Just over 2 months ago, this African Violet had the crown cut off and put into a pot of soil to grow new roots. Here’s how it looks today. If you missed the first video showing how it was done, here’s the link - th-cam.com/video/dzMywQNL2Nc/w-d-xo.html PLUS I’ll show you a few other varieties that are favorites of mine. What are your favorites?

African Violets benefit from repotting every few months but let’s face it, we don’t always do it. Here’s a quick fix for one that has grown a long neck and is hanging over the side of the pot. The African Violet in this video is Optimara’s Rhapsodie Clementine. WANT TO SEE THE RESULTS? Here’s the follow up video - th-cam.com/video/BzTlleWkbSw/w-d-xo.html

      @@Tree-thingz if each of the crowns is healthy you can remove them and root them individually and have three separate plants. If you are nervous about doing all 3, choose one and try it first to see how easy it can be.

    • @plumberrygardenpatch4869
      @plumberrygardenpatch4869 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes in most cases you could keep the bottom section and it will grow new sprouts around the cut edge that can be separated into individual plants later. If the roots are healthy that should work. Just make sure not to over water the root ball. Keep it moist but don’t let it get soggy.

    Can I ask why you couldn’t just repot it and soul it up to its “neck “ instead of cutting its head off lol? I’m terrified to chop my plant like that !

    • @plumberrygardenpatch4869
      @plumberrygardenpatch4869 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one was too overgrown for that but you can certainly do that if the neck is just starting to get long. For example, if the neck is 2” long, you can remove the lower 2” of soil at the bottom of the root ball and replant adding fresh soil to the top. The neck that is buried will grow new roots. The violet in the video was too long for that.

    Ok, so I just decapitated my African violet. I’m wondering what to do with the rooted stem? I’m mortified that my top cutting and leaf propagations won’t make it, so I wanted to do something with the bottom of the plant too. Just as a precaution!

    • @plumberrygardenpatch4869
      @plumberrygardenpatch4869 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can keep the root system and lower stem potted and it will usually sprout new growth. Between your crown cutting, leaf cuttings, and the base stem, you are going to have lots of plants!

    • @plumberrygardenpatch4869
      @plumberrygardenpatch4869 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that since there are no leaves on the old stem now it will need very little water. Keep the soil slightly moist but too much water could cause it to rot.

    That is a lot of leaveswhT ever happened to all of the leaves that were plucked? Did you propagate them?

    • @plumberrygardenpatch4869
      @plumberrygardenpatch4869 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those leaves were composted. In this case, all the leaves that were removed were very old. Younger leaves usually root faster than old leaves so if I had wanted to propagate I would have removed one closer to the top of the stem. I only keep a handful of African violets and didn’t need another one of this variety. But if I had been concerned that this plant might not make it, I would certainly have rooted some leaves from it.

    • @plumberrygardenpatch4869
      @plumberrygardenpatch4869 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually keep them in the bag around 3 weeks, sometimes less. If they start to wilt when they are removed they may need to go back in for a bit longer. It’s important when you bag them to have the soil moist but not too wet because too much moisture without air flow can quickly lead to rot.

    Thank you for the follow up! The quick results are just amazing. I was happy to see Dean’s Bunny Blue in your collection. I recently received this variety as a freebie from Violet Barn in my last order. My plant arrived with a lot of beautiful variegation but I have no idea what the foliage will do under my growing conditions. My shelves with less light have foliage with minimal variegation. I like it that you show the results, so so many who don't post an update. So does grow light make a difference to make AV bloom faster? What is your advice for those who do not have grow light?

    • @plumberrygardenpatch4869
      @plumberrygardenpatch4869 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grow lights work very well since African Violets need light to set flower buds. But if you have a bright area in your home that will work just as well. Keep in mind that the sunlight changes throughout the year so a window that is just right in one season may not be in another season. You will need to turn them frequently if they are near a window because they will grow toward the light. Direct sun can burn the leaves so if it is very sunny move them farther away or use a thin curtain to protect them. They will also bloom under a bright overhead light if you don’t have a space near a window. If you do use a light, keep in mind that it shouldn’t be on 24 hours a day. They need a period of darkness overnight to set buds.

    the last one you showed is my favorite. I never have luck with trying to propagate that one I am going to try the method that you used by just putting them in water to see if it will work. It was my husband's grand mother's so would like to keep it going. I have already gave tons away that I started in my basement it seems to be their most favorite spot. I even put a large flat round container on top of the fish tank and ran syphoning yarn down into the tank. I had one great big mass because everyone of the leaves grew babies. Those were the white ones they seem to be the easiest to grow.
