What If We Went All In On Making Art In 2025: Reflections and Plans with Katie & Ilana
This past year has felt like a total sprint-so much has happened, and it flew by in the blink of an eye.
In this episode, we’re hitting pause to reflect on the highlights, the hiccups, and how we’ve grown as creatives and entrepreneurs. We’re sharing the moments that made us feel on top of the world, the challenges that tested our limits, and the lessons we’ve learned about chasing creative fulfillment (and why it’s so important).
We also talk about the art of pitching yourself (because waiting for opportunities? Not our vibe), why we’re rethinking success, and how our goals have evolved to better reflect who we are now.
If you’ve ever felt stuck trying to balance creativity and business, or you’re just looking for a little inspiration to reignite your passion, we’ve got you. Let’s dive into a year of growth, self-discovery, and a few laughs along the way.

If I send my artwork to a company, what keeps them from just using it and claiming it as their own? Or finding someone that can make it for them (a friend or whatever) and then they’ve essentially just stolen my artwork?
Filing for copyright is the first way to protect yourself from this! You should also have a contract with the company that lays out exactly how they can use your artwork. We have contract templates available for purchase here: goodtype.us/contract-kit
Love your videos! Just found you and am binge watching! What a fantastic cache of great info! No crap in sight 😅❤
so glad you're enjoying it! We're stoked for season 2!
Photoshop is still bad at dithering the gradients, gotta do that manually to avoid color banding during printing.
this worked well in Illustrator! Couldn't believe it was right under my fingertips this whole time!
I'm gonna add Skullcrushers to my workout routine - or start a new work out sensation
we won't be in the corner filming you ;)
Except for starting out, it is difficult to afford an attorney and a CPA….
Expenses definitely add up, but it'll cost you more if you do something wrong when it comes to taxes or legalese. We recommend hiring a CPA to do your taxes if you can, which should be a once a year fee. A lawyer you could do an initial consult with, and build a connection so that if you ever need a lawyer you have an existing relationship. There's tons of free info on this platform you can tap into until you're able to invest in these services. It's a tough call when starting out because it's either spending the time, or spending the money.
LOVE IT!!! GOOOOOO HOOD SISTERS!!!! :)
They're pretty fantastic!!
woot woot!
I am scared to go to an Agent but what are your guidelines ?
Definitely trust your gut. It's not for everyone, and it certainly isn't a one-way ticket to a successful art career. If you have too many projects to manage in the licensing space, it might be a good idea to look into it to figure out if you think it's right for you personally.
Thanks for the informative video😍👏.....I think BTC and ETH are more likely to retest resistance on the upside and then head lower. But as always, the situation changes every day and all we can do is trade responsibly, monitor the markets and re-evaluate our strategies frequently. I want to thank you, Bronwen Michael, for giving me education on cryptocurrencies because I have comfortably made 9.7 BTC...✊✊✊✊✊
Please how should I do this, I am still new to investment trading and how can I make money?🙏

A lot of great advice and information, thank you.
Fun interview. Thanks!
Hello My husband paint a lot of landscapes pictures is art licensing worth a shot??
How do you go about setting up a contract? Do you have templates available or more information? I’d be willing to buy😊
we sure do! we worked with a copyright attorney to put these together and there's videos that accompany them to make sure you understand all the terms! goodtype.us/contract-kit
Do you get upfront money for licensing or only royalties later once contract begins?
There's a few ways you can get paid, it all depends on the contract & client. I prefer getting an upfront fee + royalties, but have found just royalties to be very common.
@@Goodtype thanks so much.
How many greeting cards do you suggest? And what retailers do you target?
I'd suggest having at least 15 pieces to start your portfolio. The companies you target should be the ones that feel aligned with your work and message - to find them you can start by shopping around and making a list of companies you'd like to work with!
@Goodtype thank you and congrats!
@@Goodtype I meant to ask also. How does one price the cards at a wholesale price for retailers? Do you need a sku number? Or they handle that if they pick up your product?
@@1146g02 for art licensing, you wouldn't be pricing your work for wholesale, and you wouldn't need a SKU number. The client who licenses your work would be in charge of all of this, and you would be providing the artwork file only. Hope that helps!
Who at the company do you look for to contact with your work ready?
I love listening to how adhd creatives make it work for them (adhder also) because we are very good at it even though it can be challenging.
it's so true, it can really be a superpower!!
What about pdf portfolio as an attachment to email companies? Would that be needed together with a website link of art portfolio?
you can do that in addition to your website - I suggest keeping the PDF as more of a media kit/pitch for them and your website can host more of your work!
Thank you. I appreciate the conversation.
