screw into?
what do you mean the brands not to worth it to buy??
I just purchased and installed a BlueAir 411i Max air purifier today in my bedroom from Amazon. I’m curious what our thoughts are of that particular one?
Might want to update the link. Link you have says it’s the 12 inch fan, but brings you to amazons 14” which is too big
Thanks! I've added a note to the description.
I have asked questions on other sites about air purifiers and have not had any luck hearing back from the site owner. Maybe that is because my question is hard to answer, I don't know. My situation is that I live right next to a very busy road with buses, trucks, the whole works. Also, I live outside the US in a location where the clean emission standards are relatively lax. So I really have a problem. My first question is, can this car emission problem truly be improved at all in the first place with an air purifier? And next, what do you recommend I should buy of the types that you discuss here. I am not a carpenter type, I probably should not try to build my own unit. So what is next? You spoke about pre built types. Is that the way to go? I would greatly appreciate if you could help me figure out 1) can serious car exhaust pollution from outdoors be fixed inside the house with an air purifier? And 2) which model and how many units? My house is airy, not air tight. It has high ceilings. And the square footage is probably about 2500 sq ft. Thanks very much for any thoughts
Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you’re dealing with a challenging situation, but the good news is that there are definitely solutions. Air purifiers can help with traffic-related pollution, but it’s important to choose the right ones and consider your home’s setup. Rather than giving you a one-size-fits-all answer, I’d love to help you figure out the best approach for your specific needs. Feel free to visit my website and schedule a chat-I’ll make sure to get you on the right track!
Wow. Never would have thought. Awesome info.
Glad you think so!
Sorry, I don’t get it. We would never use an air filter in an open room (windows/doors open or any way for the outside air to get in). We have a number of inexpensive HEPA filter devices, and the AQI (or PM2.5 rate) drops significantly and stays low while using the device. Surely, it’s a matter of managing the room airflow, not so much the type or quality of filter?
What are your thoughts on steam cleaners (like the Dupray)? Was considering getting one for cleaning tough grime. I’m concerned it will introduce too much humidity and breed mold where I use it.
Great question! Steam cleaners like the Dupray can be effective for removing tough grime, but it’s important to consider the balance between cosmetic cleaning and health-focused cleaning. For health, the goal isn’t necessarily to have things looking spotless but to create an environment that doesn’t impact your well-being. Tools like microfiber mops are great for trapping and removing fine particles, especially those from mold, which can resuspend into your breathing zone or settle on your skin. Steam cleaners can introduce a lot of moisture, which may not fully evaporate in certain areas, potentially creating conditions for mold growth. If you’re focused on cleaning for health, I’d recommend weighing whether the aesthetic improvement justifies the added moisture and effort. In many cases, a good microfiber cleaning routine may be a safer and equally effective approach for keeping your home healthy.
From Northern Canada here. 1950s home and no ducts. Super humid and cold here. Thanks for the dehumidifier tips. 🫶
Happy to help!
There was a guy who pioneered a cheap DIY kit based on a study done in Beijing. IT WORKS like you said. Years later the same guy's company is selling expensive thousand dollars air purifiers too. What changed? Profit? I bought Trident air purifier which has a washable filter, no need to replace. I wonder if it actually works.
:-) Curiosity and research are good things. 👍
Yes they are!
