Metal Detecting An Old Pittsburgh Coal Mine - Scouting Mission!
Hi, everyone.
In today's video, I spent some time scouting a new abandoned coal mine location!
*Disclaimer - Actively seeking out abandoned mines can be dangerous. I do not enter or explore inside any sketchy mine portals. I just like to detect around the outside of the portals or near old workshop locations.

boom let's go let's go treasure and adventure ✌👵
Glad you didn’t get caught. Sunset is part of the NC coastal reserve and the national estuarine research reserve. I live less than a mile from there and have seen people kicked off numerous times with detectors. Cool ya found some stuff though.
Hm, I didn't know that. The beach patrol passed me many times on their quads and such and never said anything. Must've got lucky that week or something. This was right before Memorial Day weekend if I remember correctly, so maybe the beach rules are different depending on the time of year? I have witnessed them protect sea turtle eggs and etc. on the beach. So I made sure to stay away from any designated areas.
@@teed412 yeah it’s a turtle sanctuary. Every year they have egg hatching gatherings. You probably weren’t bothered because it was before tourist season or you weren’t right by the pier. The patrol loves jamming up the tourist though. Ie: no tents. No umbrellas or chairs before 7am or after 7pm. I know you can get a permit from the town hall or something for lost valuables to use a metal detector. I just rarely see them. Hope ya find something good out there.
If you find your feet getting cold, layering does wonders. Any thin sock under those fuzzy ones should work well. Also, 10/10 cat footage. Would watch again for cat.
Honestly my feet have been okay so far. I tuck my pants into my boots, so very little air gets through. My feet do get a little chilly when I get a lot of snow on my boots, but otherwise not too bad.
Holy shit man. Detecting in this weather, im definitely addicted to the craft. But I could never. This ohio weather is horrendous, I applaud you👏, because I could never😂
Definitely deserve a sub!
Haha I am a bit of a lunatic when it comes to detecting. I like going out in the winter with less bugs and ticks. Just me and the snow lol. Honestly, it's not too bad if you get a cheap thermal layer. I wear a balaclava as well. Only thing that bothers me are my gloves. Maybe I'll go over what I use for detecting in the winter in a video or something!
@teed412 that would be great!
@@teed412 If you like detecting in the cold and snow, you should come up to the Erie area! Plenty of old industrial or industrial-ish sites lying around, but with the added challenge of 3-5 feet of snow around this time of year 😅❄
@@stevenp6155 Erie is definitely on my radar! The lake effect on Erie is crazy, though. I'll definitely have to give it some time before I try up there haha.
12:40 -- maybe an electrical transformer of some sort? If it is, there should be some sort of ferrous signature along with the copper you picked up. 27:55 -- pickaxe head?
Ohh, good idea on the 27:55! Those might be pickaxes, yeah. I'll have to dunk them in the electrolysis tank to see if they come out any clearer.
It looked like a pick axe to me as well
Great finds... waiting fro new video.. Cheers from south European colegues and supporters!!
I use to ride my 1200 to Ocean City cruising at 80 down and back.
The 883 has plenty of power for the Highway. The 1200 has power to spare. The 1200 Speedo goes to 120mph but you can bury the needle at 120 and its still pulling like a freight train.
So....?
Those white circles are from old mason jar lids so the food didn’t come into contact with the metal itself. Nice.
Hey, SnapScavenge! I've been following some of your bottle hunts. I bet those locations would produce a few interesting items with a metal detector!
@ haha I thought about taking one down there maybe I will one day soon.
Nice
Always something interesting, Teed.
Wait till a 🦌 leaps out at you at those speeds.
So cool! I love the idea of poking around someplace like an old coal mine where there would have been a lot of activity and a good chance of finding something interesting. Those miner tags you’ve found are very cool. Fun stuff, Teed!
Hey, MisterWannabee! Thanks! Yeah, it can be interesting for sure. I found an Indian Head Penny from 1891 right after filming this too! Go figure my GoPro gave up while making this video lol. I have a new one now, so I plan on getting out there and recording something soon! My only reservation about the place is that the subsidence could get worse, or open up a significant sinkhole. Otherwise, the coal mine site is pretty neat!
That's a sweet bucket. You should restore it to its former glory.
I think I cracked the edge of it with my shovel, but it's sitting in my garage now. Pretty stiff from years of sitting there under the dirt, so I am not sure it'll ever retake its original shape. I'm slowly putting pieces together for an electrolysis setup, so hopefully soon I will have some decent pics of a few hand drills and etc. that I have pulled from here.
nice bucket!!!!
Im not sure if it was a sportser but this guy had a bit of a rat build of a bike. He said he had the jets changed, and upgraded intakes and whatever else. 140 he said. I asked him didnt the wind bother you, he said, only a bit but if the wind ain't trynna knock me off, i dont feel like im riding.
