Skinny bison & elks at Mammoth Yellowstone
We drove into Yellowstone on the north entrance from Gardiner, MT at 9 am this morning. After parking a skinny older female bison crossed in front of us and started eating the grass. Moments later, a small herd of elk also came to munch on the grass.
Good start to another great day at Yellowstone!

Forget roller coasters, San Francisco’s cable cars are the ride of your life

We spent 4 days in San Francisco and loved riding the cable cars. It was like a ride at an amusement park as I was hanging out with my hair blowing in the wind, bells ringing, tracks clattering on the city’s infamously steep heels. The cable car system in San Francisco invented by Andrew S. Hallidie built in 1873 is the only one left in the world that still works. These cable cars move by hold...

As a herpetologist, I can tell you that the American Crocodile (C. acutus) is notoriously timid and shy. They pose very little threat to humans. That doesn't mean you should mess with one, but they are extremely unlikely to attack a kayak.

The American crocodiles in Costa Rica and other areas in the region are indeed known man eaters. Look it up. There's been at least several people killed just in the past several years by American crocs down there, including a popular local surfer in the ocean, just off the beach, right next to where a freshwater river empties into it. Sure, they're not as dangerous or aggressive as Nile crocs or salties, but make no mistake, if an American croc is big enough & hungry enough, it WILL attack anything it perceives as prey. And night time is always worse. Of course I doubt the daytime kayakers in south Florida are in any real danger from American crocs.

There are American Crocs, Cuban crocs, and I think one or two dwarf species in central and south America. And I have heard there is a small population of Nile crocs that either escaped during a hurricane or were released by humans. Florida is trying to eradicate any found Niles, but the swamp is huge. And those are just the Crocs in the new world....also the Alligator and Caimans inhabit the Americas.

You didn't learn a damned thing in school. ( Or the public schools did a lousy job. ) There have ALWAYS been American crocodiles in south Florida, and they are indeed native to the area. They were hunted to near extinction even worse than the American alligator. As a matter of fact: south Florida is the ONLY place on Earth where alligators and crocodiles co-exist. Because they have been under federal protection for many years now, the American croc is making a comeback in south Florida. They are the same species as those found in central America, and they can grow to 17 feet long. In Costa Rica and surrounding areas, the American croc is a known man eater. Just in recent years, several people have been attacked & killed by American crocs down there.
