I recall a memory with Graham from this. We went through meps together. I thought shaved (biced) heads were the norm, so I razered my head before going in. He had some assumptions of me from that. Lol. Turns out that is not allowed.

Watching this now. 1:15:33 if it’s the time I’m thinking about. Fordham said “Oh man… I’m done, done like a burnt pizza!” Barbosa started repeating it in a funny voice and we laughed so hard 😂 in that moment.

So, if you aren't a Veteran, a lot of this wouldn't make sense. This is a direct transcript from my journal of that day, right after it happened. It's all being translated to a broader audience: 07 December 2011-Today was a huge mission plan. We had 3 separate parts. One trip ticket for Chillowak, one for Toronto, then another for the frame work ops. We had a plan for APOBS which I was the NCOIC of. I was going to clear the road to a burned down ANP vehicle that had been captured by the Taliban the day earlier and it’s crew beaten. We never got that far however. We grossly underestimated Chillowak. Dismounts were kicked out to the east, right side, of the road as we cleared to the turnaround. They came under fire at the end, SSG Grimes was able to directly hit one of the Taliban in the chest with a grenade round. I was a gunner and got to shoot at 3 locations, one where SSG Grimes identified with the HE grenade, then one with smoke. The last I observed through binoculars and put about 300 rounds into the building he was in. I have to believe I have an unconfirmed kill. I was feeling great about the action when dismounts went to the other side of the road. I had my back to them at this point, watching the 3 o’clock security. What happened next is a mix between what I saw and what was filled in later. SSG Grimes and SSG McCollum went to the roof of a collapsed building. While up there, an IED went off. They believe that SSG McCollum might have knelt on a pressure plate. SPC Barbosa was my driver and immediately said, “NO NO NO NO NO, Sergeant Grimes was up there!” I told him to move the vehicle up and called for a medic to get there immediately. 1-6 and 1-7 came up, 1-7 apparently couldn’t hear the dismounts, so there was confusion from him even though it had been aired several times what had occurred. I pulled front side security while 1-7 slowly got up there with the medic, screaming for me to brief him even though the dismounts were immediately coming over the radio in reply telling him what the fuck happened. I told him, “Can’t you hear the dismounts? SSG Grimes was on top of the building when an IED went off!” Dismount informed over the radio that they couldn’t find McCollum. He had fallen through the roof and was in the bottom floor. When he was found, he was called up as a double amputee. It wasn’t clear with Grimes, he complained of pain to his right side. I could see him moving and worried about him less and more about McCollum bleeding to death in the basement. The medic seemed to be taking a long time. Finally, I heard SFC Fuller (1-7) screaming for another dismount. Thought I was a gunner, I didn’t see anyone else moving so I told Barbosa when I got out to back up so he wasn’t front side security without an active gun. I ran up to the roof and saw them carrying McCollum down SSG Grimes was on top and we were trying to keep him out of shock. 1SG told me to get the doc up there as soon as McCollum was stabilized and to get the “fucking bird” there immediately. I ran down and told the medic, she pointed towards the aid bag so I just grabbed it and ran back up to Grimes. I helped check for more bleeding and bandaged his head further. I was trying to keep him from panicking and going into shock. We eventually got him on the litter and carried him down. When the helicopters arrived, I helped carry McCollum to the bird, getting a good view of what a double amputee looks like. I forgot to mention in the middle of all this we found an IED that the husky had raked up. We were waiting on EOD who took long as fuck to get there. A lot of shit happened at once, I guess. Right now I really don’t want to put forth the effort to put every detail in place. There was a lot of blood and a lot of it on me. When we got back, we had to quarantine their items and ours with blood and do an inventory. I had to change immediately so people didn’t see all the blood. I scrubbed most of it off the gear later. There wasn’t a tear shed that I saw, though every single one of us wanted to cry. Was just told that via ICOM chatter they believed I killed 3-4 insurgents today.