How do u get ur art on those products
we've got a free training for you here: goodtype.us/albp-webinar-register it's a longer form training that'll help you get started 👍
😂 thank you guys for keeping this crap real!!! 😂😂😂
real crap is where it's at!!
Thanks for the infor also have subscribed, My husband art is all over the place he paint and airbrush landscapes, abstract, peoples, space aliens/ships cars . I have look at many licensing companies and some of the artist, don't see anything that come close to what he do, he don't do any soft colors, have mix feeling
Having a signature style, or something that sets your husband apart is a good thing! Finding the RIGHT companies is really important. I suggest thinking about what type of products would be the best fit and start there!
Thanks for this video. This approach makes a whole lot more sense and seems much more realistic than a lot of TH-camrs and influencers are suggesting. You've got to start somewhere and until you've developed a reputation, you have to manage your expectations of what you're going to be paid.
So glad it resonates with you!
“Side piece” 😂😂😂 Laughing with you, not at you. ❤ thanks for this. Good insights. I’m 66. I could be dead before I get my first royalty check, have I got that right?? 😂😂😂
I truly hope that's not the case for you, but it definitely is a long game! You got this!
What canvas size would you recommend to start off with on procreate if we want to create artwork for more than one product? Like the example you gave for greeting cards and gift bag?
Greeting cards are usually 4x6 or 5x7 so you could start with those proportions, just go a bit bigger if you're using a raster based program and make sure you have enough resolution that you'll be able to scale up without losing the quality!
@@Goodtype Thanks for the reply. Would 2000x2000 pixels be a good canvas size on Procreate to design a gift bag?
@@HildaAguilar-d3f gift bags come in all shapes and sizes, but I would stick to traditional proportions instead of a square if you're doing a spot graphic versus a pattern.
@@Goodtype Thanks for the info.
I appreciate this about sharing content. It's been drilled into me by "experts" that you shouldn't consider your audience by posting things that aren't relevant to your business. To me it is because it shows who I am and what I'm about.
At the end of the day, everyone wants human connection. I love that you want to lead with that <3
First-time viewer and new subscriber. I enjoyed this so much! I was lucky enough to go to Adobe MAX in 2018 and 2019. Please PLEASE wear your masks when you’re in the auditorium with 16,000 attendees from all over the world, as well as in a class. In 2019 I’m pretty sure I came with Covid before it blew up in January 2020. Never been so sick in my life. That said, have a BLAST, and don’t miss the afternoon snack tables! I’m going to watch more of your vids now. ❤❤❤
We're excited for the snacks, and we're excited that you're here! Thanks for tuning in!
Love hearing the behind the scenes thoughts and experiences! Hardly anyone shares how hard it is to run a business, while constantly having to pivot, tweak things, fail, and try again. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for listening! We can't wait to take you along this journey with us and continue to share behind the curtain.
Do I need to have a portfolio to get started?
You do! That's the best way for buyers to be able to see what work you have available that they can license. We have a free portfolio builder if you need help getting started!
One more question can you make paintings and compile them in Photoshop? What if the final is created as say a collage in Photoshop?
as long as the collage is made up of all your own original art, that would be fine. Most fine artists bring their work into photoshop to adjust colors or clean up anything before submitting it for licensing.
@@Goodtype Thanks for your replies!
Can you send the same art to all agencies? I feel like it would be pointless to wait for someone to respond since it can take so long
you can, but we recommend being more strategic about which art you send to each company. You could send out the same art to several companies that don't have competitive products. That way if more than one person wants to license it, you can stack them for more earning potential.
You guys are amazing and I’m so grateful you shared your feelings and the reality of running a business. Wishing you both the best with your plan and look forward to seeing how it all goes. Here’s to no more Sunday scaries.
thank you so much! we're really excited about this new chapter, and Sundays being more fun!
excited for you guys! I appreciate your honesty and love listening to the back and forth
Thank you so much! We're really excited about this, and I'm glad we were able to talk about this candidly on the episode. PS If you leave a review on Apple podcasts we pick one person each month to giveaway some goodtype swag to!
I'm excited to see how this goes for you guys! I've been in such a creative rut this year, and I feel like I'm almost having to start over since it's been so long since I've actually consistently designed anything. I can't wait to see what you guys make ✨
We're excited for you too Jordyn! It's so easy to fall into a rut especially when we're juggling so many things and being thrown so much information so quickly. We're excited and we'll be doing it all alongside you!
