What a great way to use media to benefit the public! The professor and the presenter both did the prgram well. This type of programs should be translated to the main languages and promoted more than the entertainment programs.

The Animal Welfare Bill currently on the Order Paper of Parliament and now the subject of the 2nd Reading is very much based on the draft Animal Welfare Bill prepared by the Law Commission of Sri Lanka and handed over to the President Mahinda Rajapakse in May 2006. The Law Commission started this process in February 2000 under the Chairmanship of Justice A.R. B. Amerasinghe. When he retired in 2004 Professor Lakshman Marasinghe took over the task as the new Chairman of the Law Commission. It was during the tenure of Lakshman Marasinghe as Chairman of the Law Commission that the Animal Welfare Bill was finally released and handed over to the President Mahinda Rajapakse in 2006. Professor Lakshman Marasinghe passed away on December 31, 2022 at the age of 88 years.

Animal Welfare Bill has been placed on the Order Paper of the Parliament. The 1st Reading of the Bill has been completed. The 2nd Reading of the Animal Welfare Bill commenced on 22nd of June, 2022 but the 2nd Reading has not yet ended. The debate in Parliament on this subject is yet to take place. The seven day period for public objections has now passed.
