They definitely have. The medicine itself is greatly improved, but the care is greatly reduced. I was in the hospital a lot in the 80s. And then a couple times in the 00s. You have to bring a medically savy person with you now. 🙄

I thought that was a possibility, but I'm glad they only strongly hinted at it with the bite marks on his neck rather than being too on the nose with it. Vicky clearly doesn't understand the implication since she told Maggie that in the dream Barnabas was dead from an attack by some wild animal.

I know friends of mine that are in their late 60s and early 70s that refuse to watch D.S. because they were afraid of having nightmares. That is always going to be one of the possible side effects of watching a gothic or horror series. Heck, they're only nightmares, right? 😳😮😵‍💫😱😈👹👺💀

I watched faithfully until i had a nightmare, and never watched again.😅

I was 6 years old when I started watching Dark Shadows. I found it to be more spooky and intriguing than scary. I never had any nightmares from watching it. That's probably because I was used to watching old Universal, Hammer and other horror films on TV from as far back as I can remember. The only horror film that gave me a nightmare was "House On Haunted Hill" which after watching that on TV when I was five years old, I dreamed that I was in that house and the big chandelier was falling on me, but I awoke before it hit me. I didn't stop watching horror films and TV shows just because I had that nightmare. It's funny that the nightmare that scared me the most when I was a little kid happened when I was 4 years old, and during an afternoon nap I dreamed that I was Tweety Bird and Sylvester the Cat had caught me and was about to eat me. I woke up screaming and ran to my father who had just gotten home from work.

As I pointed out by my question above, this trope was used previously in DS in the case of Jeremiah Collins' ghost, so why be so surprised that it is used for Sam Evans' ghost? Dark Shadows does not always use this trope. According to the Dark Shadows Wiki: It is known that not all ghosts share the same traits and characteristics. Sometimes appearing in the form in which they died, they can appear wholly human or in a mist-like energy form devoid of human features. Often invisible, intangible and ephemeral, they are non-corporeal; they have no need to eat or sleep beyond brief periods of inactivity...Ghosts tend to adhere to the personalities and characteristics they had in life, often showing great beneficence and even some very malicious activity, behaving malevolent and very dangerous... It is known that most ghostly abilities are dependent on their access to ectoplasm, a paranormal substance that originates from all living things and which they can draw on to create such feats such as appearing and disappearing, gaining substance and causing light to violent poltergeist activity...They can even attain a degree of physical existence in the material world. Why not? Previously in this storyline, the ghost of Reverend Trask took physical form and was able to brick up Barnabas in the basement alcove and to capture Cassandra and tie her to a tree. This physical incarnation can usually only be maintained for a short time; their "clothing" and "attire" appearing as an outward extension of how they appeared in life, usually related to their native time periods. Depending on how powerful the spirit is, they can inflict physical harm on the living.

Ghosts often know things that they did not know in life. Sam's ghost seems to know about Barnabas' curse and what he did to Maggie when he says that in the case of Barnabas Collins perhaps death would be a blessing. Cassandra may have psychically communicated that detail of Vicky's dream to Sam's ghost and instructed him to tell her because she wants to cause Vicky to suffer by knowing that she will be the one to transfer the dream curse to Barnabas and she will be unable to stop herself from doing so. It is just like Angelique to want to torture both Barnabas and anyone who is a rival for his affection, both because of jealousy and because it will hurt Barnabas even more to see the object of his affection suffer.
