    Not sure if you knew but the one you showed at the beggining is based of the wallet used by the main character in an anime named Naruto, well the character is named Naruto too, I love that show and wanted to make his little pouch as it seemed like a simple project, thank you so much for the pattern!

    So. It seems the dimensions are off here. If you only cut the width 1/2” wider then the book. You eat all of that up doing the initial stitching with 1/4” seam allowance. But then when you make the front flap you have to fold over and sew down - now it makes the flap too narrow for the book - am I doing something wrong?

      @TheLiterarySewist 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I get what you’re saying. It’s been a minute since I personally walked through the steps but in watching back, the measurements match what I’m doing. So I don’t know how to explain it. 😅 It worked though. I had made three of these before the one in the video and they were all the same process. I’ll admit it is a snug fit to the book. You are of course welcome to make yours a little wider. I’ve had some people use a 3/4” width with the 1/4” SA so it’s a little easier.

    I love the tutorial except for the fact it doesn't mention anywhere how much material or how long to cut the length of fabric. I have tried a couple of different ways and can't seem to get the right proportion. Can you give me some help?

    • @TheLiterarySewist
      @TheLiterarySewist 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Gretchen. Sorry for the late response. There isn’t a set length of fabric. It all depends on the book you’re using. At 0:47 the first part of the tutorial shows how to determine the length you need. If it’s easier you could use a reliable measuring tape using the same steps to get the length you will need. I hope that helps!

    I’m so excited to make this. I’ve attempted to cut fabric out twice for this project and keep screwing up because I guess the math just isn’t adding up to me. My serger seems to be larger than yours is. it’s 12.6 inches long and 11 inches deep. I was going to cut the fabric 12.5 inches long but then I’m all screwed up on how big I need to cut the fabric for the bin. I’m just so lost. I wish the video or the instructions had a bit more details. 😓 Edit - looking at the measurements for the normal and smaller option makes me even more confused. None of it makes sense. The original size basic pieces are 4.5 inches longer than the width of the back. And for the small one it’s 6 inches larger.I’m even more confused than I was to begin with 😓 well, my sewing for the night has been cut short. I hate when my brain hurts when I’m trying to craft 😂 it’s a beautiful trim bin and I’d love to make one!

    • @TheLiterarySewist
      @TheLiterarySewist 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hate over thinking my projects! Take a deep breath and let me think this through for you. First, my catcher is the larger size but it doesn’t fully cover the entire length and width of my machine. It does sit comfortably under the feet on the base of the machine to hold it in place. Second, I went ahead and measured my machine for comparison. It’s 13.5” Deep and 13” Wide. So mine is actually slightly larger than yours. Which means the width is about 2.5” shorter than my machine’s width & about 5” shorter than the depth. So if you’re ok with it not covering the entire width, then you should be good to go with the larger size. However if you prefer to cover the entire body width and depth, I think 22”x12.5” for the backing and 11”x17” for the basket should do the trick. This will give you the larger and deeper basket. Keep in mind that 11” is the height of the basket & 22” is the length of the entire thing. Let me know if this makes sense to you. :-)

    Omg!!!!! I love this so much! I got a Baby Lock serger a few years back. It came with a trim bin that attached to the front of the serger that broke immediately. I had to purchase a Baby Lock “Serger Trim Bin” from the shop I bought it from. It’s so ugly. It’s a huge rectangle of plastic that your serger sits on and a tiny rectangle opening where you lock in place a clear thin plastic bag. Did it come with extra bags? Nope! Have I damaged the plastic bag? Somehow, no. Have I considered making a new bag that would sit inside this rectangle? Yes! While I was looking at my serger tonight I realized that no fabric would probably fit unless it was a chiffon. I accidentally found this video and I’m so glad I did! (Sorry, that was a long winded comment 😂). I cannot wait to make this! This has been added to my growing list of projects I want to work on!

    • @TheLiterarySewist
      @TheLiterarySewist 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The idea came from one I had with my very first serger and did not last long at all! So I totally get the “do I want to make something to fix it or replace it? Nah! Maybe later!” Vibes. 🤣🤣🤣

  • @jeniferalvarez2914
    @jeniferalvarez2914 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So cute! Where on earth did you find this fabric? All the tutorials I’ve found have been for skinny journals and I’m glad yours is for those of us who are readers! Have you tried the book jacket with elastic? I have two that I purchased and both have elastic and all the ones on Etsy that are adjustable use elastic. I’m wondering if your method is even better. Though, elastic is cheaper than fabric at .40 cents a yard. 😂

    • @TheLiterarySewist
      @TheLiterarySewist 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! It’s so hard to find ones for books that are what we actually have in mind. The fabric was from Joanna’s probably a decade ago! I had bought it to make my daughter a dress so this was leftovers. I haven’t tried this one with the elastic but it would totally work the same way!

      It’s close to the same idea, but only measure the amount you want to bring in. For example if it’s across the whole back and the distance from side to side is 14 in, that would be the amount you would use to make your calculations. Does that make sense? Then I would sew down one side, feed through, then sew down the other side.

    Thanks so much for this great idea, my sewing room has never been tidier! One thing I have changed is to use some scrap vinyl to make the back and the inner basket. This means that all scraps and cottons just slide in really easily and can be emptied without anything sticking to the sides. It’s so lovely my whole sewing group now have made at least one, sometimes two so each machine/serger has its own! Thanks again!
