Came out at Yatton
Lovely informative set of videos. Thoroughly enjoyed watching them. Thank you 😊
Excellent series. Thank you. 18:12 How anyone ever thought it a good idea to paint trains that screeching 'nails-down-a-blackboard' blue is beyond me. People had access to this vile blue right up to the 1960s, but they had the good taste not to use it - until then. This colour jumps out of the English landscape in the most grotesque manner.
Lodge Hill is Westbury-sub-Mendip. It was called Lodge Hill after a nearby hill so not to confuse it with Westbury (Wiltshire) more than Westbury on Trym in Bristol which did not have a station anyway.
I have cycled quite a bit of the route from Cheddar to Yatton. Hopefully more of it will become rideable, especially the stretch from Wells to Cheddar. There are three East-West rail corridors long defunct hereabouts. The S&D from Highbridge to Evercreech south and the North Somerset line from St Philips to Frome, via Clutton and Radstock, North of this line. Bits of the S&D branch from Bawdrip to Eddington Burtle are cyclable, so to the North Somerset from Brislington to Whitchurch.
ABSOLUTELY charming history !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, so sad it nearly all gone .
Wonderfull , interesting and historic . Thanks for posting .
Lodge Hill was the field centre for Bristol Grammar School for some years. I know ‘cos I was there.
Very enjoyable. My school used to own or rent Lodge Hill station for field trips and I have spent many nights sleeping there.
6:53 Not Westbury on Trym; W-o-T, but Westbury sub Mendip; W-s-M, NO! Not that one either. Well hail fellow, well met. Mr. Clare would be proud of me. Me too, I've spent a number of nights bunked down in the back room of the station building which I remember was always cold and slightly damp ~ even at the end of the summer term, even after the school bought it. Geography field trip to learn about Ox-bow lakes as I recall. Happy memories, thanks for sparking mime again. From one old bugger to another.
Thank you. Always interesting to see these old railway lines.
yeeep..back to selhust via peckham rye.
great document!
Didn’t the Strawberry line go through Whitchurch ?
Fantastic 😍 as an ex-pat, this makes my heart ache, although this England has passed into history. Still, an absolutely wonderful view of the old country, and a fabulous source for railway modelling
Absolutely invaluable for modelling purposes and a lovely look back to a world gone by. Thanks for posting!
I’ll be the one to say it… only goes as far as Blackfriars…
Me and my friend spent a night at wookey Station in the waiting room which was derelict but still intact the date was June 1971 our intention was to go strawberry picking and earn some extra cash we also spent a night in a haybarn near Draycott we had cheddar cheese and crusty bread to eat we never got round to picking any strawberries but it was an enjoyable experience for us both such fond memories
Is this train going through east dulwich??
Yes - the old dulwich hospital can be seen at 07:20
Almost sickening to see how much infrastructure was just 'swept away' to allow the motor car and polluting truck to take over - or just for it to become overgrown, not even a footpath. So many of these picturesque lines would now be perfect for heritage railways if they could be reopened but not at the expense of the high-speed line quotations for new lines. I could watch these kind of films all day - I know this area quite well (my sister lives in Cheddar) and it seems a waste for the cost of the original construction to be so easily disregarded and abandoned. There's room for replacement here - if the waste of money the Govt. oversees could be redirected in a productive way a lot of these links could be reinstated and the benefits would be many-fold. Many thanks for posting these 4 films. Valuable archive 👍
Wow
Did I miss parts 1 and 4? Thanks for sharing 😀
Wonderful archive, the Wells driver Harry Viles on redundancy transferred to Bristol Bath Road, quite a contrast. The Witham signalman was Tiny Wilcox, he was six foot six plus tall. The guard on the platform with the later style uniform was Westbury guard Bert Back, all first class railwaymen.
👍
This is fantastic. My only previous knowledge of this beautiful but not forgotten line was in print and by photos. This film has brought the line to life for me. The quality of archive film is excellent as is the audio. Most interesting to see Cheddar station and the vintage coaches and cars trying to get up Cheddar Gorge. Looks like the awful and depressing shanties and shops which now despoil the gorge have not yet arrived.
Was born November this year, turned 30 yesterday 🥳 I enjoyed this vid💯
Wonderful if sad film. Deadly combination of Tories, Marples and the idiots who voted for them did for this. Any footage of the line to Clevedon?
Check your facts, they're all at it then and still are now. All equally me first, ain't that right Barbara?
Thank you very much for this wonderful look at the history of the Strawberry line! As I plan on modeling the Yatton to Wells line (circa 1960-ish) in OO scale, it has given me a great insight as to what I can do to replicate this famous branch line.
This is London Bridge to Selhurst?
