Soma Labs Lyra. Terra. Cosmos. Source Audio Ventris. Rhythmic Alien Ambient
Soma Labs Lyra, Terra, and Cosmos. Source Audio Ventris. 10(ish) minutes Alien Ambient, with some darker (and rhythmic) textures. FabFilter R2 reverb added in Logic Pro X.
Starting to look at some of the rhythmic patches within Terra. There are quite a few options, in this case an LFO was employed to provide a driving pulse. Terra also has an arpeggiator, but I have not explored it yet... (soon though I think).
The real challenge of this piece was to break it down in the middle of the song without losing too much depth or thickness. I try to only record what I can play live, and that presents obstacles. I almost made this track without the Lyra, but decided to use it sparingly, and I think it worked out well.
I should actually say that I wanted to use the Lyra from the start, but I wanted it controlled by the Ornament 8 so that I could focus on playing Terra/Cosmos. I spent a couple hours trying to get something usable for what I wanted to do, and ultimately just gave up. I just cannot seem to wrap my head around the Ornament 8. I have the basics of it down, but finding a way to use it musically has been problematic.
Any Ornament 8 masters out there wanna give me some tips??
Both tracks routed to a Bus with FabFilter R2 for additional reverb. The R2 plugin is freaking fantastic! I use it almost exclusively for reverb in Logic Pro (sometimes I still call on SuperMassive though). The Lyra track just has a touch added, but I sent a lot of the Terra track through it. That enabled me to used the delay on Terra which, I think, really thickens it up...

Soma Labs Lyra, Terra, and Cosmos. Source Audio Ventris. 20 minutes ambient, with some darker textures. FabFilter R2 reverb added in Logic Pro X. Had to get Lyra back into the action! I've been obsessed with the Terra since it came in a few weeks ago, and it has been hard to pay attention to any of my other synths... Terra and Cosmos make a perfect ambient minimalist's dream setup, really hard ...

Soma Terra and Cosmos. Source Audio Ventris. Minimalist Dark Ambient. Probing the Terra for Darker moods. I do believe darkness is contained within this machine, I have just been so mesmerized by the beauty that is so readily available that I have yet to look. I'd say I definitely stumbled across some potentially dark patches, I just need to spend more time with them. The initial patch in the v...

Soma Terra and Cosmos. Source Audio Ventris. Another awesome ambient session with this very minimalistic approach. The Soma Terra just continues to impress and inspire. The sounds coming out of this thing are just amazing! It's kind of an interesting thing, because I was not too sure about the limitations in sound design when I purchased it. I am used to being able to create patches and control...

Soma Terra and Cosmos. Another awesome ambient session! It has been raining and overcast the past couple days, so thought I would try for a stormy feel. Terra did not disappoint! I was actually quite impressed with how I was able to manipulate the spheres to make the wind sound...and the thunder too! Coupled with the wonderful reverb, very effective. I've only had this thing for a few days, but...

Earlier this year, I moved and all my gear was put into storage. Move is now complete. Studio is more or less set back up. Time to get back to some music! Just ordered and received the Soma Terra! My journey into ambient continues to evolve. The Terra (especially paired with the Cosmos) seemed like a no brainer for what I am hoping to explore and accomplish. I was not mistaken. Session 4 of The Art of Lyra series I've been working on... For some reason, I have been having trouble with the words in my videos. I check and double check everything, but I keep getting partial words and letters getting left off? Anyone know why? I am using Final Cut Pro. Anyway, I wanted to run a simple drone with Lyra and have Ornament guide her. I definitely did that, which allowed me to ...

Ok. Session 3 of The Art of Lyra series... This one was challenging. Over the past 8 - 9 days or so I have sat down a half dozen times to record this video. Most of those attempts ended after a couple/few hours of patching, repatching, and rethinking what was happening, only to eventually clear everything out and try again another day. I am still trying to wrap my brain around the Ornament8. I ...

