    Numbers 2, 3, 6 and 9…OMG, so true. 😂 We keep our Berner in the kitchen (which is quite large and has access to an equally large garden) - exactly because of the shedding hairs - but we must always close the door whenever we leave, otherwise he will open it and follow us everywhere, and if we leave him alone for too much and he knows we’re at home he will bark to call us. He would eat any kind of food he comes across (he especially adores pizza and steak, when he was younger he managed to steal them from the table a few times)….and I think he got out of his puppy stage at 4 years old. 🤣 Luckily he’s also 9 years old but has no major health issues yet and no signs of old age, so hopefully he’s gonna be an exception in that.

    I have a 9-years-old male Bernese….and I can second everything Charlie says, and also add that another fairly common health problem in this breed is (from what our vet said) they tend to suffer from arthritis and rheumatisms more often and earlier than other breeds. But it’s all worth it, these dogs are absolute treasures. 🩷🩷🩷🩷

    We had Bernese Mountain Dogs for almost twenty years, and I can tell they're affectionate verging on clingy. For someone who often requires personal time, this trait may lead to tension. They can exhibit stubbornness and mischief if they feel slighted by your actions-for instance, when you're on a deadline and need to focus, not out of neglect but simply requiring a few hours undisturbed. Ours hated hot weather, so summers were rather challenging, she would spend whole days under the dining table only stepping foot in the yard in the morning and in the evening. But they're also the best friend you'll ever have!

    Another good video. Many homemade diets are not nutritionally balanced. A big reason veterinarians don't recommend raw is liability. If a veterinarian tells me go ahead and feed raw, that vet has no idea where I am sourcing my ingredients or how I am handling the food. Has no idea what I am mixing in and in what ratios. If my cat gets sick, I blame the veterinarian. Call a lawyer. Especially in California. LOL Happy Caturday!

    Re chronic diarrhea, I’ve read Berners don’t have most of the problems they’re known for if they’re fed real raw meat and bones and not commercial dry food. My GSDs have no diarrhea since we switched. The puppy we bred in our home and was raised with real food had no diarrhea whereas the puppies we bought from breeders all had diarrhea, one had explosive diarrhea for months. I’m a living room breeder now because frankly I did a much better job and I have serious criticisms of the KCs and the breeding practices of “responsible breeders.” It’s better to get a puppy bred by a normal family in a home. Like humans did for thousands of years that we had dogs before we had KCs and “experts.” What did those dogs eat for thousands of years? Meat scraps and bones.

    • @beautyandtheberners
      @beautyandtheberners 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for watching and commenting! I agree with you that many digestive issues in Berners (and maybe other breeds) can be linked to commercial dog food. There is also still an irresponsible breeding component to many of the Berner’s health problems. We had the same experience as you where the kibble caused explosive diarrhea in our puppies for months at a time, and once we switched they all went away. Someday I may raise my own puppies, but I do have a few really reputable breeders in my network that we get great dogs from. Love that you’ve had success raising your own though! What do enjoy most about the breeding process?

Once I get a Berner, my next goal will be to add a Newfoundland Dog, which I consider to be the holiest of dog breed trios. Very good information. More people need to know it's ok to feed a mix of food. I was feeding my two cats the usual wet and dry commercial food. One cat started throwing up anything. The vet was useless, never asked about her diet. I started feeding her raw ground beef and she was fine. Now both cats eat raw ground beef and boiled chicken thighs. Once a week, a tin of sardines or poached salmon. One of my daughter's rescue dogs has several issues. He is on a vet recommended diet of dry kibble mixed with raw.

    Our Bernese is almost almost 2.5 years old. He is a wonderful dog and strong as a horse. I worry about him breaking my knees when he pushes up against me, I don't think he realizes his size or strength. I have heard cancer has increased amoung all the breeds and the blame is being laid at the feet of commercial dog food companies. We have supplemented his meals with beef heart and a fried egg. I hope this helps prevent cancer.

    • @beautyandtheberners
      @beautyandtheberners 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching! They tend to not know their own strength so consistent training for the behaviors you want is crucial. If he’s too aggressive leaning against you, try correcting that by moving away from him each time he presses too hard. In terms of the cancer risk, a lot of it comes down to genetics and lack of antioxidants in the diet to help prevent cell damage and mutation (cancer). Commercial kibble lacks antioxidants when compared to feeding a balanced fresh/raw diet. But if you want/have to feed kibble, supplementing with foods that contain antioxidants can help. Look for foods that contain kaemperfol - examples would be leafy greens like spinach, kale, collard and turnip greens. Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts are also full of antioxidants. Berries too. Animal proteins like beef heart and egg haven’t been linked to decreasing the risk of cancer exclusively, so try adding in some of these foods too. But great job in supplementing with actual whole foods! Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.😊

    • @beautyandtheberners
      @beautyandtheberners 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A good rule of thumb is to keep fresh/raw food bland and unseasoned. Frying adds unnecessary fat and oils to the diet that can actually offset the good you’re trying to do by feeding the eggs. And yes you can feed scrambled eggs! We do a few times a week. Just don’t add salt, pepper, a lot of butter etc.

