Many thanks to Joe for taking the time to demonstrate this and for sharing his thoughts. Please subscribe to the channel. Charlie was the best. Nothing like waiting 7 weeks for your cassette to show up haha! Brilliant.
❤
Thank you super cool stuff!!!
I remember the little window in the door to his Beverley studio, with a small curtain, which he would yank every lesson to try and surprise me and we got a chuckle out of it. I think he was just trying to get me to relax, he was very perceptive of my emotional state and guru that he was knew exactly what I needed to chill me out so I could do a better job.
Thank you❤.
So cool !
Much love ❤
Hey this Ramsey - we had an ensemble together - at BS of M - checking out you voice leading lesson - I use the same concept to demonstrate that I can make make bop (jazz improv) out of one’s or thirteenths - oddly I’m no good at sharing what I learned from Charlie- I’m only able to teach sort of master classes - I think it might be cause I was self taught till I got to Berklee- Ray was a marvel - Charlie was a miracle - I went bananas with his lessons - ripped though the lesson part so we could play - him playing left hand bass then we would trade 2s or 4s on the tune of the week - he had me doing a transcription a week until he gave me an art Tatum thing - it took me 5 week and he kept complaining that I was taking so long - I finally realized just a couple of years ago that he might been just trying to keep me from being a slacker- he had some other tricks up his sleeve than were crazy brilliant - he’d get you to do the do the lesson/task and you get the gift without knowing what or why the gift was so valuable- one the first things he said was “your in the army now” - good grief what a wonderful person - I so loved him
Love this!
Thank you. I took lessons from Charlie for three years, and so I really appreciate your stories.
Gary thanks for making this video about our favourite jazz teacher! One time I told Charlie that I felt I was stuck on four notes, on the famous ear training exercise by him and Charlie said to me “don’t worry man….! Remember the first time you came here and I played one note for ear training and you said: “trumpet”? “ That was Charlie! An amazing teacher and person, always with a great sense of humour. I still have his writing in my exercise book and his little drawings. ❤
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing, Garry!
Have just been playing 'Mr Sellack' - she's still wonderful! 😀

I TOLD YOU 3 AT STEPHEN TALKHOUSE & HELD BACK ON OPENING THE DOOR TO THE STAGE TO SAY THAT YOU CAUSED STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THAT PLACE (& IT TRULY WAS ORGASMIC-RUSHES ALL PEOPLE FROM SIDE TO SIDE! SILENTLY EMPATHETICALLY CONVEYING'CAN YOU FEEL THIS TOO‽ MY GOSH?
Hi Terre! Just wanted to say it's so cool that someone like you has a similar approach and a way of learning as myself :) You're an inspiration <3 Charlie sounds like a good teacher.
Chariie was not just a great teacher, he was a musical genius. Not just in jazz, but in classical and whatever music. He was truly a musician and composer that had no boundaries. I personally now someone who took from him that said Charlie would write amazing classical quartets then throw them into the fireplace. He said they would keep him busy for a while. He was not just a great teacher. He was one of the greatest musicians of all time. I know that personally.
great vid
That was awesome, Garry. What a nice tribute and technical instructions.
Geniuses

Thank you, Terre! 🌹🌹🌹
Where i could hear Charlie's music?
Geniuses
All the jazz greats are skilled in the use of the inner voices, esp. Bill Evans which you show.
Really interesting. Thank you. I would love to know what the music is from at the beginning please, if you would be so kind!
Put the cassettes up for us. Pics of his letters too!
"I'd like you to think of me as someone you put your teeth in for"
My former music teacher studied with Charlie. His name is Martin Porto. (Martin is such a fantastic musician and teacher.) If you want to interview Martin, I can give you his email address, or you can send him a note by checking out one of his videos on YT. Here he is playing Giant Steps: th-cam.com/video/Uq6d7qQLgQo/w-d-xo.html
sounds like he was also a great mental coach
Weirdlo bird blues.. Great Gary... Charlie was the best..
Thanks so much Gary. You put Charlie back on my radar. As a young student a Berklee, I was in Charlie's queue for private lessons. The day I left Boston, he called me with an open spot. That was a tough call. I followed up with correspondence lessons and was well rewarded. So much valuable information. I believe that knowledge shared increases it's value and with the conversation moving to the web, the value of your videos is unmeasurable. Keep that torch burning Gary!
Thank You for sharing Gary
Wonderful video Garry you come across so well! Brilliant work.
WOW Garry, this is fantastic! Thank you soooo much!
AMEN
I watched the Garry Dial video at 4:30am today Joe... You may recall I couldn't find the time so I got up early & got them clocks ticking again...;-)) Garry mentioned Charlie had a great sense of humour...I like that! I recognized so much of your teachings as well + this 2nd look at superimposition really helped bring it home...Cheers as always..;-))
Joe Hubbard shared this link in one of his video lessons & wow, it makes so much sense too me. I've isolated tones & used subtractive rhythms in my own way but never was able to put it into words that are useful. I've always loved that logical/mathematical aspect to music! The harmony parts you played really opened my ears as well, making me think ahead, ie, what's possible. Yes, I've made notes as there's a lifetime of study in each fragment! Charlies sense of humour works for me as well & I'm so glad to have listened to your stories Garry...;-)) Best wishes & thanks from England. (PS, I'm a beginner or as Joe puts it, I'm a 1x40 player - played for 1 year 40 times...;-))
Since my name is Charlie too, you’re welcome, Terre!
Good work for staying with it. Thanks for sharing!
How am I not subscribed to this channel until now?
Absolutely wonderful in every respect; pedagogically, musically, and pianistically. Thank you so much.
A fascinating insight from a non jazz perspective. Just shows the depth of Charlie's genius! I really wish I'd met him!
Nice video, Terre! Thanks for making it.
I have many drawing also but it was never about Bergonzie-LOL
The stuff of genius.

Wonderful stories and highly informative - thank you!
Fantastic video, learnt a lot just watching this! Thank you for continuing an incredible legacy!