I have decided to do a series of videos - The Art of Lyra - that focuses mainly on the Lyra 8 and Ornament 8. I have seen some of these around, like "30 days with the Lyra" type of thing, and it sounds fun and challenging. My main goal is to start with a clean slate every few days and patch up the Ornament 8. It feels like I should be able to make some interesting patches, but I am not sure how...

Still love that Lyra8/Ventris combo...so nice! First session with the Ornament 8 and it is an interesting sequencer, to say the least. The basics are pretty easy to understand. I am not sure of its full potential yet, so we shall see. I'd like to figure out how to make the Lyra evolve more without much attention from me so I can play other synths on top of it. I was talking to my wife the other day about how I often imagine a scene as I am writing new material. She said, "Can you write one about a human that grows up in a shell and then emerges? Some cinematic ambient style for this evening... Really been on this Sci-fi type kick lately, so I imagine writing for that scenario. It has been a bit dark, but not too dark - still some hope, however fleeting. I forgot to hit the record button on my camera, but basically I crafted some of this song with Arturia's Pigments and then played live over it for the DM12 parts. This is a new workflow...

Continuing to develop patches on the DM12 that I like. Most of them are from scratch, but some of them are tweaked from a soundbank I downloaded... Really into the brass right now! Also learning Arturia's Pigments. Probably the most versatile synth I've ever used. Right now, I'll mainly be using it for special effects and weird stuff the DM12 might struggle with. I love this and need to get a Terra immediately. This music is perfect for Gong Fu tea ceremonies
Yes! It is a great synth and I can def see this type of music for a tea ceremony. It excels at beautiful ambient soundscapes…
Absolutely excellent piece of music and skill fully played my friend! 💪💯 You really do make me want a Terra 😂. I don’t have any Soma gear but I can totally appreciate from a distance how good they look and sound… I also like the Solar 42! Maybe later down the line… there’s only so much money 😱😝 But yes, this is a great performance mate!
Thanks for the kind words! I have been drooling over the Solar 42...😂 Maybe one day. I still have plenty of exploring to do with my current setup!😂

This sounds so ethereal! But I read this can get into pure Noise if needs be.
Yep! You can hear some filtered noise on one of my other videos…. The 15 minute one. The Experimental engine seems like it can get pretty gnarly as well. Hoping to explore that one in my next video.

The Terra is my favorite instrument of the last few years. It encourages subtle expression and creativity to bring the best out of it. Lovely work.
@@ryanmanning1185 couldn’t agree more! I have cycled through a bunch of gear in the past couple years. I think this one is here to stay! The Terra Cosmos combo is just too perfect…
Wow, another cracking performance and I also love your commentary and visual vibe… I feel we are on pathways across a similar landscape… maybe we will cross paths… love it mate… please do keep this series of Terra & Cosmos going… it’s sublime … you are really getting my attention toward the Terra
🙏🙏 definitely gonna keep this going for awhile! Hoping to explore some of the darker sides as well…
@ Yeah definitely do please… that will be the deal breaker for me to see if I want to get one myself… my main output at the moment is dark, so it’ll be ace.
This is absolutely gorgeous and very cool… thank you for sharing it! Unfortunately (definitely fortunately!) it seems you have firmly placed the Terra back onto my radar… the way you played it and the pace in which you did so… 👌 I imagine I’d approach it in a similar way… it’s like a Vulcan instrument don’t you think 🖖 Subbed to your channel after this mate 💯 quality Edit: I’ve nearly finished listening and I’m really hoping you’ve already made more with the Terra… heading to your channel now! Edit 2: 😂 Oh and you have great taste in reverb… I have the very same pedal… it’s ace isn’t it… crystal clear
Thanks for the kind words! I absolutely love the Terra! It feels very expressive and it is becoming more intuitive to play… it definitely suites my style and workflow. The two videos I’ve posted have just been the Terra and cosmos - reverb from Terra alone. But I did start working on a new one yesterday using the Ventris…should be up in a day or two! Great reverb pedal!
@ Yes! Absolutely it’s an ace pedal… oh that is gonna be a great performance to watch, I’ll be watching for sure… I’ve just shared your video on my channel. I loved it 👌
@@cycleoffset Can I ask you a question about the Terra please? Is there any sense of a small latency or delay between you hitting or touching the metal domes and you hearing the sound… or is it immediate? 😃🙏🏻
@ it’s pretty immediate. When I’ve been trying to do some swells, the sound starts with the slightest touch - almost to the point where I can’t yet feel the sphere…
@ Thanks for the reply mate… oh wow 🤩 xx that sounds ideal… no jump to a start of sensitivity level then… awesome. I’ve just watched closely this video where I think Vlad is playing it th-cam.com/video/ls6Mx4FcNT0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VFVRUyXslwwZWWhT It’s bloody awesome… I can only imagine the dark sinister stuff I’ll be able to get out of it! This is excellent.
I’ve tried this. Was super Helpful. But no audio is coming from the digitone through syntakt. I can plug my headphones in digitone and the digitakt when pressed triggers digitone sounds. But when I’m listening through my Digitakt it’s nothing.
Did you get this figured out? Are the mixers up? Very strange…
@@cycleoffset sort of not really. Got the audio coming through. But the digitakt won’t play the notes/trigger notes from the digitone. I can program shit on the digitone and the digitakt can control the start stop but I have to manually change sequence etc. it’s weird.
Love the Cosmos!

