Heading North USA: 9 Cumbres Pass to Creede
Our first section in Colorado put us into the Rockies proper.
The lack of snow melt meant we weren't going to be able to follow the CDT though the San Juan's. At this point even the most experienced hiker were bailing on the full San Juan loop.
Our alternate took us through the towns of South Fork and Creede after crossing another snow covered pass.

Heading North USA: 8 Ghost Ranch to Colorado Border
มุมมอง 3329 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Rejoining the CDT at Ghost Ranch after a couple of days rest we started the last section in New Mexico. New Mexico didn't want to release us from it's grip too easily. Temperatures plummeted freezing any standing water and fresh snow covered any trail or footprints making our escape slow and a little risky at times.
Heading North USA: 7 Cuba to Ghost Ranch
มุมมอง 15219 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
After some more time spent with fellow CDTers in Cuba we headed out knowing we could see the end of New Mexico in the near distance. Having had our first full snow experience and knowing there was snow on the hills above Cuba we confidently walked out of town early in the morning. Our confidence was rocked when we foolishly walked into knee deep snow after lunch. We battled through the "mashed ...

After resting and sending resupplies in Grants, the least walkable city in America, we headed towards Cuba. Our plan to summit Mount Taylor we scuttled by an incoming storm, which had a bit of a tail that had us spending a full day battling wind and snow. An experience we hadn't expected and were going to continue to have. Once the snow cleared it was back to the dry New Mexico we had been expe...
Heading North USA : 5 Pie Town to Grants
มุมมอง 20414 วันที่ผ่านมา
Leaving the yummy pie's of Pie Town we all but road walked to Grants NM. Long water carries and exposed trail including a large black lava field were the "highlights". Grants itself is an old Route 66 town that is in another Bust phase of it's boom and bust history. Here we got to spend some town time with some fellow CDTers and get a feeling of actually being part of a small trail community.
Heading North USA : 4 Snow Lake to Pie Town
มุมมอง 21214 วันที่ผ่านมา
Warming up as we left Snow Lake we managed to push our two biggest days hiking so far, including reaching 50km for the first time ever crossing the New Mexico high chaparral. Our destination, Pie Town, lived up to it's name with quality pie, even if our accents might have confused the staff on portion size.
Heading North USA : 3 Silver City to Snow Lake
มุมมอง 36321 วันที่ผ่านมา
The trail flips the switch as we leave the dry New Mexico desert and head into the Gila River. The Gila was showing signs of it's flow dropping, but in fact rose while we battled it. If we hadn't crossed paths with our new friend Paul as we reached the river we would have been road walking not river walking.

Hi Tony and Elka Just wondering if you have any details regarding your food planning listed somewhere. Really liked your TA series and would love to hear more from you about your planning logistics. The food planning very much appeals to our preference as hikers. Planning to do TA in 2026. The question is SoBo or NoBo Cheers Stevie and Nics❤

    • @itstonz
      @itstonz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi guys, glad you enjoy our wee adventures. We don’t have anything written down logistically wise, but are more that happy to help a little. We went NOBO because it was easier to get there from home in Christchurch and we were starting later. If you are planning on doing the full trail most pick SOBO, it allows you get get a bit fit on the slightly easier Nth Island and logistics is easier too. You will be around more people and going town to town easier. South Island is the better part of the trail (I’m not just saying that because it’s my home). We noticed more road walking in the North and less highlights. If you are keen on just South Island I’d go NOBO. You get to build into it a bit and hit the Richmond’s fully trail fit which helps the enjoyment. We sent food boxes (going NOBO) to Arthurs Pass, Boyle River Outdoor Centre, St Armurd and Matahika Outdoor Centre just after the Tararua Range in North Island. We were happy with our NOBO decision, but I think we’d probably do it SOBO if we went again so as to finish on South Island. We did do it during the border closure so the number of people was way down. The only thing that might change our mind is that you’ll be in a big bubble going SOBO where as NOBO you’ll potentially pass through said bubble. I hope this helped a little. Excited for you adventure. Cheers Elkie and Tony

Interesting to see the changes since I did that section. Looks like a big flood went through Ellery Big Hole, and some of those trees may not survive. Also, trail finding around Rocky Gully was tough at the time after a fire wiped out all the markers, and the track wasn't easy to follow over the rocky ground. I saw that one guy had turned back after spending 13 hours trying to get from Ellery to Rocky Gully. Nice to have some easy flat walking for you, though.