I can ride mine down the freeway at 60 mph in FOURTH gear and the engine sounds relaxed.
The hiking trails are always a great spot to detect. It is amazing what you can find just off to the sides of the trail or even right smack dab in the middle of the path. OMG the cowboy hat was an awesome find, that was definitely my favourite find! Awesome video!
Hey, Sweetdiggz! Thanks for stopping by! I've been pleasantly surprised by the path strategy! Cowboy hat is definitely awesome lol.
Subscribed from Finland.🇫🇮 Happy hunting from a fellow detectorist! 🍀☺️
Thanks for subbing! Happy hunting to you as well!
I think you stole a mole man's hat.
Haha I'm just glad I found it before the mole came back for it. In all seriousness, it seems like it is some kind of pin or brooch. The pin part seems to have broken off, but the hooking mechanism is still there on the bottom.
Beautiful location! Nice button, is it military? Lipstick was a really cool find, could be vintage for sure. The pottery shards are always cool to find. Great video!
Hey, Sweetdiggz! Thanks for checking out my channel! I've spent a good amount of time researching it, but couldn't find anything concrete about its origins. My best guess is old military button, yeah. Yeah! I haven't opened the lipstick since I brought it home. It has leaked a goofy substance since sitting in my display case. It's sitting on a paper towel now lol. Yeah, plenty of pottery around our rivers here. Thanks! I really appreciate you checking my videos out. Been watching yours for a bit! I'll try to edit my next one soon!
I've got an '04 Sporty 1200 and have no issues whatsoever out on the highway with it. I also have an 883 in the garage (not mine) that I take out just to keep it healthy and I have no issues with that one either. Yes, the 883 works a bit harder and I tend to keep it at 55 or 60 but here in Chicagoland, everything is always under construction, so you never really get up there for very long. The 883 has a Sundowner seat so it's actually pretty comfortable. My 1200 is all stock. I would not choose it for a long haul which is why I keep a Road King in the stable. My basis of comparison is from 'way back in the day, I rode a wee Kawi 440 from OKC to Boston a couple of times. That's a workout on a puddle jumper. The Sporty in either iteration has everything needed for highway runs except comfort.
see i was looking for something like this but im wondering if my apartment complex would allow it lol
Doesn't hurt to ask them! My complex was surprisingly okay with it, since we were given 2 spots.
So many riders lug their sportsters all over the place, then call them 'slow.' My '14 1200, stage 1 I guess it is, likes to wind out and pulls hard at 60 in 3rd, 80 in 4th.. I've hit over 90 in 4th the engine running smooth making plenty of power and not leaking or burning a drop of oil. Don't mistake a Sporty for a big twin. Two different animals.
NEW SUB HERE
COOL VID
Thanks, @outdoorswithaaron4145! I appreciate the sub, too!
@@teed412 no problem love seeing people detecting cool spots
Did you take a closer look at that spikey thing around 3:30? Don't think I saw that in the car at the end there.
Hey, Explosivelybrilliant! I tossed that thing the second I got back to the parking lot lol. Way too heavy to keep lugging around. I honestly should've kept it for scrap, looking back. It's going to take me a long time before I can take my stuff to a scrap yard and get money for it though!
Can't tell for sure, but the lead pieces at 13:00 don't, at first glance, look like fired bullets to me. If you feel like throwing some close-up stills of them into a community post or something, we could perhaps get a better idea of what they are :)
Hey, Explosivelybrilliant! I had a coworker tell me they were very tiny lead sinkers! That is my working guestimate at this point haha. You make a good point, though. I will try to use the community page more often, especially for hunts I don't record.
Bike sounds nice ... Dean Speed Rampage right? With baffles in or out?
Hi, Louv. Yeah, Dean Speed Rampage. I am fairly certain I took the baffles out during the recording of the video. So baffles should be out. I do have a few videos before this where the baffles were still in. I decided to take them out because with the baffles it's just too muted for me. Without baffles, it isn't too terribly loud but it has the growl I was looking for haha.
3:30 That's a jawbone from a cyber dinosaur. Great find.
Certainly not enough evidence to prove otherwise, so at this point it is definitely a cyber dinosaur jawbone lol
Hey there, Teed. Glad to have another moto vid from you. I do check out your detecting videos from time to time. Would love to hear more about your helmet, is it a modular? I'm in the market for a modular and will shop Shoei among others.
Hey, MisterWannabee! Thanks for watching. I'm glad you're still enjoying the channel even though I switched up the content a bit. I know I lost a few people when I started uploading the metal detecting stuff. Glad you stuck around! The Shoei I got is an RF-1400. I thought about the modular Shoei but I ultimately went with the RF-1400 because I'm more comfortable with standard full-face helmets. Helps with the GoPro setup and stuff too, don't have to worry about extended wires and such since the helmet doesn't lift up and etc. So far I like my Shoei better than my old Bell Qualifier helmet, but that's not saying much when the Bell was a $120 helmet and the Shoei is closer to $600... lol. Big price difference, and you can definitely tell! If you do decide to go Shoei, I'm sure you'll find something that fits your needs. Thanks again for watching, and sticking around!