@@Jaekristoff thanks!! I moved this year and all my gear is still in storage…hopefully I’ll be able to get it out soon and get back to some music!
Love it!! Great ambient track! I’m thinking of adding the td3 mo to my Digitakt and Digitone setup.. are you still using them?
Hey thanks for that!! I still have them, but haven’t used them in a bit. I tend to rotate through different setups based on inspiration, mood, etc. I also moved a bit ago and most of my stuff is still in storage. Hopefully I can get a “studio” space set up soonish.

Nice. I also kinda like your lamp set up. Who makes it?
Thanks! The lamp is just a LED music stand lamp. However, I cover it with a film that is just wrapped around it to dim/soften the light… mine has three intensity levels, but nothing special. I’m sure I probably got it from Sweetwater.

It’s nice to have a channel doing such a good content. I’m trying to figure out what is better for me. An Analog Rytm mkt 2 or the digitakt + the syntak. I need one or the other to create my own drum samples in the studio.. I work a lot with sound design and in the DAW I usually use synth and sample layers to make my own drum sounds. When I say digitakt + syntak it’s because I’m thinking about syncing the MIDI of the two devices and layering the synth (of syntak) with samples (of the digitakt). Example: in digitakt a clap sample and in the syntak a synth model clap. I’m trying to figure out which choice has more sound design power. In the Analog Rytm mkt 2 I can resample… but in the digitakt + syntak it looks like there is a bigger range of sounds for me to tweak and experiment with. What would be your suggestion? Thank you!
Thanks for that! To your question…I don’t have any experience with the Rytm, so I cannot speak to it. However, the Digitakt/syntakt combo is fantastic for layering. I have often used the exact process you are asking about with good effect. On some of my stuff, what I’ll do is have track 1 on the DT combine with 1 or 2 tracks on the ST to create a bass drum - much like using a daw. To go one step further, I’ll assign those 2 or 3 tracks to one midi channel on DT so I can mute the entire layered bass drum more easily… does that make sense? It is a great way to design more complex sounds. Last thing I’ll add…the DT is obviously super versatile (being a sampler), and I love the ST. But, I will say I feel like the ST is fairly limited in sound design. It is pretty easy to dial in sounds and there is some good variety, but that might be a consideration, depending on what you are trying to create. It is still my favorite stand alone groove box! Hope this helps!
Awesome work. The more I see(and hear) the Soma Cosmos I want one. I also have a DeepMind 12 and look forward to attempting something of this quality. Love the mood you create in this video.
Hey thanks! Appreciate that. The Cosmos is awesome! If you’re into what it does, you will not be disappointed. Very well constructed and sounds great.
