Nice video on one of my favorite saxophones. I believe Sonny Rollins payed a Buescher Big B horn for some time. Mine is a mid-60’s 400. I love that horn.

It’s great to hear a review of these later 12M horns by someone who sounds like they can really play. In the U.S. the late 12M is a bit too common to earn deep respect, and as a result the playing examples can be really atrocious. Do you know if either of these horns was the type made in Mexico?

The original ads for the Conn 11M use the slogan, “The Low A with guts.” And it does. My pal Doug “Mr. Low” James plays one, as well as a low Bb Super-20.

Hallo! Wieder ein für mich sehr interessantes Video, besten Dank! Seit einem guten Jahr spiele ich ein Buescher Super 400 Tenor, von dem ich nach wie vor sehr begeistert bin. Nun schaue ich natürlich auch nach einem Baritonsax und es sollte (natürlich) ein amerikanisches sein. Kann man denn eigentlich einen Buescher Bariton mit einem Conn Bariton vergleichen? Und stimmt es, dass das 12m besondere Intonationsprobleme hat? Schon mal besten Dank für die Infos und viele Grüße aus Cottbus

Hi, l want to thank you for your style of playing sax with out electronics and very natural. It's not common nowadays but for me it's pure sax that matters. I admire you subtones, as a great plus to every musician but as forgotten on my mind. I will listen to all you videos with in 9 years on good amplifier and of course try to take some of your style. Please continue, no guitar boxes, only pure sax!

It's about time the Conn 16M got it's 'props'. My 1963 16M that I've had since new is still my horn of choice. I also have a Naked Lady from 1937 and a 10M underslung octave model from 1962. All fine horns. I even bought a 1964 16M as a 'road horn'. Great video David !

Unboxed my first saxophone yesterday (a 1959 Conn 16M tenor serial number 833144). This video, and others on vintage saxophones, made me want to get a Buescher or Conn. The 16M was the student sax of my youth, and quite affordable for a beginner on a pension like myself. The sax came with an unmarked mouthpiece that is nearly identical to the Clark W. Fobes Debut that I bought to practice on three months ago. Fobes stated that he was modeling his beginner mouthpiece on the old Otto Link 5. I was wondering if you might know what mouthpiece was originally sold with these old Conn 16Ms? I think the Otto Links were made in Elkhart, Indiana, so I would not be surprised to find that they were suppliers for Conn.

Danke für den tollen Vergleich mit so vielen Mics! Am besten fand ich das Brauner, dicht gefolgt vom TLM103. Überrascht hat mich aber mal wieder das SM57, von der 3k-Spitze mal abgesehen. Richtig gut fand ich auch das Oktava. Die Bezeichnung habt ihr aber verwurschtelt oder? War sicher das MK012. Das TLM49 fand ich hier erschreckend ungeeignet. Auf Stimmen mag ich es eigentlich sehr.

Nice! I use a (refaced) hard rubber Otto Link with a medium tip opening as well on my Martin Committee III tenor. Great combination for jazz ensemble playing.

Enjoyed your exercise! Ausgezeichnet! I happen to own both an 11M and a 12M, both dating from 1970. I do find the 12M more clear, but love that Low A grunt!

I wonder how much of the tonal difference is the bell making a longer tube internally, compared to it causing reflections, and resonance? Definitely heard what you were talking about, before you described it, but from the point of view of the microphone obviously. Was actually surprised to hear so much of a difference in the higher end. Never thought low A baris sounded "thin", just more "focused" which is kind of nice actually. I have a Bb Super 20, but would like to upgrade to a modern low A--but also don't want to sell off the King to get it lol.

Guten Tag, David. In your discussion of Buescher tenors, you omitted the mid-1920s saxophones. Maybe you could say something about them and play a couple of tunes to demonstrate their sound---especially with the TrueTone, 1925.

This is the only comparison I have seen of the actual same manufacturer, similar vintage and just between low A and low Bb. So thank you for that. I would prefer more low-end-focused samples, though - particularly as the horn is very likely to be used as a low harmony or bass reinforcer in an R&B, swing, or salsa band.

I have a King Super 20 Tenor Circa 1943, according to the number, since 1970, a used instrument when I got it, and it is still in great shape, and blows well. Now and again, the low F, E and below do not sound correctly when playing pp , or mf. If I blow loudly all is good.
