How can I use biochar with bokashi?
Biochar is a great additive to your soil. It’s basically the same concept as terra preta from the amazon, and improves soil structure and long-term fertility. Biochar needs to be charged with nitrogen before going into the ground, or it will steal nutrients from your plants. Bokashi juice is a good option for this - give it a try! /Jenny #bokashiworld #biochar #bokashi #terrapreta #charcoal #li...
Here’s how to avoid maggots in your bokashi compost!
Maggots are disgusting but they’re not dangerous. They occur when flies lay eggs on your food waste before it goes in the bokashi bin. Classic during barbeque/grill season! Here I share a few tips how to deal with them - and avoid them in future. /Jenny #bokashiworld #bokashi #maggots #flies #foodwaste #soil #compost
Ashes are great in the garden. But not with bokashi!
Can you put ashes in your bokashi bucket? Or mix them with bokashi in a soil factory? No! Bokashi microbes don’t like ashes. Spread them directly in your garden instead - good source of potassium for roses and berries. /Jenny #bokashiworld #bokashi #ashes #microbes #homegardening #effectivemicroorganisms #biochar
How do you activate EM on a really big scale?
Activating EM can be done on a large or small scale, at home in the kitchen or in a much bigger scale using IBC tanks if you have a farm or market garden. Here are some important things to think of. (Note that all temperatures are celcius, I’m in Europe!) /Jenny #bokashiworld #EMA #activatedEM #Microferm #soilrevolution #effectivemicroorgamisms
Activating EM at home, it’s easy!
Getting EM into your garden is worth gold. And if you activate the EM yourself it’s very affordable. You just need 50 ml each of EM-1 and molasses to make a liter of activated EM (EMA) and that is in turn diluted into 100 liters of water ready to use in your garden. It’s actually really easy, here I explain how. /Jenny #bokashiworld #EMA #EMAS #microferm #bokashi #soilfertility #organicgardenin...
Which microbes are in EM and what do they do?
Genuine EM is an amazing product, made of a specific consortium of beneficial bacteria and fungus. We can activate EM1 using molasses and water, but here we talk about the microbes in EM and what they do. /Jenny #bokashiworld #EM #EffectiveMicroorganisms #beneficialbacteria EMROJapan #EM1
What is activated EM and how do I use it?
EM goes under a lot of names and here I explain what they all are and how to use them. I always use original EM-1 from EMRO Japan, as this has all the microbe groups and is what the research is based on. It sounds complex but it’s not! /Jenny #bokashiworld #bokashi #EM #EM1 #EffectiveMicroorganisms #EMA #EMActive #Microferm #beneficialmicroorganisms #microbes
Dairy products in the bokashi bucket?
Many bokashi instructions say not to put dairy products in the bucket. Actually it’s no problem as long as they are solid. Any liquids should go down the sink. Some extra bokashi bran is always a good idea for food scraps that are high in protein or fat. And as much as possible, layer with other types of food waste. Easy! /Jenny #bokashiworld #bokashi #dairy #cheese #milk #bokashibran #organicw...
Yes, you can add fish bones to your bokashi!
Try it and see, you might be surprised! Fish bones and skin are full of good nutrients for your plants, and handled correctly they won’t cause any problems. Here’s a few tips to make it easier! /Jenny #bokashiworld #bokashi #fish #fishbones #foodwaste #organicwasteisnottrash #organicsoil #nutrients
Why don't nutrients wash away in the soil?
One of the reasons bokashi is so good for the soil is that it feeds the microbes. This is very different to chemical fertilisation where nutrients are directed at the plants and any unused nutrients are washed away. Bokashi nutrients stay in the soil until they are needed, thanks to a brilliant process called ”mineralisation”. Amazing, right? /Jenny #bokashiworld #bokashi #mineralisation #soils...
How does a tree use the carbon it makes to buy services?
Trees make a lot of carbon, they are basically sugar factories. Some of that they use to grow themselves, but a lot of it they use to buy services from microbes. Delivery of nutrients, for example! Listen up, it’s amazing how this works. /Jenny
How can we use trees to solve climate change?
We talk a lot about carbon - how can we reduce all those carbon gases in the atmosphere? Trees, grasses and plants are among the best solutions we have - we just need more of them! /Jenny #bokashiworld #trees #soil #carbon #atmosphericcarbon #soilcarbon #climatechange #carbonsequestration #soilrevolution
Making photosynthesis fun for kids!
The carbon cycle is who we are and why we are - but we really don’t get it! Here I share some ideas on how you can make it fun and meaningful for your kids. A game that they might just remember for ever! /Jenny
This is why we need more trees!
How does photosynthesis work? I mean, really? We all learn about it at school but its more important than we ever could imagine. It’s what makes the carbon cycle work. And that is one of the most important things we have! /Jenny
