चाह नहीं, मैं सुरबाला के गहनों में गूँथा जाऊँ। चाह नहीं, प्रेमी-माला में बिंध प्यारी को ललचाऊँ ॥ चाह नहीं, सम्राटों के शव पर, हे हरि, डाला जाऊँ। चाह नहीं, देवों के सिर पर चढूँ, भाग्य पर इठलाऊँ ॥ मुझे तोड़ लेना वनमाली ! उस पथ में देना तुम फेंक ॥ मातृ-भूमि पर शीश चढ़ाने। जिस पथ जावें वीर अनेक ॥ ~ माखनलाल चतुर्वेदी माखनलाल चतुर्वेदी जी अपनी देशप्रेम की भावना को पुष्प की अभिलाषा के रूप में व्यक्त करते हुए कहते हैं कि मेरी इच्छा किसी देवबाला के आभूषणों में गूंथे जाने की नहीं है। मेरी इच्छा यह भी नहीं है कि मैं प्रेमियों को प्रसन्न करने के लिए प्रेमी द्वारा बनायी गयी माला में पिरोया जाऊँ और प्रेमिका के मन को आकर्षित करूं। हे प्रभु! न ही मेरी यह इच्छा है कि मैं बड़े-बड़े राजाओं के शवों पर चढ़कर सम्मान प्राप्त करूं। मेरी यह कामना भी नहीं है कि मैं देवताओं के सिर पर चढ़कर अपने भाग्य पर अभिमान करूं। भाव यह है कि इस प्रकार के किसी भी सम्मान को पुष्प अपने लिए निरर्थक समझता है। पुष्प उपवन के माली से प्रार्थना करता है कि हे माली! तुम मुझे तोड़कर उस मार्ग में डाल देना, जिस मार्ग से होकर अनेक राष्ट्र-भक्त वीर, मातृभूमि पर अपने प्राणों का बलिदान करने के लिए जा रहे हों। फूल उन वीरों की चरण-रज का स्पर्श पाकर भी अपने को धन्य मानेगा; क्योंकि उनके चरणों पर चढ़ना ही देश के बलिदानी वीरों के लिए उसकी सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि है।