I leave it in sport mode all the time. I think you do get used to the sensitivity after a while, and then it feels nice to have the control to have instant response when you want it. I also feel like it helps a bit with my creaky carpal tunnel wrist, not having to twist so much 😅
Its behind the ignition key on a bobber or rogue 👍
New viewer to the channel also new to detecting in Pitt. I bought a used Minelab 440 also a slightly used Garrett Ace 300.
Any suggestions where I should metal detector?
Hey, Santo! Thanks for watching! It seems like a lot of people are picking up metal detecting lately! Welcome to the hobby! I started out on the Minelab Vanquish 540. The 440 should be an awesome machine for you. I can't speak to any of the Garrett machines, but I loved my Vanquish. I still have it as a backup! Any Pittsburgh city parks are free game as far as detecting goes. Just be careful and be aware of your surroundings. Some parks are a little sketchy. The smaller townships and stuff that are not within city limits all have their own separate rules unfortunately. Most are cool with it, but some aren't. The only township I couldn't get permission from so far was Ross Township. I also tried getting some permissions from local schools, but so far no luck. Maybe you can try asking some of your local schools if you can detect there! Definitely some old schools around here. Either way, welcome to the hobby and thanks again for watching!
Hey, Santo. I would try some Pittsburgh city parks first. Something like Frick Park or maybe even somewhere near you. If you look up your local township/municipality's ordinances, most of the time they will label if metal detecting is not allowed. If you can't find anything that says metal detecting is forbidden, then you're more than likely okay to detect there. If you're really worried about getting permission, feel free to call your local township's parks department and ask if it's okay to detect in their parks. I've only had one township let me down like I said in my other comment. So far everyone else has been nice. Hope this helps!
They need some heavy duty stakes to pin them down in the event of strong wind cos they become sails and then the bars get bent
I agree. Definitely need something to tie it down if you expect heavy winds in your area.
@@teed412Definitely. I did 😂😂😂
Also this is unrelated to anything in the video, but I'm curious as to what camera(s) and editing solution(s) you're using, if you feel like sharing at some point :)
Hey, Explosive! I can absolutely share that! I use a GoPro Hero 8 as my primary camera when metal detecting and on my motorcycle. I also have an Insta360 X3 I use for my motorcycle videos on occasion. I manually edit all my footage and I record in a way that is convenient for me to edit easily. Very minimal edits are made in my videos. I mostly cut the super boring parts out, or the awkward pauses haha. I use the software "shotcut" to edit my videos together. It's a simple, free software I found on a TH-cam tutorial somewhere. Thanks for the question, and thanks for sticking around and continuing to watch my videos. I super appreciate it!
oh yeah baby, it's DIME time with a 54 on the Manticore 😏
My 2020 Indian Chief had one installed from the factory. I got the trickle charger also. Plug it in after every ride.
Thank you for this, was struggling to find the port to plug the tender into 😅
What's your thoughts on detecting on the beach? I have been on the beach about ni more then 20 times and did not care for it. I enjoy the parks, tot lots, and fields/open spaces 🎉 I think if i talk to the camera people will think i am unstable and not talk or mess with me lol
Hey, Mrmetaldetectorist! Thanks for checking out a few of my videos! I honestly think it's a mixed bag. I like the beach for the increased chances of finding silver/gold, but I also like the old homesteads and abandoned areas for the historical artifacts. I love the idea of finding some old colonial coins or even just some old relics from Pennsylvania's history. I have a few coal miner tags from the 1800s that I am pretty stoked about, but I'd love to find more precious metals this year. I completely agree. I am so nervous to talk to the camera when others are around because I'm afraid they'll think I'm nuts haha.
Nice hunt. I am watching a few of your videos.
Talking to the camera while recording in public is definitely an acquired skill lol I feel ya on that one
It makes me so self-conscious, haha. I don't think I'll ever get used to it!
heeey Teeeeeed! Congratulations!!! Big support from metaldetecting cuple from southern Europe!
Thanks!! I still consider myself a novice, but I'm getting out there and exploring! Hoping I find some silver this year.
Hi, everyone! Thanks very much for watching my video! For some reason, this video in particular is gaining a lot of traction, quickly! I super appreciate everyone that has watched, liked, and subscribed! I'll hopefully see you all in my next videos!
Pittsburgh NY?
Hi, @christopherrose3399. This is in Pittsburgh, PA.
I haven't metal detected in years, but yeah, more often than not, parks have had a bunch of dog shit lying around
Hey, Explosive! Good to hear from you again! Yeah... it's gross. Wish something could be done about it, but there will always be bad pet owners unfortunately.