Katie and Ilana thank you for sharing where you are at. Your honesty is so encouraging I relate to a lot of what you shared. I'm working on a side quest with a business partner too and it IS so tricky to find that balance that feels good between art and business. It's not easy to be vulnerable about what your struggles are when you also are in a teacher/leading position. Change is so unsettling for sure - you are both so brave and I can feel how much you care 🤍 Funny how easy it can be to put our own mental health and happiness on the back burner. The entrepreneurship world tends to expect sacrifice of your soul in exchange for achievement. My biz partner and I were just talking about that this week - wanting to set out core values and non negotiables in stone so we only accept things that are a good fit. And the extra pressure from neurodivergence is sooo real. Sorry not sorry for the novel I got a lot out of this conversation thanks for hitting that button 🤍🤍
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm so glad you have that line of communication with your partner, it's so important to be able to lean on each other and it allows you to create a sustainable relationship & business. Excited for you!
I guess I misunderstood Art licensing…is it possible to reach out on your own to license the art you make to agencies (not using an agent)who license art, or do those agencies tell you the type of art to make and the volume to produce as well?
Yes, you can totally reach out on your own without an agent! The client who is buying your art will handle the production side of bringing the products to life. Your job is just to make great art that will work great on a product. Does that help?
@@katiejohnson5158 Yes, that helps me greatly. This is new to me and I am so grateful for this video and the information you’ve shared.
This was so helpful. Why is this underrated
so glad you found it helpful!
Hi, what's the process of how to reach out to companies that would be interested in our creations? Do we check store websites and hopefully find their email info? Thanx!
great question! You can head over to our masterclass to learn more about this process! I'll add it to the list of video ideas too! goodtype.us/albp-webinar-register
I was wondering what size canvas I should work with for greeting cards. If you think it might be a good design for more than a greeting card do you work in a larger size? What size if so? Thank you!
Hi! We typically use a 5x7 inch ratio for cards in the USA. Then we'll either work in 300 dpi (100% print size) or even 600 dpi (which is 200% of print size). 600 dpi will make sure your art is big enough if a buyer were to want to use your art for an art print instead...or maybe a tote bag or gift bag. That size will be pretty safe for most scenarios!
Really enjoyed this one! I’ve followed Casey for a couple years and she is so great. I’m a graphic designer and illustrator who loves books and has been wanting to pivot into publishing for some time but it’s definitely very niche and quite intimidating!! But this was inspiring 🙏🏼
isn't she the best!? If you want to learn more you don't want to miss the kernference light - casey will be sharing more about the topic, and you can also check out "Artist to Author" goodtype.us/artist-to-author
@@Goodtype I’ll check it out, thank you 😊
Thank you for making this video
YES PLEASE on the podcast on being a working parent!!!!
We've added it to the list!
Did anyone stole your work and put it on an item to sell? Or what would you do if it would happen? (Not just the exact same image, but for example a n almost identical copy of your work).
Filing for copyright protection on your art is really important incase this ever happens to you. You can definitely send a cease and desist too and get a lawyer involved as needed, but without filing for copyright you won't have a case to bring them to court. Protect your work and only work with partners that you feel confident in!
Hi there found your video very helpful I have just started my career as a graphic designer at times it is very confusing figuring out pricing you guys are a very big inspiration to me I can not thank you guys enough!
So glad you found it helpful, you got this!
I do pencil portraits and the PTA mini van mom is literally all my clients. Great advice thanks!!
there's something for everyone!!
Art agents get 50% of your income. Galleries get 50% of your income as well. The government gets 50%++ (here where Iive) of you’re income. Happy success hashahaha
it is rough out there!
@@Goodtype That is rough. Let's say a $100 retail item you sell to a gallery for $50. They gross $50 profit. You gross $50 as the artist. $25 off the top to agent. (I assume they are not getting profit off the retail but the wholesale price). That leaves you the artist $25. Let's assume 50% for overhead like materials, lights, rent etc. that are business deductible. That leaves $12.50 net profit. Now pay Uncle Sam his 25% for income tax and 15% self-employment tax and you are left with a whopping $7.50. That makes it pretty rough indeed.
@@jamesspiroff9117 you definitely have to work backward so you aren't left with $7.50. You have to price your work considering all of those expenses so you aren't left with pennies.
Oh wow. This took place before Crop.
you caught us! We've been batching content, can you keep our secret safe? ;) Work smarter, not harder (especially in the summer!)
@@Goodtype oops!
i have a question about the kill fee - it sounds like you get half in the deposit, and then if the project gets cancelled you still get the full payout anyway as if the project was completed, is that right?
You wouldn't be paid in full if the project was terminated, but you should receive some payment. There's no standard rate, but you definitely want to include one in your contract to make sure you're paid for everything you've done in addition to the opportunities missed since you were booked out and now need to find a new client to make up for that lost income. You could also add to your contract that the deposit is non-refundable, regardless if the project canceled. If you want to see how we handle this in our contracts you can check out our templates: goodtype.us/contract-kit
