Improvisation en style d'Alexandre Guilmant - David Briggs Salle d'Orgue, Maison M. Dupré, Meudon
Improvisation in the style of Alexandre Guilmant - David Briggs (rehearsal, 22nd November 2024) - Salle d'Orgue, Maison Marcel Dupré, Boulevard Anatole France, Meudon, Paris (Grand Orgue Cavaillé-Coll (1899, dans la Maison d’Alexandre Guilmant), Joseph Beuchet (1926), Jean-Claude Merouze (1979-present)
For me it was a massive and almost incomparable privilege to resonate with the spirit of Marcel Dupré for the last two days at Meudon, his home from 1926-1971, at the generous invitation of the current very kind owner, retired-pharmacist Monsieur Jean-Pierre Teboul and his charming wife Françoise. The organ is in great shape, thanks mainly to the peerless and almost-daily attention of the long-standing organ curator, Jean-Claude Merouze. To maintain such a huge instrument, with electrics from the 1930’s, is an incredible task. Thanks to the many cured leaks (over the past decade or so) and completely refurbished leather work, the organ is now in full voice, with plenty of air. Certainly in better health now than in the late Dupré years! Just imagine having this sound in your house 😎
WIth it’s multitude of sostenutos, Pedal Divide, General and Divisional pistons, this was truly a prototype organ (Console built in the USA, but nobody seemed to know quite by whom), and I can see exactly where Pierre Cochereau got all his ideas from, for Notre-Dame in the 1960/early 70’s.
The Salle d’Orgue was funded by Claude Johnson in 1926, as well as the electrification and enlargement by Joseph Beuchet. They scrupulously guarded the Cavaillé-Coll voicing of the original. Dupré knew how to surround himself with influential friends - Johnson was Chairman of Rolls-Royce, and a huge sponsor of Dupré - inviting him personally to play the Royal Albert Hall, for example.
Despite a couple of accidents due to electrical console fragilities, the concert went fairly well and was filmed and recorded in HD sound. More information soon ... watch this space!
I hope you enjoy this modest offering, in the style of Dupré’s teacher, Alexandre Guilmant, who first owned this instrument (in its original Cavaillé-Coll 1889 state) just round the corner in his Villa in Meudon (sadly demolished many years ago). This was truly a golden époque. I saw a photo of a Marcel Dupré concert in Detroit, in the 1920’s - with an audience of 10,000. We need make this happen again! And I sincerely believe the key is the art of IMPROVISATION.

Suite Brève (1947) - Jean Langlais, played by David Briggs at the Cathedral of St John the Divine, NYC. This is one of several pieces I took to my teacher Jean Langlais, during my course of twelve lessons at St Clotilde in 1985-86. I remember it as if yesterday. He was so precise but always so encouraging. He was a huge spirit with the most finely-attuned ear of anyone I've ever met. I. Grands ...

Prélude et Fugue improvisée - David Briggs aux Grandes Orgues Aristide Cavaillé-Coll de La Cathédrale de Luçon, Vendée, France. It was such a colossally joyful experience to re-establish contact with this truly great organ, last weekend, after a rather amazing gap of 47 years. Wonderful!!! Huge piece, great accomplishment. Even though tremolos and timpani are absent, it sounds great. Congratulations, hope to hear you live one day.

Too bad tourists don’t know what’s uptown! If they go northwest Central Park, they will see this place! St. Patrick’s cathedral southeast park, St. John divine northwest park.
Superb!
Beautifully done!
Awesome music from Boellmann and sound nice here in NYC too.
Thanx a lot for sharing! This year (2024) we're celebrating Bruckners 200. birthday, so i'm playing a shortened transcription from Vinzenz Goller (1937), which is only 11 minutes long.
We need this sublime resonance now more than ever. Wonderful and moving.
Are you still at St John’s?
Wonderful..Still looking forward to returning to the St Devine refurbished pip organ. SOON I hope. Robert California.
Wonderful improvisation, Mr. Briggs! Clearly a fabulous organ, that you have a deep history with. Did you play the Reger on it that you first heard? I love the unorganized look of those long throw drawknobs when you have only some drawn.
Thank you for sharing this. I'm always captivated by the sound journeys you take us on.
You did it beautifully, also showcasing the organ. The action is a bit atmospherically noisy but the brilliance of the flutes is still wonderful. The improvisation does remind me more of Duruflé's Suite than of Cocherau, which is of course also a compliment. All the best and keep enjoying!! Greetings from Rens, The Netherlands, currently in the Hautes Alpes, France
Love the bells .Extanct noise adds to the character . I love it G
Bravo!
Bravissimo!
The demanding Cochereau transcriptions. You have come on a bit since Heut’ triumphiret Gottes Sohn. Your Dad must have done much to encourage you - a wise man.
sounds very awesome!
Fantastic sound! Interesting how the facade doesn't face the church
He has had a great effect on your life I am sure . Love the bells .
Lovely tone and uplifting at the same time . Needed for my very dear Cousin Evadne an organist all my life who is under the weather at the moment Lives in Derbyshire. Thanks David
The first C-C I ever played (much earlier in the 70s than you, David!) It was an evil beast- but what a wonderful evil beast!! My truly pathetic efforts were very kindly commended by Andre Isoir, who was patiently waiting to practice for a recording (I felt very, very humble...)
Amazing!!!
B R A V O !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just love this piece. It rings bells but not necessarily in the right order (Eric Morcambe)
Thank you so much for playing this piece David. It is one I love with a passion. Am sure you needed a lie down afterwards and were suitably exhausted after this wonderful performance! Is there any chance at all you could play Maurice Duruflé's Choral Varié sur le thème du Veni Creator Op.4 - another staunch favourite of mine and perhaps in keeping with the conjuring of devout prayer that the piece Litanies brings??
Joué un peu trop vite à mon avis

I enjoyed your concert at Belmont-have you recorded the entirety of this piece?
Beautiful piece. It would be nice to hear what it sounds like on the von Beckerath organ.
Hopefully by Christmas the Skinner will be playable again. I really miss it! Thank You David!
The Zimbelstern… debatable
Great music. But, the glockenspiel is tiresome on the ears after a while.
Interesting take on this famous work by RVW - so well performed by both players
This is totally beyond my comprehension. How does this work? Twp minds and skills applied to - evolving ideas that somehow run in a syncretic direction? All I can do is enjoy the flow and that is actually enough.
🤩
The composer was never happy with anything he wrote - at least he didn't destroy this - one of the finest French toccs EVER ! (not that I can play it - thank you, David!)
Brilliant. The right organ for this type of music. I wish there were scores.
Restoration of the fine organ is excellent. It suffered a heart attack few years back, worthy "bypass" and recovery. WIDOR is a killer to play. Exponential ELEGANCE! It's rarely seen these days.
Thank you David. A splendid recording.
Superb!

MY heart rate went up listening to this!!

A very impressive transcription and performance!
