Simple, clear guitar lessons, for beginners and beyond.
My mission is to empower you to play guitar and have fun.
I have always found most music lessons too complicated and not focused on practical playing. I have become the teacher I wish I had when I was starting out: simple, clear, PRACTICAL and effective.
There are several series of guitar lessons here:
"Learn to Improvise Lead Guitar with the Chop Shop" is a lead guitar course. This is a method many pros use. Now you can join them.
The "Hand Magic" series teach simple techniques to learn guitar faster and get great results with less effort. These are the "wish I'd known that when I started" lessons.
"Intro to Fingerstyle" is my own, different approach to teaching fingerstyle in a very simple and straightforward way.

Learn all the notes on the guitar neck - with CAGED!
In this lesson, we learn how to QUICKLY and practically learn how to easily find all the notes on the guitar neck in any location. You will notice I do not say MEMORIZE. We are not memorizing ANYTHING. We are learning, with ears and fingers. It faster and you will remember forever.
In this video we look at practical examples of how the CAGED system unlocks the toy box of practical music - in both chords and in melody.
This lesson is filled with practical examples and a simple drill to get the information DIRECTLY into your fingers. NO THEORY required.

Great vid
Thanks so much!
the way the beatles end songs is the best
Thanks! It was an idea they "borrowed" from Glen Miller, who was a master arranger and who often used the 6 chords as a closing crescendo. The Beatles were big Glenn Miller fans and, of course, masters at emulating their musical idols.
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀. There is lots of other stuff - on chords, triads, CAGED, and patterns on the guitar. Come on by any time. And if there is anything you want a lesson on, let me know: I am always looking for suggestions from my viewers! Keep on playing and having fun!
That was super helpful. I have not understood that until now. Thank you
I am glad. My whole mission is to demysitfy all the things I found confusing when I was getting started. There are lots of other lessons here on chords, triads, CAGED, patterns. Let me know if there is anything you need!
which is the chord beetles likes to end songs with --- WOW Loved it !
Thanks! I am glad it was helpful. I have lots of other stuff here on chords, harmony, triads, CAGED. Let me know if you are looking for answers - I am always looking for new lesson ideas!
Unfair advantage when you can look at both hands at once!
Hi! This is just an excerpt from the full lesson. Full lesson shows both hands! th-cam.com/video/qx2jU4dZQZE/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Who was the person who discussed Csus2?
It was Chuck Cannon - an incredibly gifted Nashville Singer Songwriter. There is a 5-part workshop he led in 2009 right here on youtube: th-cam.com/video/ZxPzrzmdYes/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Enjoy!

Thank You. Thank You. This is great. BTW: Many years ago someone posted the message board on John's site..... "The last quarter of the 20th centruy would not have been worth living without John Prine". The same thing could be said about the 1st quarter of the 21st. century.
Thanks! I have a few more Prine lessons here: Summers end, in spite of ourselves, hello in there. Also Blaze Foley's Clay Pigeons and a couple of Gurf Morlix songs too. Have fun and enjoy your guitar! And thank you!
@@bonarsmusic01 Is there a way to get the tabs for these songs on a printed sheet or in downloadable form? It's much easier for me to learn if I can see the whole thing in one place. Is it possible to buy these from you?
@@100perdido email your request to me at bonar.harris@gmail.com. tell me what song you want. I have my own transcription notes for most lessons.
@@bonarsmusic01 Fantastic. I will e mail you soon. Thanks Again.
Beautiful!
Thanks! You might also enjoy the lesson for "summer's end"
Finally after doing these consistently i can finally play cherub rock without causing a fire on my fingers
Fantastic! Rock on! 🤘🤘🤘
Great lesson. Really enjoy this song. Thanks.
My pleasure!
Only problem with tusk is there white. Prefer black ebony, look’s better on my Martin, so black with pearl inlay is my choice. Thanks for the great video.
Ebony is just as good, if not better, but takes a little more shopping. Worth a mention though! The main thing is to use a good dense material, and not cheap plastic. Thanks for stopping by. Visit again soon!
Great video, interesting teaching ! Thank you
Thanks! Hope you had fun!
@@bonarsmusic01 Yes ! Thanks again. Best regards from France
daughters came rushing to me after hearing that first chird
Yep. I learned Daughters when it came out. A beautiful song.
Salut!
Excellent! Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful! I just want to get everyone playing.
Here's a tip that actually causes pain, but if you can do it, you'll develop calluses FAST : play the opening riff to "When I'm Lonely" by Hootie and the Blowfish until your fingertips are absolutely on FIRE! Then go wash a decent sized load of dishes by hand, or soak in a bath for awhile, and the calluses will fall off. After your hands are completely dry again, pick up your guitar and play, but only for a few minutes. Then start the process all over again the next day, and keep doing that until you eventually reach the point where the calluses stop falling off after they've been in water, and that does eventually happen. But, this is more for first time learners, not people getting back into it after several years, because I'm pretty sure you're only going to have the patience to do this once.
Not sure I endorse this. I am more of a "baby steps" kind of guy, but I am sure your "extreme callus" method works - for the "hardcore" student. 😃
@@bonarsmusic01 yeah, I did it many years ago at a time when learning/playing was really basically an addiction, and 27 years later, I'm pretty sure I couldn't do it again.

Thank you for the tips Bonar I appreciate it
I hope they're helpful! Have fun!

