Indy Car Racing 2 (60 fps interpolation, vid#)02 Dosbox-Rendition/RReady Rendition Verité @4k
This was captured with Nvidia's ShadowPlay and seems to have the missing interpolated frames. Advancing frame by frame should show the linear interpolated (blend of previous and next frame frame) in between. The framerate does dip below 60 fps at times with ShadowPlay, but most of the time, the generated frame should be visible.
Better methods of interpolating are under investigation. It's a shame "Lossless Scaling" doesn't seem to work with it.

It's time for an obligatory vQuake video with the new Dosbox-Rendition optimisations. Embedding RReady directly in Dosbox-Rendition isn't necessary for high framerates. In fact the reason embedding made vQuake run faster (and other apps slower or the same) was a matter of focus. On the left the pre-optimisation run and on the right the new code. @@sharangadayananda Ill check, thanks !
If you're using the Rendition renderer, you'll have to set the upscaling resolution to default and use the resolution settings in the game, which apply to actual gameplay.
Looking good. Does it do both versions of the game?
At the moment just Speedy3D. Cgl support is currently being looked at. I hope to get cgl up and running within the next 6 months.
This is just awesome. Lovely. Hitting FPS Ceil wow.

Thanks, maybe you should give it a go?
@@sharangadayananda i give a try later
Congratulations on fixing those, when i arrive i will do all the testings
Thanks! Looking forward to that!
Some Sprites like trees have "GL_REPEAT" so we can see line on top of all trees. And some sky textures have that repeating state which makes lines visible where various sky textures connects, its noticeable.
Aargh! How is it in the original game? I should probably test it on my Stealth II. The game usually sets requests the state. [EDIT] Nope, the line's not there on original h/w.
Maybe it just needs integer texture coordinates (rounded to the nearest texel) like Tomb Raider.
I disabled texture clamping globally for this game and the line was still there. Even forcing tex coord rounding didn't work. I think the texture dimension is being miscalculated here. Usually for DOS games, the U and V Multipliers are equal to the horizontal and vertical size of the texture. [EDIT] On real hardware accessing a texture beyond its limit, if it's not clamped by umask and vmask will read VRAM beyond the edge. With RReady VRAM constrained by the multipliers is loaded as a texture. Will look into this. [EDIT] added to my bugs list.
The stray line on top of the tree line was in fact a GL_REPEAT bug. Well spotted! Setting the default clamping mode to NO_CLAMP (i.e. repeat) fixes the bug. The stray lines in the sky box is something more insidious.
first world problems
I see it as more of a retro gaming problem. Quakes 1 & 2 are still great games and deserve to run at their best, even in vquake flavours.

