I moved to Aus in 2002, and I am sooo glad that I watched this show when it came out, and how chillingly accurate it portrayed my highschool experience!! It made it so much fun/funny!

It’s still crazy to me that this was shown in school and the “we can be heroes” one was actually shown for education 💀 I think it was an English assignment, probably about stereotypes so I think it’s fine.

Summer Heights High/Jonah is essentially the Australian Boondocks, it's racial humour and political satire with plenty of social commentary thrown in along with rap culture, celebrity references coming from perspective of an ethnically coloured naughty delinquent kid and a big minority cast, it shocks and offends because to the public it's just shock value racism. TV programs like this don't exist anymore, I have to remind myself these came out in the era of Chris Brown and Barrack Obama, they could get away with pushing it to their limits but today they'd get cancelled in a heartbeat thanks to the rise of LGBTQ and MeToo movements that's promoting ultra ideologies which prevents harsh topics being spread

It was SUPPOSED to be offensive. It was written this way to highlight the underlying racism still present in Australia at the time and which a lot of people turned a blind eye to. Chris Lilley shoved our ignorance right in our faces on purpose.

My channel has some of the early Mr G stuff from the Hamish & Andy show from 2003 (the character originated on the now-forgotten The Big Bite on channel 7) and some other Chris Lilley skits too. Unfortunately the res is terrible (I uploaded in it 2009 and used a cheap dvd recorder to record it) and I didn't manage to record all of it, but it's an interesting time capsule of Australian comedy from the 00's and with a look.

I had lunch with the actor who played Rodney, Stan Roach, in 2009. He said that when they shot the show, Rodney and Mr G were more combative but the show was edited into Rodney having a crush. Stan said he was surprised to see the dynamic between the two had changed when he watched the series for the first time.
