I really wanted to see Yabushige confess the details of his deal with Ishido to Toranaga. Then knowing Ishido's plan to weild Yabushiges army against him. Toranaga would play into that. Give Yabushige his Army back to go to Osaka and let Ishido think he's got all the cards. Only for Yabushige to be the 5th general on the hilltop at Sekigahara. And just play off of his self serving and indecisive nature right up to the point where It seems Ishido's Leper General is taking the flank and routing Toranaga's forces. BAM Uncle Yabushige charges down the hill right then to counter attack and save Toranaga thus restoring his honor..... Hey It's just what we all wanted see play out

Suicide is sin in the Catholic faith but not in the Protestant faith. However nowadays the Roman Catholic Church has lessened it stand somewhat.

What is abuse now was not what was considered abuse in 1600. Buntaro just comes back from fighting for survival for 20 days and finds his wife living with a foreign man? But later Toranaga gets 49 days to mourn his son? Then he sees chemistry between them and she probably refused his advance later. She got off easy to be honest. That whole scene is ridiculous. First off, Buntaro would have killed Blackthorn immediately regardless of what Toranaga might say. Second, Toranaga would have never even considered insulting Buntaro or Mariko so badly by having a woman of her class living with a man, let alone a foreigner. That simply was not done. Plus love had nothing to do with marriage at that class level most of the time. They were arranged marriages and her duty was to please her husband, not look down on him despite him saving her life. And they had other Japanese that could speak Portuguese. Why disgrace your best warrior by using her. She only has high status because she is Buntaro's wife. She has no other position or title, other than daughter of a traitor that should be executed. And a Christian convert on top of it, that a few years later would have been a death sentence. Fiction is one thing, but ridiculous fantasy is another.

Hostage taking was a common accepted practice back then. There would be no need to hide it. That part doesn't make sense. Being a devout Catholic, Mariko would not have attempted seppuku. Having someone kill you under your direction is still suicide. God isn't stupid. Lol Of course adultery is a sin too, so this is really a slanderous portrayal of the character. Btw, women didn't do seppuku, they slit their neck artery.

38:44 you are partially correct about the ritual. The official Shogun podcast explained that for female ritual suicides, there may not be a second, or if there is, that the second is really there for moral support, and does not strike and behead the person, as they do for male ritual suicides. The reason is that females will position a knife low aiming up at their heart, and then she will fall forward onto the blade, impaling herself (hopefully in the heart), allowing her to die quickly. I think that the podcast stated that if they do not fall in a way that impales their heart, the woman will use a small knife (I assume a second blade they have ready for that purpose?) to cut her own throat and bleed out if the blow to the heart is not successful. For men, they will not seek to impale themselves in the heart, but are supposed to cut across their abdomens, which is extraordinarily painful, but not immediately fatal--people can linger for days before dying. So males have seconds that will prevent such long suffering by decapitating them after the victim make the required disemboweling cuts.

This was an amazing episode. I saw Lady Mariko finally breaking down at the end of the battle of the gate when her spear attacks were all being parried and trapped by a multitude of enemy spears, but with the spearmen clearly not striking to kill her. She realizes finally that she can't obtain death in battle (which she was hoping to obtain), but must instead go through the mental and spiritual agony of having to kill herself, and I think that is what makes her finally break down.

Richard Chamberlain also did a great job on the first version of the Bourne Identity. The first movie as good as the book.

To your point at 18:50 I have loved seeing the story from a Empire perspective. Even if it was from someone that was ultimately outside of the bigger picture, it was great to see and I look forward to seeing what Tales of the Empire brings us! Great work, dropped a like for you. :)

Oh my god this just appeared on my recommendations, and I heard an Irish accent! As an Irish girl adoring this show it's amazing that TH-cam finally shows me things I want!

Buntaro actually loves Mariko but he is too emotionally immature to deal with her lack of love for him.

I haven't read the book, so I don't know what will happen next. But my guess is that Toranaga and his half-brother Saeki have a secret plot to double-cross Ishido. Toranaga is pretending to "surrender" to his half-brother and allow himself to be "escorted" back to Osaka Castle--this way, Toranaga is able to avoid the very dangerous task of trying to fight his way to Osaka with a smaller army against a larger floe. Once at Osaka Castle, Saeki will reveal the double-cross and side with Toranaga with his full army at the gates of Osaka. That's my current theory. So it is actually providence that causes Toranaga's son's foot to slip and save Saeki from being killed by the son who doesn't know the plan, and was trying to murder Saeki. What do the others think of my idea?

Saying "Bushido...” instead of "point" or w/e (or just not publicly calling out the taking points at all) seems cringe to me but I enjoy the discussion otherwise.

Hi guys! I listen to your podcasts quite a bit on my podcast app and really enjoy it. One “note” though, when it comes to the pronunciation of characters’ names, especially the MAIN character, ya gotta get it right, no excuses. Even in the opening, when Kingpin is speaking, you hear him saying her name as it should be pronounced.
