The Most Controversial Way to Wrap Bar Tape...「Half Wrapping」 |No Tape, NJS Style Reverse Wrap

No more sticky hands, no more finishing tape coming loose. Save half the weight of bar tape off the bicycle. This method doesn't follow the standard procedure to wrap bar tape. I think the half tape on the NJS drop bars looks bulky and misses the mark. If you are worried about sticky tape, use the self-adhesive silicon tape. It does not have any glue it just bonds to itself. You can also make it nice and tight.
@@roguecode2354 Nice idea! Indeed, bar tape choice and thickness contribute a lot to the aesthetic. Hope to try it out when there’s a chance.
Fastest is puppy paws
@@timtaylor9590 Good one, can feature this in future video sometime!
Great vid! I've been wrapping bars for a couple decades from the bottom up. I was known for having a very clean tape install as well, but the electric tape at the "ends" getting old and gummy was always an issue. It wasn't till about a year ago that I saw it was even possible to wrap from the top down when Russ from PathLess Pedaled demonstrated on the Grepp reusable/washable bar tape. I switched over to that and have been doing it since, albeit a full wrap from the traditional start/finish of tape. I do ride on the tops a lot and the bare metal bar might get a little slippery when my hands get sweaty. If I had some textured flattened-top handlebars like those fancy carbon ones, your half-wrap method would make total sense!
@@mitmon_8538 Thanks for sharing your experience! Totally can relate to the electric tape issue. Similarly, like you I also did a full reverse wrap (from the top down) . After realising I seldom use the “Tops” + trial and error, 「Half Wrapping」is born.
This is just plain stupid. Not only do the exposed cables (and the corresponding slot on the bar) look like garbage, they will interfere with your hands when riding on the handlebar top. And for what?
for looks, similar reason with people using track drops with non-existent tops
you save 2.06 grams of tape....
@@salvadorhardin2644 I can relate with you on the exposed cables. Ideally, it can look neater with internal cable routing through the handlebars - e.g. carbon drop bars with flat, aero tops. However, a compromise is made for external cables’ ease of maintenance. For riding on “Tops”, it’s recommended to use 2 rolls of bar tape to perform a full reverse wrap (from the top down). 「Half Wrapping」 is suitable if you seldom use the “Tops” position, similar to track racing which favours the drops. (Depending on bar tape weight) It can save half the weight since only 1 roll is used. E.g. 40 grams + finishing tape’s weight in the video. Although some enthusiasts don’t use bar tape at all, for those whom prefer some grip there’s 「Half Wrapping」. Thanks for commenting!
maybe works better with internal handlebars

Wow i might try this if i get drop bar but short riser bars are in my ❤
You can apply the principles of this method on any handlebars - no finishing tape!
Nicely done Sir 🥰 😊
I like all the upper positions... the best part is of course the possibility to switch between all these positions! That's why I was quite seduced today after seeing an aero bullhorns handlebar, for the first time... But I didn't immediately realise that it was a fixie... it's only after a while that I thought "wait where were the levers?" so I came back later, the bike was still there, and of course it WAS a fixie...
I love the vibe, man! Jazz in the background, the crunchiness of gravels, and the balmy sunshine. Nothing beats this! Keep it up, brother.
@@nguyenminhdung1612 Thanks for your words! I’ll do my best, Stay Tuned for more!
For me personally, i think hood is best since you can still be aero and comfortable at the same time you can even sprint on it!
@@Chair956 Many people around me prefer the hoods too! Very befitting the standard hand position
joystick is more aerodynamic and real sprints are only possible on real drops
@ Agreed, I tend to move to the “Hooks” for more stability and control during sprints.

Where did you manage to find this frame tho? Haven't heard of this model
I got this directly from one of their vendors in China. It's a special batch so it's harder to find one now...
Where did you bought the toeclip pedal?
@@tennet5691 I got these online, Wellgo M085 3IN1 is the model name
@zhe_shean is it strong enough to skid?
@@tennet5691 I wouldn't recommend them if going brakeless - quite flexy toe cage + body. Not enough stopping power for emergencies. Paired with brakes, short skids are fine using them. Safety first!

nice build 🙂a quick tip when setting headset bearings - after setting the pre-load, when tightening the locking ring, use a second spanner to prevent the lower ring from turning, otherwise you'll be over-tightening the headset bearing leading to notchy steering and premature wear.
Thanks for the tip! Just like you said, I found myself loosening and retighthening the headset multiple times to get the desired pre-load. Definitely trying it next time.
Which wheels are these?
These are 25mm deep unbranded rims laced to XJ hubs (sealed bearings), 32H Front + Rear

I have invest a lot of time probably 100 hrs on fixie brands including tsunami including what the material is made of. I did buy rims from them and dealt with their customer service. Tsunami is not a good recommendation in my opinion they don’t care. They gave me a flawed rim joint and rust on the rims and I have it recorded. Somethings you put together I think I might be wrong should of been greased to prevent corrosion. I guess if you wanna save money on a bike it’s bad but not good either. Look what matters is that you enjoy riding your bike. AS A PRECAUTION you should your local bike mechanic inspect the proper calibration of the bike. Usually an average joe like you and me don’t have an understanding of that to be safe.
Totally agree about bike safety! I did got a safety check and tuning by the local bike mechanic, so no worries. All threaded parts are greased, although not shown in the video. Sorry to hear about your bad experience with buying TSUNAMI rims. I only purchased the frameset from them, it has been working flawlessly, and hopefully for more years to come.
That was cool
Thanks!
SHEEESH looks clean bro i didnt know tsunami had a SNM 27-1
This was a special batch made for 27 inch wheels (630mm), thus the name SNM27-1. Very lucky to get one of these. Thanks for first comment!
