I was part of the 1985 intake Alpha company Kpl Jonker and Lt Heyns, what a great time to have been a teenager with a weapon and trained to be a man!

Looks like fun but it was PURE hell Was a savage time Run all day and March in the rain at night I regret not doing better in hindsight but as an 18 year old I just didn’t get it Did my 2 years and did patrols along the Ruacana river. I still have no idea what the point was. Probably I’ll never know. It was chaos….senseless I really didn’t like it at all. I still climb under my bed if there’s loud bangs in my area. 🤷

Interestingly, a Young Gary Teichmann appears at 7;24 in this video. I wonder if he aspired to be captain of the Springbok Rugby team at this stage of his life? I was in the January 1987 intake. Foxtrot 2 with Cpl. van den Berg. Although training was tough and I would not want to go through it again. I really enjoyed my time in the SA Army. I wouldn't change my experiences there for anything.

The blue berets beat the parabats as the fittest unit the one year. It was in the 80s, and I always wondered how they were treated when they got back to Tempe by their training staff, poor guys.

Sad but this school also produced Eugene DeCock and many Vlakplass killers...sad but only a great man like Nelson Mandela used the truth and reconciliation commission to heal his country after ending Apartheid. But the SADF was a mighty figting and intelligence unit...

July 1979 intake at 6SAI and transferred to 11 Commando. When we arrived there, they'd all left for the Border. The base then became a training base for Intelligence and Burgersake. My sergeant was Charlie Laubsher who later became Sgt Maj of the Army. I remember RSM Blignaut and our Coy CO Maj Bat Nel. I cleared out in Jul 1981.

Genuine question. I spent several years in SA as a child in the 1970s. We lived in the Cape. I only every heard English spoken, and at school everything was in English. I notice in most documentaries about the SADF the main language is Afrikaans. What would happen if you turned up for your National Service unable to speak Afrikaans?

Those early days in the Mag where you didn't have a clue, just got pushed from one bewildering happening to the other. The blankets on the tables... MAGS NOMMER! Every 5 minutes: 8662_ _ _ _BG... I'll never forget that number. One second you were so lonely, the next second there were too many people around you. And first phase Basics hadn't even started yet.

After finishing "Inligting course" then off to Siffdrif (Smutsdrift) then to Jam Pomp stasie (Ammo depo at Jn Kemp Dorp) and then off to Homelands and spend 1982 in Giyani ( Kremetart) I still have my flashes and my Jakkals kop

I was a medic at SAINTS from Nov '85 to early '87. Was there the day that the Samil overturned just before the main gate. One of the worst days of my life. Other than that, I enjoyed it to have been in such a prestigous unit. My favorite PF was S/Major Kevin Ridden. Spoke to him on Facebook a couple of years ago.

SA and Rhodesia were to good for the international banker maffia and had to go, they destroyed everything unfortunately, now the whole west is going down the same way.

Ja no impressed with the Army Intel boys (Always thought they were a bunch of slapgats) almost as skerp as Infantry (4/8 SAI) but not quite!!??😂

More waste of time stuf lauded as courage. I wasted 2 years in SADF Infantry. What good did it do us? Just prolonged the agony. On top of it, we were treated like dirt by imbeciles with sub 90 IQ's. No fond memories of the SADF.