    My doodles weigh 55 and 70 pounds. How much raw meat a day for them?

    • @beautyandtheberners
      @beautyandtheberners 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Aww love the doodles! Had a Labradoodle named Libby growing up☺. And great question because it's different than feeding in "cups" like we're used to when feeding kibble. The recommended guidelines for otherwise healthy adult dogs is 2% of their body weight per day in total pounds of food consumed. So your 55lb doodle would get 1.1lbs/day and for your 70lb dog would get 1.4lbs/day. So you'd be looking at 2.5lbs/day total to feed both dogs. Of those 2.5lbs, at least 1.5-2lbs is going to be made up of meat - whether that's muscle meat, organ meat etc. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions - always happy to help!

      @beautyandtheberners 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Thanks so much for your question.☺ I plan on doing a whole other video just on the protein that we feed, but to give you an idea, chicken is still the cheapest meat, with beef, duck, and salmon being more expensive. We personally don't feed poultry because our Berners are sensitive to it so our go-to's are beef, pork and salmon. Right now I'm buying beef with bone for $2.41/lb, and a beef/salmon mix for $2.81/lb. To compare, I could buy the chicken with bone for $2.11/lb. My husband is a hunter so we're lucky in that we get venison in the fall for free, and we also raise our own pork. I hope this helps! Let me know if I can answer anything else for you.

    Hi. Swiss here. Just a small correction. They do not originate from the city of Berne, rather from the Canton of Berne (a Canton is like a state in the US). The upper Berne region is the part that stretches into the alps and that's where they came from. In German they are called "Berner Sennenhund" which translates roughly to 'Bernese Alpine Farmers dog' and they were breed as guard dogs for sheeps and to help with small labours like pulling carts in the steep slopes of the mountains. The one thing they hate though is hot climate. In the Alps temperatures can briefly climb up to 90F in summer, but otherwise it is rather chilly or mildly warm in summer, so that is something to keep in mind

    • @beautyandtheberners
      @beautyandtheberners 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi and thank you for your comment! I appreciate the correction as I’m from the US and admittedly don’t know all the European catastral terminology. In a few of my other videos I do mention they were bred from “guard type breed dogs” and were originally bred to pull carts and do other work around the farm. Our Berners are “modern farm dogs” in that we live in a farm but they don’t actually do much work😂. Thanks again for sharing this info!

      @@beautyandtheberners It's not a huge deal, but I thought I share it with you. The City of Berne is what swiss consider in the low lands, so mostly hills. The state of Berne got it's name after the city. Just wanted to clarify this so people wont assume they are city dogs. Which they aren't unless you have a huge parcel with garden. They really are rural dogs and love the outdoor (especially in winter, they looove snow)

    I‘d add „you‘re not ready to handle a big, heavy dog“… especially for first time owners (like myself😅) I‘d argue it‘s difficult to train your bernese so effectively before they grow large that you will never encounter a situation when you need to be able to physically control/restrain them. they might not have a mean bone in their body but by their sheer size you need to be careful around kids, elderly people or those not steady on their feet.

    I agree with almost all points BUT I would put a lil caveat on 2 of them. 1) berners do have a big will to please but they also possess a level of independence that borders on stubbornness in some individuals. you need to be able to put your foot down and assert yourself, especially through their formative years (mine is 2 now and currently has a bit of a rebelious streak). 2) they DO shed but not as much as I thought before our babe moved in. depending on the climate you live in (in my case, switzerland) they shedding will be most prominent during the seasonal fur change. while I recommend getting your berner used to at home fur care, introducing them to being professionally groomed at an an early age can be very beneficial (especially the coat blowout). just make sure the groomer knows how to care for a double coated breed properly. I truely believe berners are the best and I think I will not let my house be without one ever again 🥰

    My Golden is an 85 pound 28ish inch tall monster who is still under 2 years old! :) I was looking for a service dog prospect and really wanted a Bernese, but ended up choosing a Golden for their longer lifespan. As for health concerns, one thing I have learned is that waiting to spay or neuter until your dog has fully matured and their growth plates have closed can mitigate at least some of the risk of hip and elbow dysplasia. Choosing a vasectomy or ovary sparing spay procedure instead of full spay or neuter can help protect them from many forms of cancer while also preventing unwanted pregnancy, though not all vets offer these alternatives and you may have to search around to find somewhere to have it done. The OFA provides a list of genetic and medical tests they recommend based on breed. Embark and Wisdom both offer health-based genetic testing that screens for things like cancer, and since they don't overlap on all of the tests, I recommend getting both if you can.

