New Years Eve (NYE) - New York City - 2000 (Y2K)
On December 31, 1999, I boarded the train from Springfield, MA to Penn Station, NYC to ring in Y2K in NYC. I brought with me my trusty 8mm camcorder and oversized bladder that allowed me to film the evening without break. I tried to get as close as possible to the center of Times Square, but it got filled very early in the afternoon. After, I slept on the floor of Penn Station and took the 6am train back to Springfield. This is not meant to be a perfect (or even halfway decent) view of the ball drop. It's just for posterity, and I included some recordings of the city and the streets from this time period. Enjoy this little time capsule from the year 2000!

27:41 Boy! The NYC Sanitation Department sure had a lot work cut out for them if they were to get Times Square and the Theater District cleaned up and sanitized before the sun rose later that morning.
I was living on 28 Bedford Street in East Orange, NJ at that time.

I was in NYC for New Year’s Eve 1999. Sadly, the closest I got to Times Square was around 58th Street/Central Park South, up to Central Park. It was well over a million revelers there for a historical moment. Nowadays, I simply just watch it on TV every year. I don’t like crowds.
Compared with today the late 90's seem like a dream world... like a beautiful dream world which is lost forever and only lives on in our memories and hearts. 2020-24 seems like a nightmare compared to this beautiful footage and not just because of the pandemic, the inflation or the war in Ukraine, in general!!!! In a way the entire Western world, not just the USA, never recovered from 9/11 and is in decline since then.

Fun facts: Ice Spice was born on that day at the same place. It’s been almost 24 years ago, meaning it’s been through 2 cycles according to the Chinese calendar. Everybody in this video was born in the 20th century, most of them being born in the 70s- Early 80s. The World Trade Center attacks happened a year and a half later. Even then I remember everyone was afraid of a terrorist attack. I kept my journey here a secret from my family so they wouldn't try and stop me. When I returned home, I told them I had been in Times Square. My mother was really pissed... that I didn't let her join me! 😂
