Expanding Cultural Competence
Knowledge and information establish a critical foundation for any growth but there are limits to how far they can get you. Eventually you must make the leap to applying these lessons in a practical way. This mini-lecture lays out strategies for expanding your cultural competence using the framework of intercultural competence outlined in the research and models by Dr. Darla Deardorff (2006) - attitudes, knowledge and comprehension, skills, desired internal outcome, and desired external outcome.

Healthcare & Intercultural Communication
Let’s set aside the most obvious reason for improving our intercultural competence as it relates to healthcare. (You know…that pesky little matter of providing the best possible care for everyone in our society.) Even in the coldest hearted analysis, just think of the impact on the bottom line for one of the biggest economic industries in a highly multicultural country. This mini-lecture will e...
Education & Intercultural Communication
Culture and education go hand-in-hand in many respects. Culture informs the curriculum and objectives for educational systems. Education shares, reinforces, and perpetuates the elements of culture. This mini-lecture will explore the intersection of culture and education including differences in educational systems, the impact of culture and education on each other, and the practical application...
Nonverbal Communication and Culture
We can sometimes be fooled into thinking that using and understanding nonverbal behavior is just something with which we are born. In truth, we learn the vast majority of nonverbal cues as part of cultural dissemination. This also means that any time we engage with someone from a different culture we could be using two different sets of nonverbal behaviors. This mini-lecture illustrates the div...
The Nature of Nonverbal Communication
Have you ever tried to follow a movie or television show while the sound is muted? Odds are good that you can follow along pretty well because the nonverbal behaviors communicate with such power. This mini-lecture lays out the foundational principles of nonverbal communication necessary to begin the process of mastering this critical function.
Language and Culture
Language and culture are inextricably intertwined. Language is crucial to both learning and sharing a culture. Culture also impacts and influences the rules and evolution of language. Like Lucy and Ricky, Calvin and Hobbs, and Merriam and Webster, it’s hard to imagine one without the other! This mini-lecture explores the dynamic interaction between language and culture and the impact of languag...

Self & Identity + Intercultural Communication
There is an undeniable symbiosis between culture and our identity (or more accurately identities); each informs, influences, and shares in the creatin of the other. As such, an understanding of self and identity is critical to the development of effective intercultural skills. This mini-lecture defines some core terms and concepts of the self, examines the intersecting principles of identity an...

Defining Culture
The word “culture” gets thrown around a lot, often with too little understanding of what it actually MEANS. This mini-lecture breaks the definition of culture down into bite-sized chunks and debunks a couple of common misconceptions surrounding the concept.
The Process of Communication
The communication process is simple - but not necessarily easy. The good news is that no matter what form or how many people, the process of communication always involves the same seven elements. The bad news is that each of those seven elements presents a nearly inifinite number potential variables. This mini-lecture breaks down the transactional model of communication, identifying the element...
Communication Defined
Just because we do something a lot doesn’t mean we do it well or really understand how it works. I know plenty of people with thousands of hours behind the wheel of a car who are terrible drivers and don’t know a spark plug from a lug nut. The same holds true for communication - experience is not the same as understanding. This mini-lecture breaks down a simple definition of “communication” in ...
Intercultural Competence
The goal of improving intercultural skills can present a bit of a moving target, since the work is never realloy complete. Just when you think you’ve got it mastered, another culture will emerge or a current culture will change. It’s a lifeflong pursuit demanding constant evoloution. As such, effective intercultural skills aren’t measured in terms of “complete” but rather as a degree of compete...

Most if not all models don't deal with what happens with non-performance, failing businesses. Another huge one is Everything is leadership/management focused, and imbalance on the contribution and onus on non-management employees to deliver. Clan culture in African context i often hear non managment employees describe their leader and need as we want a father figure"

The the CVF concept will assist the organisation a great deal in dealing with different cultural issues within the organisation. This framework assists organisations in addressing hierarchical issues and the creation of agility and adaptability. This foresters the culture of high performance and leads organisations into having generative culture.
