Looking at the series again... I feel like Light wasn't playing smartly, and was carried by luck (like Misa and Rem joining him or catching Naomi before she said anything). It was a wrong move to make Misa send the message that she's not going to look for Kira anymore, and Light should've been smart enough to know that's a move that endangers him more. It was in effect saying "I already found Kira", so now he's under more surveillance. Most of the moves Light did in the series feel like ones that are meant to outsmart just the police (or even the viewer), not L.
