The dial on the left is your upper tension and probably just needs to be left alone. The dial on the right is Stitch Width. I believe the stitch width selector only works with certain stitches but when doing a strait stitch it will move the needle left or right.

My brother machine is a little different but is one stitch length and one tension or one making your needle move positions?

To help with your photo lighting, since you are doing it on a desk at a window. Pickup a white trifold big or mini board from dollar tree/walmart. You setup the trifold closer to the edge of your desk/shooting area facing the window and your products. The white part will bounce the light back towards the window. It's a great cheap hack that I learned in photography class.

Here’s a quick tip for carrying those keychain boards. Once you pit everything on it, wrap the whole board in plastic wrap. TRUST me it works!