The update is live now.
Looks like the sprites don't render correctly. Is this normal behaviour or will be fixed in the future?
[edit] I see the problem. When I developed the wrapper I didn't actually have a Rendition board, so didn't actually pick up that chroma keying was too aggressive. Too much of the background is being removed. So much that part of the image is being lopped off. Yes it will be fixed, by the next update., within the next 2-3 weeks or possibly sooner. [/EDIT] Which sprites specifically? I don't remember seeing any missing sprites. But if there's a glitch, it will be fixed. The chroma keying might be too aggressive in which case it can be turned down. Before adding support for the last 3 games I'm working on improving compatibility with the existing games, so yes it will be fixed.
@@sharangadayananda Yep it looks like there are gaps within the enemy sprites (worst around the legs) when they should be solid. Good to hear it will be fixed, I've been waiting to play this game for many years. Great work, thank you!
Fixed in internal builds: th-cam.com/video/lMGNC85jebs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=93fHb-Ov0BLx6ahh Will need to test it thoroughly before pushing it out to the store. It turned out to be a a byte swapping issue (rearrange texture in vram and not a chroma keying problem.
Fixed in the watermarked alpha available here www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=1185389#p1185389 And without the watermark on the Microsoft Store. It's probably a good idea to test the alpha to see if things work on your system, in case you're planning to buy a copy. The store's servers might take a while to mirror the update.
@@sharangadayananda I bought the store version last night. Hopefully will be available soon.
Just want to tell you how much I appreciate your hard work on this! I've said for years that I would pay for such a wrapper and I just bought the full version today. You've made IndyCar 2 a game I want to commit more time on. Going to be experimenting with other games using it, too. Thank you!
You're welcome! I've also had a fabulous time making it. If you have any problems with any of the games, please comment here or email support@nirvtek.com. Rendition boards had a fabulous architecture. I was firmly in the 3dfx camp back in the 90s, but I feel a bit bit poorer now for not having had a Rendition card back then. But writing this wrapper has given me a lot of appreciation for what Rendition did back in the day. It's a shame the V3300 never came out, that would've been something to see. BTW how does icr2 run on your system?
@@sharangadayananda It runs liquid smooth, no stutter or hiccups. I have to figure out how to capture the mouse in DOSBox, since it's annoying to not have it for the menus, but that may be my own ignorance on it. I haven't tested any mod tracks yet but that's the next step when I have more time later this week. I should also mention that I'm on an 8 year old system with a GTX 1050. Everything seems well optimized even on lesser equipment.
Some of the tracks don't work with the rendition edition, the guys over at icr2.net are working on modifying them for Rendition support. Some tracks work fine. High poly car sets have performance issues related to dosbox's cpu emulation. Setting cycles=400000 in the [cpu] section of %localappdata%/dosbox/dosbox-rendition.config should fix it. It does need a beefy cpu though. This appears to be a limitation of dosbox (single core performance).
@@sharangadayananda For my own curiosity's sake, I tried running the Monster Truck Madness 2 Community Patch with the wrapper. It works, but is super draggy with the view distance maxed out. Definitely not a priority (a vanilla install of the game runs fine with Rendition), but more as an FYI: th-cam.com/video/CmECxnS1DRM/w-d-xo.html
@Arenacale I can try making it work better, but it's unknown territory. I've never actually tried the community patch. Gpl I think works with the community patch, you just have to switch renderer. (gpl must be run at default res RReady and the resolution select must be set in-game). Gpl takes a few seconds to start up.
wow looks incredibile
The only problem is to get high-poly car sets to run fast, a fixed number of cycles have to be used, which isn't ideal.

An initial release with vQuake support and a few more games is live on the Microsoft Store (US link): apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NRCQJ8VLGTK?hl=en-US&gl=US or you can use the freeware watermarked alpha release from here: www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=1185389#p1185389 The alpha release is identical to the store release except for the watermark. If you're running the alpha release the watermark might cover a lot of the screen, so set an upscaling resolution in RLauncher, in the DOS tab. The game will still be rendered at 320x200, but displayed at your monitor's native resolution. Most modern GPUs don't have inbuilt 320x200 resolution support, you'll have to either add a custom resolution OR upscale it (320x200 at 1920x1080p with 4:3 aspect).

This is on DOS. The Rendition Verité accelerated version of Whiplash running on dosbox-rendition with rready(Rendition wrapper). In case you were being facetious.
@@sharangadayananda That Looks Killer; I've been Repurposing Old PCs into retro games systems with my 3 lil ladies. I have a few mid 90s systems in the pile, I wanted to make a Killer DosBox instead of Emulation. I've been trying to find HD Packs for games like Quake III Arena in HD, Holy hell what an Upgrade to an already killer game So this is good to know, Appreciate the Responce!
Great work Cant wait to see the final result

