    Hi there. I'm sure I saw you buying that set at GETS! I remember thinking, "That's a good-looking set. If they don't buy it, then I'll have a look." Frankly, I think you've done far more with it than I would have done. BTW, what was the name of the company from which you bought the 2nd batch of motors?

    Can't remember which kit it was i got, not Horns and Whistles i know. Looks to be the same motor. I took mine apart and found theyre cheap and nasty motors. Since then I've stuck to tinkering the original ringfields to work as well as they can. Can assure you that the old mechanism works just as well as the CD motor, and has more torque. Since the CD kit burned out on me (running a rake of 3 coaches at about 3V) I've never thrown out the old stuff! Have seen original Ringfields with decoders working ok before, not sure which chip though as I Know some chips just won't take more than 200mA. The loco locking up as it goes can be fixed with some cleaning and oiling (usually gets anything from this period going). It'll also help performance. Really nice job, sounds great. All the best Will

      @@davescustomconversions there's a number of minute tolerances in build quality (I've found mid 80s is worst). The ones of the late 70s and mid 90s onwards are always well built. Things like the commutator segments not being flush (the plates curl up at the end and effectively lathe the brushes, making running crap). When you can sort those sort of little issues you can have absolutely brilliant runners. Have read from a few idiots before that 'no lubrication is necessary'. Look forward to seeing how you overhaul them. All the best Will

  • @michaelramsey82

    I wonder why these didn't use radio control, like many larger scale live steamers do? The receiver could run from the same track power that heats the water (presumably stepped down to 5V with a voltage regulator), and use micro servos to control the valves. Seems like that would allow for much more precise real-time control.

  • @ModelTrainsTV
    @ModelTrainsTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see you are getting the hang of it Dave but I can see your biggest problem trying to get it to go slow is the very tight curves quickly followed by the long straight. The '5 flick lag' (at one second apart) means you will never have time to power up to overcome the drag of the curves and power down to take the minimum drag straight. These things are so like the original that they really need a big layout with big radius curves to get the best out of them. The OO Live Steam Roadshow is 16' x 8' and that's about the minimum to realistically run OO Live Steam. Keep posting the vids. Great fun to watch. Adrian

    • @davescustomconversions
      @davescustomconversions 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adrian, thanks for the encouragement, you and the club have been most helpful. this is simply a test layout on the dining room table. it's radius 4 curves rather than the r3s that came with the set. the plan is to build a layout in the new shed, it'll be 12foot by 32 foot, but some of that space will need to be modeling workshop for the "DavesCustomConversions" side of things. But i'm also jolly tempted to build a garden railway for those nice sunny days!

  • @AndysShed
    @AndysShed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had exactly this problem too. My setup used the Lais dcc decoder supplied by The Widget Shed (via E-Bay) and a DCC Concepts heavy duty stay alive purchased direct from them. I found a number of problems, not just this one. 1. When the loco is removed from the track it starts up, exactly as shown in this video. 2. When the stay alive kicks in on insulated track sections it goes at a set (fast) speed and only in one direction. Eg, if the loco is going forwards slowly, when it comes to the dead section it suddenly speeds up. However if the loco is going backwards slowly, when it gets to the dead section it suddenly shoots off backwards to where it came from until the capacitors discharge and it then sets off back towards the dead section again! All of this only works with CV29 set to 6. If you set it to 2 (one of the settings that disables DC running) then it completely bricks the stay alive and the loco behaves like it's not fitted. Also programming sometimes becomes impossible with the stay alive connected. I've had a number of conversations with the guys at DCC Concepts and they confirmed what I thought, in that the stay alive unit is just a power bank and incapable of changing direction or speed. That is all down to the programming of the DCC decoder. So the concensus is (as others here have said) that the Lais DCC decoder is not suitable for use with a stay alive. This is unless there is a secret setting to CV29 that would solve the problem.

    • @MOTOSTAN
      @MOTOSTAN 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I tried everything still no progress. I believe it is just bad firmware in those decoders, I took off one of those heat shrinks to take a look at the decoder and stay alive ( black and blue wires) are soldered behind the bridge rectifier circuit so it should (like you mention ) work as a power bank. When decoder set to cv 29 with dc support will just switch to dc mode and keep turning the motor till capacitor empties ( direction of training is determined by motor wires ) . So I believe that as soon as the square wave of dcc is no longer present decoder stops( or switch to dc mode depending on cv29). firmware most likely missing one line of code ( something like " when square wave is missing remember the last settings for 5 seconds before switching to dc ) and that would fix this issue

    • @ras666
      @ras666 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @carpandrei7493
    @carpandrei7493 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm... interesting problem. What capacitors have you used for the stay alive? I have some ideas as to what could cause the behavior, but to validate them I need to understand your setup. Also, what happens if you apply a little pressure on one of the driven wheels (with a finger, let's say) while you pick-up the model and the motor start to run?

      Hi Dazza, 10 car APT is made up of 3 old Hornby sets with "cut-and-shut" coaches, i have 2 buffet cars to add but not finished them yet. I'll need a bigger layout for a 12 car set! I made my own lighting boards, i lit the coaches too but didn't have them on in this video as they are a bit bright! The two power cars are running "CD" drive motos in the original ringfield frames. Think i've got another video all about those! They run nice but it's taken a while to get them to run in and match each other. Soundwise, 3 chips from "Legomanbiffo" were used. A Loksound v3.5 in each driving cab and one in a power car. The Loksound v3.5 doesn't give much spec for running big bassy speakers (like those i've fitted in the HST) but it's good enough for an electric train that doesn't need a bassy speaker. The horns and a few other sounds are original recordings from the only surviving APT-E up in Crewe. HST = 2x ESU Loksound v4.0 with 3 watt bass speaker (one in each end car) APT = 3x ESU Loksound v3.5 with 1 watt speaker (one in each driving car and power car) DMU = 1x ESU Loksound yet to be fitted, will be another v3.5 but with experimental speakers. Class 08 if anyone spotted it at the end... Zimo MX645R with sugar lump speaker and tons of stay alive caps! Hope this helps! Dave
