Yes your parents did struggle: Picture this, a young black girl who grew up during segregation. From the age of 12 years old, worked in the fields picking beans, strawberries, blueberries etc. I joined the military, got an ROTC scholarship. I got three degrees, retired after 28 years as a senior Air Force Officer. I went back to work for 15 additional years, and now living my best life in retirement. There were no handouts, just hard work and taking advantage of every opportunity that presented itself. Sometimes those opportunities weren’t my first choice. I had visions and goals, and never wanted to end up in the poverty that I faced as a child. This process a required a lot of sacrifices, self control and sound financial practices.
