Was this ever reported? Wonder if other boards like the Board of Psych make similar errors! 😠

Yes, we reported this to the BBS, who in turn forwarded the concern to the state's Office of Professional Examination Services (OPES)... and OPES responded saying basically "we're cool with it as it is." Very frustrating.

🎉 Thanks! Great video. Love the digital products too. Question: How does MFT supervision work during the 90 day rule? Do I follow the trainee rules or associate rules? (i.e. if I see MORE than 10 clients in a week then I need 2 units of supervision that week)

I think the problem with both the original MFT Vignette and new Clinical exam are the same. I think my journey explains this problem perfectly (which seems to be a common one with peers I went to school with, who like me failed the original Vignette multiple times and now are failing the new Clinical exam as well). I graduated with a very high GPA and never had test anxiety. During the last two semesters I had a paid internship (one of the lucky few close to my house I might add), where at one point I had 14 clients, going to grad school full time (12 units), while still holding down my part time job in retail 30 hours a week and also being a single father. I finished my 3000 hours in 2010. I passed the original written exam no problem. Then I missed passing the original Vignette multiple times by one point (causing missed promotions and/or new job opportunities in Community Mental Health). Then I took the new Clinical exam and, well, did much worse let's just say! Let me go back though and explain how my internships created what I think is the problem for many, no most of the MFTIs who can't pass this test I dare say. Over the years, working and getting my hours, life happened-co-parenting, working, launching children, family members developing health problems ect. as internship possibilities presented, that would allow me to get my hours with supervision, while also getting a paycheck to pay the rent and buy food. I did my original internship at a small agency in an Outpatient format where I was a therapist doing mainly Individual, with some Family and a little bit of Group therapy. I was free to practice any type of Individual, Group or Systems theory I wanted to. I suspect had I taken the Vignette at this point, I would have passed, since all of the "theory" I learned in school was fresh in my brain. My next job (and where the problem begins for many MFT interns trying to eventually pass the Vignette or now the new Clinical exam) was at a very large agency as a "Clinician". This agency had two major divisions which were Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient, both divisions with multiple programs. Additionally, this large agency had group homes and a school for children with Emotional and/or Learning dissabilities. I was assigned to a program in the Intensive Outpatient division, using an Evidence Based Practice that was very different than any theory I learned about in school-these Evidence Based theories were NOT part of my education and not on the original BBS exams either-Evidenced based have been on the canidates handbook finally in the last couple years, but I have yet to see any test questions on them. These Evidenced based practices make you think different. Many agencies are utilizing Evidence Based Practices now in order to have the "evidence" (stats) they need for continued funding to stay open, provide services for the majority of consumers, while also giving the majority of us interns hours and a paycheck to survive I might add. I must say I would LOVE to have done some Bowen, Satir, Narrative or Gestalt at the big agency that I had learned about in school and did at my first internship, but I couldn't at the big agency- I got paid to do Evidence based models where they don't allow "random acts of intervention" like we learned about in school. Some Evidence based consultants I dealt with went as far as to infer if one was doing the evidence based model properly (usually crisis management/putting out fires), using the ecological approach, one would not ever need to do traditional theories and techniques! I was not in my cozy Outpatient office any more meeting higher functioning clients once a week doing therapy I liked and wanted to do that I learned about in school. I would go out into the community (their ecology) to them at Schools, in Juvenile Hall, at court, at Psychiatric hospitals, Medical hospitals and of course, would often have have family sessions in their homes. At this large agency (and all the other large agencies according to former peers in school I spoke with over the years) half the people I worked with were ASWs and the other half were MFTIs, yet we both had the same job as a "Clinician" or "Case Manager" perhaps, doing much more Social work than doing Therapy as one learns in school and hence THE PROBLEM or barrier to pass a state exam on doing "therapy" begins. Primarily these jobs are doing Case and Crisis management. Few of the people I went to school with were doing therapy in an Outpatient manner as was learned in school or on these BBS exams and the reason is simple, THERE ARE VERY FEW PAYING OR EVEN NON PAYING INTERNSHIPS FOR MFTs for that matter available, doing THERAPY as one learns in school! This is my main point here-this is the problem as far as I can decipher! How is one supposed to pass a test based on what one is not actually doing in reality over several years???? These tests are designed for someone who has done their 3000 hours in a traditional Outpatient agency, doing traditional theories over many years, but reality is, most MFT interns have to get jobs doing Social Work providing Case management and Crisis management, doing not only Outpatient, but Intensive Outpatient services, being on call and also Inpatient services, following Evidence based practices (again not learned about in school or on the BBS's tests as far as the tests I've seen and former colleagues have taken I have spoken with) most of the time, where we slowly accrue our hours doing Individual, Family and Group interventions through an Evidence Based model. Perhaps we should just all take the LCSW Clinical exam instead and call it a day or the MFT test could be more like the LCSW test perhaps? Bottom line BBS, either change the test to reflect the reality of the vast majority of internships for the majority of MFTIs (the actual job market), what the majority of MFT interns are actually DOING in "reality" over the years or give us a study guide on what your small group of test designers think is the "best answer" in YOUR subjective, hypothetical, theoretical, BBS fantasy land please! I can't afford to keep paying for these tests, study programs (you don't endorse) and more importantly, lost promotions and job opportunities! Give us a break! I really don't appreciate being referred to as a "career registrant" either-as if we want to be stuck in this hell you have created for us with your poor measurement of competence you have concocted-seems to be blaming the victim as far as I'm concerned!