There was a study from UC Berkeley a few years ago and then another that just came out showing waiting to spay/neuter in some breeds (including male Bernese in particular) did show a statistically significant decrease in the incidence of osteo diseases and certain cancers. Of course this has been criticized as people think it will contribute to more overbreeding, but people need to be responsible for their animals as always.

    I've wanted a Berner for ages and was looking for one as a service dog prospect, but their short lifespan made it a poor choice for me. 😢 So I'll continue loving them from a distance. Thanks for the great video!

      Aww yes that really is the biggest downside of the breed. But the time we do have with them I wouldn’t change for anything! But I totally respect and understand your decision.😊 Thank you for watching! If there’s any particular question/area you’d like me to do a video on I’m happy to help!

    Loving your videos. I’m planning on overlanding across the globe full time and am thinking about getting a Burnese. Do you think this breed would do well with the constant travel and lots of long to very long hikes? On occasions I would need to leave the dog alone in the bus (fully air conditioned, monitored and ventilated of course) for maybe up to an hour, would this be too stressful for him? I plan on spending the majority of the time in cooler climates but would they hold up in some of the warmer climates? I will be travelling alone, will the dog miss not being around other dogs for periods at a time? I have so many questions 😂 Anyway thanks for your content 😊

      Hi! Thank you so much for your kind message - really appreciate it!🙏🏻 Truly at a base level, Berners love being with their person. And I say “person”, not people because it’s been my experience they will attach to one person above all others. So for your situation, I would say the breed would be a great choice. They do better with exercise that is low speed, long duration so as long as you’re not trail running, our Berners LOVE long, slow hikes. Just make sure to give them breaks if the weather is warm and provide them access to clean fresh water. And of course as they age just be aware of body language- they’ll tell you if it’s too much. And if you need to leave them alone for a time that’s fine. Especially if they’re mentally and physically tired. They’ll most likely not move the whole time you’re gone😂. It sounds like you’ve really thought this through which is awesome! I always advocate for the human adjusting to the breed, not the other way around. But my opinion, a Berner would really thrive in this type of lifestyle. Happy to answer any questions you have!😊

      Thank you! I love both breeds as well. I'm obviously partial, but whatever breed/mix you choose the most important part is that your lifestyle fits the dog and not the other way around. People run into trouble when they try to make the breed adapt and it causes problems, usually at the dog's expense.

    Thank you for the very informative video. I myself have certainly seen the clear benefits of feeding raw meaty bones and a raw diet to both of my Dogs. Even my vets who don't recommend this kind of diet have to agree that my Dogs are in great health. Reading through some of the comments in the feed, one in particular, seems to think that there is no research to back up the species appropriate diet when in fact there is more research done in this field than there is with other Dog foods. Thanks again for for taking the time to share your knowledge and will look forward to watching your other videos.

      Thank you for your comment! I love hearing stories like this and I’ve experienced the same thing with my vets. They don’t like it but they can’t deny the health my dogs are in. I know some of the comments are negative and that’s ok - I honestly expect it whenever I talk about this and it doesn’t bother me. But you’re absolutely right - there is a lot of verified research on the benefits of raw meaty bones and fresh food in a dog’s diet. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I follow the science and the results. I’m so glad your dogs are doing well! Keep in touch!

    Good video. Dogs and cats should be supervised when given raw meaty bones. Dogs have been living with humans for 30,000 years. Commercial pet food has been around for about 100 years. How did dogs survive without all of the wheat and corn we feed them now? The "Big Three" pet food makers have billions of dollars invested in their grain products. And Mars (Royal Canin) owns several veterinary clinic chains and veterinary practices. Happy Caturday!

    • @beautyandtheberners
      @beautyandtheberners 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes! Supervision when giving your pets raw meaty bones is a must. And right…dogs and humans have been been around long before the advent of commercial dog food. We have to think logically about what was available for them to eat then. And unfortunately there is a lot of conflict of interest between commercial dog food companies and veterinary medicine. Not saying all vets, but if you’re offering an incentive for a person to sell something, some people will take advantage of that for the wrong reasons. Really appreciate your insight!
