    Is plumbing antifreeze the same as glycol? Do you mix it with water? I sourced plumbers antifreeze which states it is good to -50. If I mix it 50/50 with water do you think it would still work to -25? I would like to use it for a closed loop for my still condenser.

    Nice system. What pump do you use and what's the size of your FV? Also what's the temp of the glycol inside the freezer? Thanks a lot!

      the pump was a pump off ebay 800 gph. its 55 gal FV. I dont use this system anymore. If you see my other videos you can see my upgraded system.

    you should not have the inlet to the cooler above the pump, you should have it in the other corner of the cooler so the glycol water mixture have to travel to the other corner of the cooler where is the pump, so it will have more time to be cooled by the element.

    How has the manifold and chiller been working? Any problems? Any more updates or changes? Would you change anything if you built this again? I ordered a pair of the valves you used. I plan on building my manifold once glycol pack arrives. How do you think this manifold would function if I built it vertically? The outs to the 2 fermentors on the ascending side, pressure gauge in the lateral section with a restriction valve next in line, then both returns from fermentors on the descending pipe, then back to reservoir right below.

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      everything still works great. i havent used it as much since it has been cold. the only thing i would change is the chiller. it works fine but i would like to have a actual glycol chiller. i think it would work vertically. i just used a diagram that i new worked but im sure there are other ways to do it.

      its just a aquarium pump off ebay 800gph i think.

  • @davincrook9927
    @davincrook9927 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work. Some thoughts for version three: I assume you've filled the system with some more glycol so that the entire condenser is submerged, but if not, I think you should as the system should function more effectively as there would be a much larger "active" surface area exchanging heat from the glycol to the condenser. Also, since you are using the system to cool the fermenter to pitching temps, you could consider increasing the size of the glycol reservoir so that there will be a large volume of fluid that can be used to cool the wort instead of relying on the continuous output of the AC unit.

    How do you secure your in and out lines that go thru your lid? I see a coupler but what do you have on the bottom side of the lid with the coil? Also, we have a 550 gallon pond pump which is much larger than what we had prior. We are having challenges getting the water to go in and return if there is more than one fermenter. We have a 10 gallon barrel full of water with the return bucket/coil. We are prepping some new plastic fermenters next week and would appreciate your feedback asap if you can!Thanks,Tim

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      im assuming your talking about the fermenter lid? i just got some stainless steel compression fittings off ebay. have you seen my updated system its a lot more efficient and would work better with multiple FV's.

    • @owentp
      @owentp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did similar set up with the PVC lines. Our pump is bigger and hardly pumps through the 2nd or 3rd FV. We have 1/2" lines on 2 of them. Perhaps I need to go 1/4" ID? As far as the lid and the recirculation ports......I did something similar and they lead. Concerned that water will get into the beer somehow.

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well you can always go with a jacket then you dont have to worry about contamination from leaks. i would try smaller lines. i have 3/4 in pvc on my main trunk line but the jacket that i have has 1/4 tubing i think or maybe smaller. the pump i use is 800 GPH.

  • @gamerkid24.7
    @gamerkid24.7 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool video. I'm wondering if there's a reason the system needs to circulate constantly, or if it would be okay to have the pump run only when at least one of the tank solenoids are open?

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      recirculating keeps the Glycol and water from separating because the water will freeze if it does

  • @owentp
    @owentp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you using 1/2" or 3/4" PVC?

    • @brewtime3919

      3/4 pvc

    • @owentp
      @owentp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just got a few more questions and hopefully that will be it. I want to build this for my nano brewery. Was there a measurement guide you used on overall size of your manifold and or spacing between each solenoid/return line? I plan to start out with 3 1-bbl fermenters and then a brite tank with maybe adding a 4th fermenter. Could you share your overall parameters? Did you notice a difference in temperature change between using your chest freezer vs the ac unit with just the glycol/water mix?

    • @owentp
      @owentp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you are fermenting, you close the valve completely or leave it open some for recirculation?

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i leave it half way open so that the glycol can still recirculate back into the tank

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pro Chiller has a PDF of the design that i copied, but i just built the system to the room that i have available. so there isnt any specific measurements. i believe that the spacing between solenoid valves would depend on how big your fermenters are. also it sounds like your system will be bigger so you will need a bigger pump, you might want to get a pressure regulator so you dont damage the jacket on the tanks. here is a pic of the system i copied. www.probrewer.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Glycol-Brewery.jpg Also here is my email if you have any other questions Justin@whitetailbrew.com

  • @owentp
    @owentp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wondering where you got the updated solenoids from and how much? What kind of power source did you wire them up to and where did you get those? Great looking system!

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I got them on ebay and they are 120v so they just plug into the outlet thats controlled by the Johnson Controller.

    • @owentp
      @owentp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the ones I got have 2 wires out only. You wired them to a standard plug or directly into the Johnson controller?

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      im amusing your talking about the solenoid valves. i wired them to a cord end that plugs into the outlet and the outlet is controlled by the Johnson controller. that way if anything happens i can just unplug the valve and it will stop flowing. also there is not a ground that is why there is only 2 wires.

  • @owentp
    @owentp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you pump the glycol through the coils on the fermenters or water? If glycol, how do you make sure that there is no possibility of leaks?

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i use glycol. the fermenter has a jacket around the outside of it so it would be impossible for glycol to touch the beer if there was a leak. the other fermenter with the immersion coil i have tested all the connection and it doesn't leak.

  • @markthorsted9727

    do you have any idea what the return temps are when you run it thru the frozen coils.? and how many feet do you have in the frozen copper coils. ?

  • @almccombe4636
    @almccombe4636 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think a 5.1 cu ft chest freezer with 5 gallons of glycol/water mix would be enough to keep a jacketed 7 gallon SS fermenter cool? My ambient is ~75 and I'm trying to keep my beer in the mid 60s. Also, what glocol:water ratio would you recommend? This is the most helpful video BTW. I don't feel comfortable dissembling an AC unit to achieve similar effects.

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +albe McCombe i think that would work. i cant remember what ratio we did. we just read the instructions on the glycol bottle we got.

  • @PaulHoffman
    @PaulHoffman 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you needed to find a way to increase the temperature of your fermenters? I'm in a non-heated garage in Wisconsin in winter and would have the need to possibly increase the temp as well. Thoughts?

    • @brewtime3919
      @brewtime3919 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Hoffman if you have a jacket like mine you can pump hot water or glycol through it. you would have to use aquarium heaters to heat it. or the easier way would be to buy a heating jacket that just plugs into your temp controller. you can buy one at www.gotta-brew.com/categories/accessories/heater.html
