This project, based on landowner objectives is not as a stand alone project, a wildlife enhancement practice, but to improve livestock production on the farm. This would be the first step of a series of enhancements if wildlife habitat improvement were the goal.

In a previous video, we highlighted the prescribed burn on this project. Now it's time to thin the stand for optimal effect. I'm marking leave trees to demonstrate the correct spacing I am looking for. I then had a discussion in the woods with the cutter to make sure we are on the same page. Moving forward!!

Greenbriar is not fun to walk through, but deer sure do love to browse it in the summer.

Sometimes we use a drone to do some aerial recon while we are doing inventory for a management plan. This helps get a different perspective of various stands, or clues us in to phenomenon or recent activity that may have occurred after the last aerial photo released by USGS. Note the pine stand that we flew in close on. Stand was recently thinned and looking very good.

The conditions were perfect to pull off this burn. The head-fire will top kill small saplings and smaller while consuming existing fuel load before we add more with the first thinning to help the best pine grow and let a little light to the woodland floor to grow wildlife food.

We completed a glade thinning with hack & squirt back in 2019, and then did a prescribed burn in 2020. We completed the second burn this year 2023, and we expect very noticeable results this summer. Were excited.

Make the most out of those front shoulders. Nobody like to pick apart the front leg meat for the grinder. Instead, do this!

Recruiting young hunters like my son Michael encourages the management of important wetlands for ducks and other wildlife, and the tradition of duck hunting.

When we mark a timber sale, our goal is to make the timber stand better, increasing growth on quality crop trees, and increasing wildlife food and cover.
