Hero vs. Villain - Is the Environment Agency worth our fishing licence cost?
มุมมอง 2642 ปีที่แล้ว
Do we increasingly live in a society where we define ourselves by what divides rather than unites? Politics. The environment. Nationality. Sexuality. Race. Social mores. I could go on. And on. But surely fishing is the last redoubt where division is firmly left outside the door? In most respects I hope, and think, that is true. Except on stocking. There are increasingly two tribes. The stockers...

    I was interested to hear from Simon that stocking became common policy on chalk streams in the 1830s , and his prediction as to the size of fish that would become the norm in chalk streams if stocking was stopped. That section reinforced how lucky we are in Devon to be able to fish for wild brown and sea trout.

    As an angler and long time member of a fishing club I have had some very negative experiences with the EA in recent times. I think we have to now assume that our licence fee has gone the way of road tax, in other words, very little of our money will ever go on rivers again, if indeed it ever did. The EA are also becoming an anti-angling organisation, prioritising issues like beavers, abstraction and sewage disposal over the welfare of our rivers and their inhabitants. If you look at the wider picture, the entire experience of Borough and County Councils and government organisations is that they mostly now exist for their own benefit. They continuously complain about funding cuts, but what is the point of having a public body which has just enough cash to pay their own wages and pension contributions, but not enough to do what they are supposed to exist to do. I agree totally that all river users should pay for the privilege (and that money should be used exclusively for rivers) and if the EA should be replaced with an organisation which is willing and able to take on polluters and abstracters.

    Angler and historian in the States here. Always interesting talks, thank you. My studies on the dry fly extended to well before Halford years ago. I thought that James Ogden and David Foster were always in contention for winning the development of the dry fly first trophy. The only reason one cannot be chosen over the other is that Ogden published “Ogden on Fly Tying” in 1879 as a complete original manuscript, while David Foster’s sons published “The Scientific Angler” in 1882 (American Edition 1883) from a collection of previous articles dating back to the 1840’s. Most of the historical info I have is that Foster is the first angler to lay out a system of dry fly fishing. However, Ogden clearly and ‘humbly’ writes on page iii in the preface of ‘Ogden on Fly Tying’, “It is well known that I am the inventor of Floating Flies, the Seat Basket, and the Spring Folding Landing Net”. How can you argue with that? For the money though, my bet goes with David Foster for the first codification of a system of dry fly fishing. I wonder why?

    • @simoncooper4093
      @simoncooper4093 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Phil: yes, you are of course correct. Halford didn't invent the dry fly as nor did Ogden or Foster really for that matter; are sometime many thousands of years distant. It is fascinating stuff how it has evolved to where we are today. As someone once said to me about marketing: there is no such thing as new ideas. Just old ones reworked better. Halford gets the plaudits but many other deserve credit. Hope all is well with you. Catch up next time. Simon

    Hi Simon, These conversations are fabulous, thank you for putting them out. As a fairly recent convert to fly fishing after a lifetime of coarse angling, it is refreshing to hear an honest conversation about fish welfare and social media. Much is made of fish welfare in the coarse/carp community with talk of unhooking mats and retention slings. However, I believe that in many cases, it is merely lip service to guard against scrutiny from the wider population, especially with the hyper-commercialisation and wide appeal of carp fishing in the modern day. I have always found it sad and frustrating to see the way our quarry are treated by anglers and especially, the length of time fish are kept out of the water, often being dropped or damaged and I fully agree with Charles with regards to his point about fishing for your own happiness rather than for the plaudits received from a nice picture on social media.

    No other comments here, it’s not a question of inferior, in this country the rainbow is almost always a tame over fed fat lump of lard with no brain, no comparison with wild rainbows in USA which would be great. I would encourage people to fish for wild brown trout, and encourage fisheries to stop stocking which is bad for the wild fish and part of wrecking our streams and rivers. Tame rainbows are fine in lakes or reservoirs , not in rivers .

    So I rock up on your river beat looking for all the world like a fly fisher. Getting to the water, I take out a 4 meter telescopic pole, to which I’d attached a small float, cocked by some bulk shot under which are 3 well-known imitative flies. I wade out and trot the flies at dead drift speed in all the likely places. They are proper flies, but is it fly fishing?