My question would be, what are you testing? Graphical filtering etc or are you making changes to the base game?
the game stays original, this game developed for Rendition Verite video card, and their speedy3d api, this project is for making speedy3d version of game working on any other video card, on modern system , its like nGlide or dgVoodoo2 for games , its actually named RReady and its wrapper for rredline and speedy3d graphical api's
What @WhiteMagicRaven said. I'm posting clips of incremental improvements in compatibility.
Looking good! May I request that your next video be of testing at one of the special Rendition version tracks?
Can do. I need to get basic stuff working first. The rear view mirrors aren't quite 100% and some textures change brightness at odd times. But when I fix these I'll post a vid on a decent track. Once this works I'll have to develop a basic open source wrapper that ships with dosbox to comply with licensing. Rready will replace the built in wrapper. So even when this is done you'll have to wait a bit until that's ready or the Free Software Foundation will make my life very very difficult. The built in wrapper will be functional, but I won't guarantee image quality or performance.
The initilal release is live on the Windows store (US link listed below): apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NRCQJ8VLGTK?hl=en-US&gl=US A basic tutorial on what I consider important for setting up RReady is here. It's very basic but, it does cover basic setup: th-cam.com/video/p5YNRIrFeN8/w-d-xo.html ICR2/Cart 2 should be fully functional. Threadsafe = true might be required. But the code's been tweaked and it might not be necessary anymore. Oh and I couldn't register on icr2.net. Never got a confirmation from the admin.
Incredible stuff. Getting so close! There definitely are some artifacts present when using a real V2 board, so much so that I bought a v1 board to avoid them. You're seeing them constantly though, where on the real board I feel I would get some of these showing many seconds apart.
On a V2000 it runs like this th-cam.com/users/liveCwQSQ63W50c?si=I1njWSzIwnmr2eIc. The artifacts with RReady are a bug and will be fixed. There're also some corrupt textures, clamping modes (repeating textures sometimes not repeating like with some spectators)
amazingly smooth fps, sharp graphics =)
You kidding?
And corrupted textures!
@@sharangadayananda not kidding, its going very good, yes its not perfect, but much better than at start.
The cars drifting may be an issue of the pacejka tire model that happens with any sims implementing it.
Are you sure?
just played the videoloud befor playing ams2 indy 1995 mod
Hopefully I can do a release soon.

This is amazing! Thank you! Have you considered creating a Patreon so some of us can support this effort more?
I'll look into it. Wasn't really planning on it. Would be nice though 👍. You could buy a copy of RReady Rendition Verité on the Microsoft Store. Speedy3D/Dos support will be added for free as the games are made compatible. Currently all 13 RRedline games and all known demos are supported.
oh my god, i have happy tears =0. Just wow, i am frozen i can't comment ..... =0
You're not alone. This wouldn't have been possible without your tireless testing. Thank you.
Thank you sir 👍
There's still a lot more to do, so it'll be a while yet.
Does the version available in the store work fine with SODA? That's all I'd want it for. I tried it out the previous version and it made a huge difference running on Win11. Nice work.
Yes it does. The only difference between the two is the text at the top left of the screen. Oh and the launcher doesn't automatically download demos or game patches. Store rules on sideloading. I can't legally distribute them with rready. Download links to the demos and patches are in the help file on the store release. Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it.
@@sharangadayananda I've purchased now strictly for SODA as I play nothing else that old and despite a few glitches here and there, it's working quite well. I have a question tho... I have sometimes recorded my online races with friends but noticed I cannot record now when RR is running? Is there a way I can, or does it prevent me from doing so?
Thanks. You should be able to. What app are you using? Do your videos have a black screen? RReady uses opengl so you need something that can capture full screen gaming graphics. I made my videos using obs (open broadcast something). It's a free app on the Microsoft Store. I use fullscreen game capture with obs. You might have to select the profile before clicking capture. It works quite well and uses gpu based hardware encoders. Also you don't need the launcher running after the first time to play the game, unless there's an update or you need to change the config.
@@sharangadayananda I have only tried it with the "Snipping Tool Video" option built in Windows. It recorded the sound, but had you RR logo on screen whole time. Is there another program you'd recommend? Thanks.
@@sharangadayananda I figured it out. Nothing to do with your app as you said. Thanks again 😀
Hey mate just wondering how the rendition wrapper for icr2 is getting on?
Still in development. It's going to take a while.
Sorry Raven, your comment is hidden for some reason. I replied on Vogons.
Wow, great! I Should soon arrive at home and have access to real hardware. Before you move into dosbox, i want share what i found: 1. DosBox-X is have great realization of 3dfx glide trough openGL , even statically linked glide games is wrapped which considered as not possible before this fork, this means fast rendering and Control Panel (ex Nvidia) can affect games by forcing antialiasing and anisotropy. 2. DOSBOX Staging is another brilliant fork, it can emulate CPU at faster speeds Hz's than other forks, this ones even can run BUILD Engine games at high resolution without slowdowns , and heavy (resource demand) games like Chasm the Rift and Pyl (Dust) a polish dos 3dfx shooter.