Thanks! I have a few more John Prine lessons here: Summer's End, In Spite of Ourselves, Hello In There, I Remember Everything. More coming soon. More Blaze planned too. I also have a couple lessons on Gurf Morlix songs: One More Second and Crossroads. Gurf was Blaze's friend and musical partner back in the 1970s. Have fun, and keep playing!
Nope, not nearly enough wraps there. Need at least six or eight more. To be safe I'd add twelve.
I appreciate the humour, but I am addressing a video like this to actual beginners who don't already know what to do. Please be considerate of them. Try to remember how YOU felt when you were just learning: you were hungry for all the help you could get. Thanks for stopping by!
@@bonarsmusic01 Geez. Excuse me for trying to help Mr. Grumpy.
Sorry, not being grumpy. But if you were serious about 12 winds, then you are mistaken. You literally only require 2 or 3 winds around the capstan. Honest. I really know this stuff. This is the engineering magic of the concave tapered capstan. It uses an ancient design derived from the cleats used to tie off rigging on a sailboat. The taper of the capstan squeezes the guitar sting into position, and locks it in. Even with only two winds around the capstan. I promise!
Very good, thank you. I never heard of Blaze Foley until I heard John Prine sing this amazing song. Blaze died protecting his neighbor from his neighbor’s son. What a talent these two guy’s were.
I have a bunch of John Prine Lessons here on Bonar Guitar. I also just published a new Guard Morlix lesson - crossroads. Gurf Morlix was Blaze Foley's friend and collaborator back in the 1970s. Let me know if there is a song you are looking for help with: I will whip up a lesson! Keep on playing!
Sorry about the typo. Otto Correct fights me every day!
@@bonarsmusic01 auto correct gets me all the time. When I finish Clay Pigeons I’ll definitely look at your other lessons.
Great lesson. How can I get a copy of the chord worksheet? Thanks

Great. Thank you so much for doing this lesson. Appreciate all you do.
Have fun!
I have a good friend who's a top shelf Jazz bassist who told me the crazy glue trick decades ago.
It works. I have used all of them, over the years!
Just heard Kelli Moyle cover..best cover. Love this ...universe sent me. Guitar in corner never played. We will see.
Well, I remember everything is not EXACTLY beginner stuff, but there are TONS of beginner lessons in the Beginners playlist here. poke around and see what you think! Good luck!
Thank you Bonar for this, I really appreciate it.
Hope it is helpful! And fun!

Thx much, any chance you can show us Kate Wolf's 'The Trumpet Vine'
Yes, I have taught "green eyes" before, so I am a little familiar with Kate. I have just looked at "trumpet vine". Great tune. I will shoot a lesson soon, and I will let you know when it's online. Maybe in the next few weeks.
John , I believe used the Travis Style picking, only using his thumb and index finger while picking
That might be. I have not analyzed his right hand thoroughly. I transcribed the notes he played, and provided my best estimate of the easiest way to play them. Mississippi John Hurt played mainly with thumb and one finger, and Lightning Hopkins too. Mostly it is effective, but it actually makes some faster riffs harder to play. Merle Travis usually used thumb plus two fingers.
@@bonarsmusic01 Merle Travis 2 finger pickn style.
I stand corrected. The "Travis Picking Style" is often two or even more fingers. I learned it from Chet Atkins lessons. But when I go pack to actual Merle Travis videos, in fact he was thumb plus one, as you have described! And a wicked player too!
@bonarsmusic01 From what I understand and see after watching Mr's Prine and Travis, they're style comes from the small town Coal Miners area and that keep it simple way of moving on the fret board. Keep up the good work !

This was very helpful thanks. I being lazy tuned my G string down a half step so I wouldn’t have to do those stretches on the first two cords. Had to tweak the third chord too of course.
What some call "lazy" others call ingenious! Well done!
does not work. string and ball is stuck in the groove of the pin . string cannot be pushed down
Okay. Officially (as I said in the video) I would take it to a technician now. However, if you have a small awl, you could reach into the sound hole, and use the awl to pull the ball down, setting it free. Carefully brace the top of the bridge with the other hand. There is a risk of damage, but if you are careful you might be able to get it free. If you watch the video I demonstrate how to carve your bridge pins so the ball cannot get stuck. Good luck!
@@bonarsmusic01 thank you
Keep going man
I will! Thanks for the support!
good explanation and example!
Thanks! 😃

Thanks. I have a few other John Prine lessons on the channel too: Summer's End, Clay Pigeons. In Spite of Ourselves, Hello In There. Have fun and enjoy your playing!
Doesnt more pressure make calluses faster tho? Like if thats just the goal? Then fixing the habit once calluses are acquired
In my. experience, more pressure does not build calluses faster. Of all the tips, NOTING accelerates callus development more than frequency of play. If fingers don't hurt (from too much pressure) you will practice more frequently. That is the number one callus builder. Even if you only practice a few minutes at a time; practice as frequently as you possibly can. Also, good grip and precision placement give you speed, mobility and great tone. Do you want to sound like Jeff Beck, or do you want to sound like Doug from next door. Up to you.
@@bonarsmusic01 gotcha, thanks 👍, I just started learning guitar literally a week ago so my advice is always to be taken with a grain of salt, thanks for clearing that up!

Hey, I just want to say thank you so much for this video. This is the first vid of yours I watched but it will most certainly not be the last. Your teaching methods are exactly what I’ve been looking for ever since I’ve started playing guitar 8 years ago. I’ve looked in and out for people online that can teach tutorials but no one ever seems to execute it properly. But you did, and I just want to thank you for that. And also thank you for finding of version of this song that isn’t so staticky so I can properly hear the guitar. Please never stop making these videos, I will watch every single one of them.
I am glad! I am making the videos I wanted when I was learning! And don't worry - lots more in the works! Thanks for watching!
Nice bro keep it up❤Jesus loves you
